The 2026 Winter Olympics will extend through northern Italy from Milan to the borders with Austria and Switzerland.
But direct routes don’t exist in a mountainous region. Just getting from Bormio to Milan will take almost four hours by train and bus.

As Varnier sat in a Milan hotel coffee shop not far from San Siro Stadium, where the main Opening Ceremonies will take place, he called his staff “pioneers” in the concept of a spread-out Olympics. The sprawling Games were not his idea. He joined Milan-Cortina in December 2022 after planning fell disastrously behind during the coronavirus pandemic, but he has experience in the Olympic world, having run the Opening Ceremonies for the Turin Games in 2006 and advising the International Olympic Committee at other times. He understands that the Winter Games had to host in traditional ways. He can see the advantages of a sprawling Olympics.
