Syracuse Orange vs. SMU Mustangs: Game Highlights

DALLAS — — Keon Ambrose-Hylton tipped in the winning basket with 2.9 seconds remaining to lift SMU to a 77-75 win over Syracuse on Tuesday night.

Ambrose-Hylton had given the Mustangs (22-8, 13-6 ACC) their first lead of the second half when Boopie Miller fed him in the paint with 46 seconds remaining. Jaquan Carlos tied the game with a free throw before Ambrose-Hylton followed Miller’s miss for the winner. JJ Starling got up a shot from inside the halfcourt line but the ball went in-and-out at the buzzer.

Miller was back after missing five games with an injury and the point guard finished with 11 points and five assists. Kario Oquendo scored 16 points to lead six Mustangs in double figures.

Lucas Taylor scored 13 points and Jaquan Carlos 12 with eight assists for the Orange (12-18, 6-13), who also had six scorers in double figures.

Three-pointers by Chris Bell and Kyle Cuffe Jr. gave Syracuse a 12-point lead midway through the second half. SMU tied the game at 73-all on a Samet Yigitoglu free throw with 1:29 left.

The Orange led 41-36 at halftime after Carlos banked in a straightaway 3-pointer at the buzzer.

SMU held leads for only 1:28 of the game. The Mustangs shot 54% but were just 13 of 27 from the line. Syracuse shot 48% but gave up 16 points off 14 turnovers.

In Saturday regular-season finales, Syracuse is home against Virginia and SMU is at Florida State.

Syracuse fell 101-95 in an overtime heartbreaker against the Virginia Tech Hokies on Saturday. The Orange dipped to 12-17 overall and 6-12 in the ACC, hurting their final seeding in the impending 2025 ACC Tournament.

Jaquan Carlos forced overtime for Syracuse with a contested 3-pointer in the closing seconds of regulation. Jyare Davis paced the Orange with 21 points, and Eddie Lampkin Jr. hit his 13th double-double (16 points, 12 boards), but the Hokies held on in extra time as the Orange lost their fourth game in the last five outings.

Now, Syracuse shoots for a big upset against the ACC’s fourth-place Mustangs. SMU is 21-8 and 12-6 in conference play. But they are coming off a 73-68 loss to the Stanford Cardinal on Saturday. Tuesday will be the first meeting between Syracuse and SMU, and during SMU’s first season in the ACC after spending the previous 11 seasons in the American Athletic Conference.

Syracuse men’s basketball: what to watch for vs SMU

FILED UNDER:

Can the Orange bounce back in Dallas?

The Syracuse Orange (12-17, 6-12) are in Texas to play their first ACC game against the SMU Mustangs (21-8, 12-6). Tip off is at 9:00 pm tomorrow on ESPNU and here’s what we’re watching for:

Kevin: Pull back on the reins

We know Syracuse is going to have trouble stopping SMU’s offense, which is ranked 26th in efficiency by KenPom. What the Orange can’t do is keep turning the ball over and give the Mustangs room to run free. The best chance is to slow this game down and try and see if SMU can break out of the mud.

Mike: Know the assignment

Building off Kevin’s point: the Mustangs lead the ACC in steals, are second in offensive boards and FG%, and knock down a ton of threes. It’s a nasty combination to have put together. We’ve seen all season that once SU’s defense breaks down, nothing they do seems to get it back in shape, so everyone needs to be committed to their role from the jump if there’s any chance for an Orange upset.

Szuba: Defensive rebounding

Syracuse, for the most part, has done a good job of keeping opponents off the offensive glass this year. That will be tested against SMU, a team that ranks No. 10 in the country in offensive rebounding percentage. Syracuse has given up backbreaking rebounds at critical junctures of games this season. If the Orange manage to somehow keep this one close, rebounding will be key.

Dom: Feed what’s working

This was probably the most frustrating thing for most against Virginia Tech — Syracuse did very well in the first half running things through Davis and Lampkin inside and focusing on paint scoring. But in the second half, Syracuse never went back to going into that well. The key theme is going to be making a gameplan on offense and sticking with it because the Orange will need sustainable scoring considering the defensive struggles and how potent SMU’s own offense can be.

Max: Manage the turnover margin

I would be shocked if Syracuse wins the turnover battle tonight. SMU’s defense generates steals at an 11.3% rate per KenPom, the best of any ACC team in conference play. On the flip side, the Orange are atrocious with ball-handling against ACC foes, committing the second-highest turnover rate on offense while forcing the fewest on defense of any conference school. SU must take more care of the ball tonight if it wants a reasonable shot to win.
