The game was played amid political strife between Trudeau and President Donald Trump as the U.S. world leader has teased Canadian lawmakers about the country becoming its “51st state.” Trump has openly called Trudeau the “governor” of Canada as well. It continued on Thursday ahead of the game.

“You can’t take our country — and you can’t take our game,” he posted on X.

Politics infiltrated hockey earlier this month as NHL and NBA fans booed “The Star-Spangled Banner” when Trump announced tariffs against Canada, which have since been paused.

The booing continued into the 4 Nations Face-Off and it culminated in a round of fisticuffs during the U.S. and Canada’s first matchup. Three fights occurred in a mere nine seconds after Canadian fans booed the national anthem in Montreal.

The U.S. was able to pull out a win in that game.

Canadian fans drowned out the smattering of boos in the TD Garden as they sang “O, Canada.” American fans followed up with their own singing of the national anthem.

Canada beat Team USA 3-2 in an overtime 4 Nations Face-Off Championship Game thriller in Boston, Massachusetts, on Thursday night, which saw political tensions spill into the arena.

The big picture: Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau took a swipe at President Trump’s call for Canada’s annexation as the 51st U.S. state moments after the win, saying on X: “You can’t take our country — and you can’t take our game.”

Zoom in: Ahead of the game, U.S. hockey fans booed Canada’s national anthem — after Canadian fans booed a rendition of the “Star-Spangled Banner” before Team USA’s winning game Montreal last week.

Political tensions between the U.S. and Canada are colliding with a high-stakes hockey game Thursday night between the sport’s major superpowers.

Why it matters: The drama-filled matchup, featuring the best players from Team USA and Canada, has become the most anticipated international hockey game in over a decade.

Team USA will play its Canadian rivals for the 4 Nations Face-Off championship title Thursday in Boston.

The intrigue: Team USA has a chance to make up for its loss to Canada 15 years ago at the Vancouver Olympics, The Athletic reports.

“I don’t think there are a lot of Americans who wake up in the morning saying, ‘Oh, damn Canada. Oh, we should really go after Canada,'” Prime Minister Justin Trudeau remarked Saturday, encapsulating the shell shock many north of the border are now feeling.

Why it matters: The U.S. is indeed going after Canada. The 25% tariffs President Trump announced on Canada and Mexico — which will likely plunge our northern neighbor into recession — have united Canadians of all political stripes in indignation.

Connor McDavid etched his name in Canadian hockey history with a golden goal on Thursday in Boston, winning a game and a tournament that felt bigger than anything ever played in an All-Star break.

With the goal, Team Canada beat Team USA 3-2 in the first best-on-best championship game between the two countries since the 2010 Olympic gold medal game, which Canada won in overtime thanks to Sidney Crosby.

The first two periods were both even, with each team notching a goal in each frame. Nathan MacKinnon got Canada on the board with his fourth goal of the tournament, most of any player, but Brady Tkachuk answered back.

Tkachuk, who missed practice Wednesday with an illness, contributed a lot more than a goal, though. He was arguably the Americans’ most physical player, delivering multiple big-time hits and setting the tone for the game.

Team USA took the lead in the second period on a Jake Sanderson goal, and then Sam Bennett tied it right back.

There was no scoring in the third period, as strong goaltending and high-effort defending took over. Both countries waited for that one last punch, but the high stakes naturally had to last until there was a tournament-winning golden goal on the line.

Even the overtime rules reflected how much each team wanted the win, as as there was no three-on-three hockey or a shootout. Just normal, sudden-death hockey, until one team wins.

This rematch came just five days after the U.S. beat Canada 3-1 in round-robin play in a game that was punctuated by three fights in the first nine seconds of play. En route to the championship game, Canada beat both Sweden and Finland, while the U.S. beat Finland but lost to Sweden on Monday, after their spot in the final was already clinched. The tournament replaced the NHL All-Star Game this year ahead of next year’s Winter Olympics in Milan, which NHL players will participate in for the first time since 2014.

Catch up on all the action below.

To no surprise, Connor McDavid is named 4 Nations Player of the Game.

The tournament MVP is Nathan MacKinnon.

Here is Jack Baer’s recap for Yahoo Sports:
