Former Wildcat Dwight Perry could lead Wofford to the NCAA Touranment tonight

It’s Championship Week. Kentucky’s SEC Tournament run doesn’t start until Thursday, but tonight, a former Wildcat could lead his team to the Big Dance.

Dwight Perry’s Wofford Terriers take on Furman in the finals of the Southern Conference Tournament tonight in Asheville (7 p.m. ET, ESPN). Perry, who played for Kentucky from 2006-09, is in his third season as Wofford’s head coach. Last night, the No. 6 seed Terriers beat No. 7 seed VMI 85-65 to advance to the championship. Furman, the No. 5 seed, knocked off No. 1 seed Chattanooga in the game prior.

If the Terriers win tonight, they’ll advance to the NCAA Tournament for the sixth time in program history. You probably remember their last appearance. Led by Fletcher Magee, Wofford made it to the Big Dance in 2019, beating Seton Hall in the first round to face Kentucky in the second. The Cats took care of business in Jacksonville, holding Magee to 0-12 from three-point range en route to a 62-56 win.

Six years later, the Terriers are one win away from punching their NCAA Tournament ticket again. Perry knows a thing or two about the Big Dance. In 2007, he started Kentucky’s first NCAA Tournament game vs. Villanova in the United Center in Chicago instead of his cousin Bobby Perry because the coaching staff incorrectly filled out the starting lineup card. Instead of taking the technical foul for submitting the wrong lineup, the staff let Dwight Perry start alongside Randolph Morris, Joe Crawford, Ramel Bradley, and Derek Jasper and instructed him to foul a Villanova player immediately so they could sub him out. He did, allowing his cousin Bobby to check into the game. Kentucky went on to beat the other Wildcats 67-58.

“One of my former teammates, (ex-UK star and former NBA player) Jodie Meeks, always jokes about it, that I started more NCAA Tournament games our freshman year than he did,” Perry told Mark Story in 2023. “That really would have been bad (had UK lost).”

Perry finished his Kentucky career with five points over 19 games in three seasons, making the SEC Academic Honor Roll in two seasons. He got his coaching start as an intern at Stanford and joined Shaka Smart’s staff at VCU, where he earned his master’s degree in sports leadership. From there, Wofford hired him as an assistant coach in 2019. Two years later, he was promoted to associate head coach and in December 2022, was thrust into the role of interim head coach when Jay McAuley stepped down. After Perry led the Terriers to a win over Texas A&M in College Station and the SoCon Tournament quarterfinals, Wofford removed the interim tag.

Now, Perry has the Terriers just one win from the NCAA Tournament. We’ll be cheering for them tonight vs. Furman.

March. That’s it. That’s all you need to say. However, I will be kind enough to go into further detail on the fantastic first weeknight of Championship Week where former Kentucky Wildcat Dwight Perry brought a SoCon title back to Spartanburg as the Wofford Terriers won an absolute thriller in Asheville.

Facing the Furman Paladins, this did not look like a 5 vs. 6 matchup. The two teams combined to make 27 threes in a game that featured some massive momentum swings.

Wofford built up an 8-point lead with seven minutes to play. Furman hit a few threes, then things got tight. Wofford had six turnovers in a 3-minute span to let the lead slip away, and it looked like the Paladins were going to cruise to the NCAA Tournament.

As that terrible stretch for Wofford reached a crescendo, the ESPN broadcast shared Dwight Perry’s final message to his team. “The team who has the most mental toughness down the stretch is going to win.” That’s exactly what happened.

Following a 9-0 run that put the Terriers behind by four points with 2:30 to play, most teams would pack it up and call it a night. Instead, Wofford played perfect basketball. They got an easy layup in transition, then created a wide open three to take the lead. Furman got two looks to tie the game, but they fell short as Wofford ended the game on an 11-0 run, pulling away for a 92-85 victory.

The Terriers are in the NCAA Tournament for the first time since Mike Young’s team fell to Kentucky back in 2019. Dwight Perry is back in the Big Dance for the first time since 2007, when Kentucky assistant coach David Hobbs wrote the walk-on’s name in the starting lineup for the first round matchup with Marquette, rather than his cousin, Bobby.

Former Murray State Racer Jackson Sivills was the star of the game for Wofford, scoring a team-high 20 points behind four made three-pointers, but he’s not the Terrier everyone will be talking in the NCAA Tournament.

Kyler Filewich is a 6-9 center for Wofford who looks like many mid-major centers you’ve seen over the years. He’s a crafty big who scraps his way to buckets around the rim. When he gets sent to the foul line, the balding big man wearing a headband turns back the clock and shoots free throws granny style. He was only 3-7 from the free throw line, but he made a couple of big ones down the stretch that helped Wofford secure an NCAA Tournament bid.

Troy has a decorated history on the gridiron, but that hasn’t always been the case for the basketball program. The Trojans took down Arkansas State in the Sun Belt Championship Game 94-81 to advance to the NCAA Tournament for just the third time. It’s their first appearance since 2017.

The Trojans trailed by three with six minutes to play when they went on a 17-2 run to take control of the Sun Belt Title. Tayton Conerway had 21 points and Myles Rigbsy added 20 to take Troy back to the Big Dance.

It is over, my friends. The regular season of College Basketball has come to an and and now we have nothing but conference tournaments, and, of course, the NCAA Tournament. This is the time of the year where you’ll see everyone have opinions about college basketball and everyone will fill out a bracket. All I will suggest is that you be extremely cautious about who you listen to about these games. There are a lot of people who don’t pay attention to it then start writing about it because they are assigned it because of the time of year. I’ve been writing about College Basketball all season and put together a good year. Let’s get started on a conference tournament championship game between Wofford and Furman.

Wofford isn’t a team that you’re probably very familiar with. They also are not a team that you’re probably going to spend a lot of time flipping through channels to see play. Wofford comes into this one with an 18-15 record for the season, and they are just 10-8 in conference play. This is the SoCon Championship game, so how did Wofford get here? Most recently, they’ve beaten East Tennessee State and VMI in back-to-back games before this. During the season, they split the series against VMI, and they did the same with East Tennessee State. Wouldn’t you know it, they did the same with their games against Furman. What I think is interesting about Wofford is that they were 3-6 on their home court. That left them 7-2 on the road. With these games all on neutral courts, this actually bodes well for Wofford. They are the rare team that actually seems to play better when they are away from their home court.

Furman is not a very well-known school with, but they have put together a better record this season than tonight’s opponent. For the year, Furman is 25-8 and they went 11-7 in conference play. In order to get to the championship, they had to first face Samford, and they made light work of them. The next game was much more of a challenge as they beat Chattanooga. While it was a win, they won in overtime by three points. The biggest issue was free throws as they missed too many which gave Chattanooga a chance to capture the win in the game. Prior to this tournament, they won their last four games of the regular season, with two of them being within five points. They haven’t been consistently better on the road or at home. They lost four games on the road and three at home to conference opponents.

With both of these teams, there doesn’t seem to be any rhyme or reason to why or when they lose. Sometimes teams are better in certain situations, but neither really seem to make a ton of sense. In this game the best thing to do is to look at the past two matchups between them. Wofford dominated them in the first matchup, beating them by 19 points. All of that came in the first half of that game. Furman hit just 23.5% from deep in that game, and they hit just 33.3% from the floor overall. In the second game, the numbers were swapped. Furman hit 40% from beyond the arc and Wofford hit just 26.7% from the arc. In that one, they still just lost by three points. In this third iteration, I think Wofford wins the game. I think they are probably the better team. They play well on the road, and in both games there were a lot of signs that showed them being the better team. Back Wofford.
