Portland Trail Blazers at Washington Wizards: Game preview, prediction, time, TV channel

The Portland Trail Blazers continue their run of games against teams with nothing to play for Wednesday night at the Washington Wizards.
This stretch began with wins Saturday over Charlotte (14-43) and Monday at Utah (14-43).
The Blazers play at Brooklyn (21-36) on Friday. The Nets, 11th in the Eastern Conference, have won seven out of 10 to trail 10th-place Chicago by 1½ games. So, maybe the Nets feel like they have something to play for.
But back to the Blazers. They trail Sacramento (29-28) by 4½ for 10th place in the Western Conference. The Kings play at the Jazz (14-43) on Wednesday.
It’s difficult to predict what the Blazers will do at Washington. On Saturday, they won 141-88 at home over Charlotte (14-43), but on Monday barely held on to win 114-112 at Utah, last in the West.
The Wizards (10-47) have the worst record in the NBA. They defeated Brooklyn on Monday to snap a six-game losing streak.
Washington is pretty much bad at everything. They rank last in offensive rating (105.5) and 29th in defensive rating (118.1).
The Wizards’ chances for victory each night appear to hinge on the shooting of Jordan Poole. In 10 wins, Poole shot 44.5% from three-piont range. In 40 losses, he has shot 34.8%. He went 5 of 8 from long distance while scoring 26 points during Monday’s win over the Nets.
Prediction: The Blazers have no excuse not to win.

Portland started off its seven-game road trip with a win in Utah and will look for a third straight win. While they’re 5.5-point favorites in the NBA odds, our Trail Blazers vs Wizards prediction thinks two of the league’s lowest-scoring teams will stay on trend.
My NBA picks are hammering the game total Under ahead of this 7 p.m. tip at Capital One Arena on Wednesday, February 26.

My analysis
The Washington Wizards put an end to an ugly six-game losing streak with a 107-99 win over the Brooklyn Nets on Monday.
The NBA’s worst defensive team — allowing a whopping 121.1 points per game — Washington limited the opposition to its lowest number in nearly 11 months since it kept the Detroit Pistons to 96 points on March 29, 2024.
That was a big help to an offense that struggles to put up points, scoring just 108.1 points per game on the year, the fourth-lowest output in the NBA.
The Portland Trail Blazers are right there in the bottom half, ranking 24th at 109.7 PPG, but they have turned things around, particularly through defense. That was on display in Monday’s tight 114-112 win over the Utah Jazz, which followed a 141-88 dismantling of the Charlotte Hornets.
Since January 19, Portland has gone an impressive 12-5, tied for the fifth-best record in the league. During that span, they boast the NBA’s fourth-best scoring defense, holding teams to 107.4 points per game.
They are also showcasing the best perimeter defense in that span, limiting teams to a paltry 30.8% clip from 3-point range.
That’s how, in what’s supposed to be a teardown year, Portland has moved to within 4.5 games of the Sacramento Kings for the 10th and final Play-In berth in the West.
Normally, this should be a pick for Portland to dispatch the league’s worst team, but Washington has unleashed some serviceable veterans hoping to catch on as late-season pickups or to catch on with a contender next season.
Guys like Marcus Smart and Khris Middleton ended up in DC as Washington played the role of trade landing station, but they were both useful contributors in the last win.
Because of that, we’ll focus on these teams’ low-scoring output. Portland has gone Under the total in two of its last three, while Washington has cashed the Under in four of its last six.

Deni Avdija Over 17.5 points
Scooter Henderson Over 1.5 threes
The Wizards gave up on Deni Avdija, dealing him to Portland for a package that included Malcolm Brogdon and draft picks last offseason.
Avdija is on a good stretch right now heading into facing his former team for the first time, topping his 17.5-point total twice in the last three games, and being right around that number in double figures in five straight.
Let’s finish with the improved shooting of Blazers’ guard Scoot Henderson, who is hitting at a 37.5% clip from 3-point range in February on better than five attempts.
Scoot’s gone back-to-back games with three 3-point hits and has topped his 1.5 make total six times in his last eight. Washington is a Bottom-5 team defending the arc, so Scoot is in prime position to launch with success.
