Officer killed in UPMC Hospital shooting; multiple injured

YORK COUNTY, Pa. (WHTM)– A West York Borough Police officer has died after an individual opened fire at UPMC Memorial Hospital in York County on Saturday, according to West York Borough.
Officials are expected to provide an update soon. The press conference will be live-streamed in the player above and on the abc27 Live page.
ABC News is reporting a nurse and members of law enforcement were shot during the active shooter incident during which the West York Police Department responded. WellSpan York says they received five patients for care as a result of the shooting shortly after 11 a.m.
The gunman is reportedly deceased from a self-inflicted gunshot and their identity is not known at this time.
abc27 is withholding publication of the officer’s name until proper notification can be given to the family.
In a statement, UPMC says no patients were injured, and the hospital is now secure.
“If you are an employee of UPMC Memorial and are not scheduled to work today, please stay home,’ the hospital said in a statement Saturday afternoon. “A hotline has been established at 717-849-5338 or 717-849-5334 for families of patients seeking more information. Families of patients arriving on site should report to the parking lot of the OSS building across the street from the hospital.”
The Pennsylvania State Police Troop J Major Case Team is conducting an investigation.
Governor Josh Shapiro says he has been briefed on the shooting and is responding to the scene. He says the Pennsylvania State Police and the Pennsylvania Emergency Management Agency are on the ground and responding with local and federal partners.
Attorney General Dave Sunday, who previously served as the York County District Attorney, has also responded to the scene.
UPMC Memorial, which opened in August 2019, is a 104-bed hospital with all private patient rooms. The five-story facility provides medical care, cardiology and vascular services, chronic disease management, surgical services, and treatment for patients in need of long-term acute care, per UPMC.
UPMC, headquartered in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania, has more than 40 hospitals and 800 doctors across Pennsylvania, New York, and Maryland, according to UPMC.
Residents should avoid the area around UPMC Memorial. A press conference is expected later today.

No patients were injured, the hospital said.

One officer was killed and multiple people were injured in a shooting at a hospital in York County, Pennsylvania, on Saturday, according to law enforcement sources briefed on the matter.
West York Borough Police Officer Andrew Duarte was killed in the shooting at UPMC Memorial, according to Pennsylvania officials.
Another officer and a nurse reportedly sustained gunshot wounds. It is unclear how many people were injured in the shooting.
The incident began about 10:30 a.m., the law enforcement sources said. Officers from the West York Police Department responded and the subject opened fire.
The suspect then apparently tried to barricade himself inside the hospital and, it is believed he died from a self-inflicted gunshot wound, according to preliminary info.
Investigators at this point are treating the shooting as a domestic violence incident, but cautioned the investigation is in its early stages.
UPMC said no patients have been injured.
“We have received confirmed reports of a gunman at UPMC Memorial, and shots fired,” a statement said. “The gunman has been apprehended, and no patients have been injured. The hospital is now secure. This is a fluid situation. Law enforcement is on premises and is managing the situation.”
Law enforcement agencies continue responding to the area.

A police officer was killed while responding to a shooting at a York, Pennsylvania, hospital on Saturday morning, his department confirmed on Facebook.
The gunman was also killed, UPMC Memorial said in a statement on Facebook.
“No patients have been injured. The hospital is now secure,” Susan Manko, spokesperson for UPMC Memorial in York, told CNN.
The threat has “been neutralized and an investigation is underway,” Ted Czech, a public information officer at York County’s Office of Emergency Management, told CNN.
Law enforcement officers are at the scene, Manko said, adding families of patients arriving to the hospital are being guided to the parking lot of the building across the street.
Pennsylvania Gov. Josh Shapiro has been “briefed on the tragic shooting” and is on his way to the scene, he said in a statement on X.
“The hospital is now secure and members of the (Pennsylvania State Police) and (Pennsylvania Emergency Management Agency) are on the ground responding alongside our local and federal partners,” Shapiro wrote.
“Follow the direction of local authorities and stay clear of the area.”
Pennsylvania state Sen. Dawn Keefer and state Rep. Seth Grove said in a joint statement they are praying for “those who were injured and for the loved ones’ coping with an unthinkable act.”
“Our hearts go out to the victims, their families and all those affected by this senseless act of violence,” Keefer and Grove said, thanking first responders “for their swift actions in securing the scene, treating the wounded and ensuring the safety of our community.”
UPMC Memorial, a 104-bed hospital, opened in August 2019 and provides emergency medical care, cardiology and vascular services, chronic disease management, and surgical services. York is located in southern Pennsylvania.
