CHARLOTTESVILLE, Va. (WRIC) — A person is in critical condition after they were stabbed near the University of Virginia’s (UVA) Alumni Hall in Charlottesville on Thursday. The incident prompted a campus-wide lockdown as police searched for an “attacker with [a] knife.”
Just before 4:50 p.m. on Thursday, Feb. 27, the UVA Police Division posted to X, formerly known as Twitter, about an “active attacker with [a] knife” moving in the area of Emmet Street S.
This resulted in the university being put under a shelter-in-place order for about an hour. That order was lifted at 5:44 p.m. — about an hour after the initial emergency alert was posted — with police saying the suspect had been detained.
Police have since provided more details on the incident, which began at 4:38 p.m. with officers receiving report of a stabbing near 100 Emmet St. S, across from the Alumni Hall.
One person was stabbed. They were taken to a local hospital in critical condition.
Neither the suspect — identified only as a middle-aged man — nor the victim have any known affiliation with UVA, according to police.
The Charlottesville Police Department will lead the investigation into this incident, as it took place in its jurisdiction.
No further information is available as of the time of reporting.
This was the second time this week that UVA had to shelter in place due to a suspect on the run. The incident on Tuesday, Feb. 25 involved a suspect that Virginia State Police (VSP) said evaded a traffic stop and hit multiple cars, including a VSP vehicle.

CHARLOTTESVILLE, Va. (WAVY) — A shelter-in-place has been lifted after police said they have detained a suspect in connection to a stabbing at the University of Virginia Thursday, Charlottesville and UVA police said.
UVA Police had issued an emergency alert for an active attacker with a knife on campus Thursday afternoon after Charlottesville Police reported someone had been stabbed.
Around 4:35 p.m., Charlottesville Police and UVA police officers were sent to the area of 100 Emmet St. for a report of a stabbing, and they were actively looking for a suspect. Charlottesville Police said the man fled on foot from the area, and there was a high police presence.
The victim’s status is unknown at this time, police said, but the incident “is stable.”
An initial alert read as follows: “ACTIVE ATTACKER with knife W/M, red hoodie and blue sweatpants reported in area of 100 Emmet St. S, across from Alumni Hall. RUN. HIDE. FIGHT.”
It was updated to add a description of the person to say he is middle aged and wearing a white shirt, rather than a red hoodie, with blue pants and white shoes, and advised people who may have seen the person to call 911.
It’s the second time this week the university had been under a shelter-in-place order, with another emergency alert issued two days earlier as police were looking for a suspect on campus.
In that situation, Virginia State Police said troopers tried to pull over a Chevrolet Impala on Fontaine Avenue, and the suspect allegedly refused to stop, prompting a pursuit.
During the pursuit, the suspect allegedly got out of the car while it was still in drive, and the Impala hit a VSP vehicle and at least one other car, and police said the suspect had been in the University Heights Apartment Complex.
