Dylan Andrews helps UCLA survive late scare in narrow win over Indiana
BLOOMINGTON, Ind. — Dylan Andrews exhaled, took two dribbles, spun the ball and swished the free throw.
After so much had gone wrong for UCLA, including two missed free throws on the front end of one-and-one situations and a seven-point lead the Bruins nearly squandered in the final 78 seconds, his team could finally breathe.
Andrews’ two free throws with 4.2 seconds left gave UCLA a 72-68 victory over Indiana that was a lot scarier than it needed to be for the Bruins.

He is serving his second stint as the UCLA beat writer, which seems fitting since he has covered almost every sports beat except hockey and horse racing. Bolch is also the author of the recently released book “100 Things UCLA Fans Should Know & Do Before They Die.” He previously covered UCLA basketball from 2010-11 before going on to cover the NBA and the Clippers for five years. He happily traded in gobs of hotel points and airline miles to return to cover UCLA basketball and football in the summer of 2016. Bolch was once selected by NBA TV’s “The Starters” as the “Worst of the Week” after questioning their celebrity journalism-style questions at an NBA All-Star game and considers it one of his finer moments.

Indiana basketball player ratings vs UCLA: Guard play steady in another close loss
BLOOMINGTON — Indiana basketball battled from behind for the breadth of the second half Friday, before falling 72-68 to visiting UCLA.
Here’s how the Hoosiers graded out:
◼ Trey Galloway: 7/10
Struggled to find his shooting range early but contributed in other ways, namely six rebounds and six assists. Absorbed a lot of ball-handling duties and managed UCLA’s pressure well. He committed just three turnovers on a night when IU (15-11, 6-9 Big Ten) only gave away eight, a sturdy number against the takeaway-minded Bruins.

◼ Anthony Leal: 6/10
Held one of the best plus-minus numbers among Hoosiers on Friday night, which told a certain story. Has become a reliable, versatile defender for Mike Woodson as he approaches the end of his college career.
◼ Luke Goode: 7/10
One of Indiana’s best players, not just Friday night but this season. The 3-point shooting has been a godsend, Goode helps on the glass and his midrange game has been a quiet revelation. The Illinois transfer has made a meaningful impact again and again, more than justifying his place in the starting lineup.
◼ Mackenzie Mgbako: 6/10
Started strong then lost most of the first half to an apparent ankle/leg injury. Stayed aggressive after returning to start the second half but struggled to find clean looks against tough UCLA defense. Still scored in double figures, on a night when Indiana needed offense where it could find some. Narrowly missed a layup to tie and then a 3 to lead on the pivotal possession at the end of the second half.
◼ Oumar Ballo: 5/10
UCLA (19-7, 10-5) was able to isolate him offensively in ways Michigan State could not, and in Aday Mara, Ballo found one of the few centers in the league able to make Ballo play small. One of his quieter outings but made good hustle plays. Felt like the Bruins’ familiarity with his game from his Pac-12 days might have played a role.

◼ Myles Rice: 5/10
One of the great failings of this season, personnel-wise, has been the way IU’s staff has let Rice fade out of its offense and rotation. Few Hoosiers showed so much promise in the early part of the winter, and that was not by accident. He came to Bloomington with high-major bonafides. Rice will likely bear some of the weight of responsibility there too, but a player needs help finding his way inside a team, and Rice just hasn’t been able to this season. Finished with five points and one assist Friday.
◼ Kanaan Carlyle: n/a
Returned for the first time since the Maryland loss Jan. 26. Hit a 3 in the first half.
◼ Bryson Tucker: n/a
Another quiet evening. As Woodson has searched for rotations to lean on here in the season’s final weeks, Tucker seems to have faded from his thinking somewhat.
◼ Malik Reneau: 7/10
A second straight game off the bench. Better in the second half, although UCLA attacked him with athletic mismatches at times defensively. In general, the undersized Bruins were very good defending IU’s big lineups Friday.
