‘The Masked Singer’ Reveals Identity of Bat: Here Is the Celebrity Under the Costume

Image

By Michael Schneider

SPOILER ALERT: Details follow for Season 13, Episode 4 of “The Masked Singer,” “Voices of Olympus: Unmasking of the Gods,” which aired March 5 on Fox.

“Vanderpump Rules” star Scheana Shay was the latest celebrity to be revealed Wednesday on Fox’s hit music competition series “The Masked Singer.” Shay was unmasked as the Bat, during the show’s “Voices of Olympus: Unmasking of the Gods” themed night.

For Bat, no one got it right — although everyone was in the reality TV arena. Robin Thicke said Bethanny Frankel. Jenny McCarthy-Wahlberg went with Larsa Pippen. Rita Ora named Heidi Montag at first, then went with Frankel as well. Ken Jeong thought it was Lisa Rinna.

Shay sang “Espresso,” by Sabrina Carpenter, for her performance. “I’m becoming Bat because I’m a creature of the night, and a bit of a bat-ass,” she said in her clue package. “Like bats, I’m one of the most misunderstood creatures ever. I’ve been forever villainized. Constantly portrayed as a blood sucking backstabber. And to that I say, ‘ew, get over it.’ I’m so not that bat. My real friends know I actually have a heart of gold. I’ve just been surrounded by a bunch of lunatics. And for years, all my words have been twisted upside down. I’m just out here partying and having the time of my life, girl.”

Sheana Shay as Bat joins Aubrey O’Day as Ant, Oscar de la Hoya as Fuzzy Peas and Cedric the Entertainer as Honey Pot as the celebrities unmasked on “The Masked Singer” Season 13.

Shay first appeared on Bravo‘s “Vanderpump Rules” in 2013 as part of the show’s original cast. Shay’s additional television credits include “90210,” “Victorious” and “Jonas,” among other titles.

“Voices of Olympus: Unmasking of the Gods” opened with five new Group B contestants, after Group A winners Coral and Paparazzo moved on to the next round last week.

Back for Season 13 are host Nick Cannon, alongside panelists Jenny McCarthy Wahlberg, Ken Jeong, Rita Ora and Robin Thicke. Ora was at the desk for a third consecutive season to fill in for Nicole Scherzinger.

New this season, a mysterious masked character dubbed “Detective Lucky Duck” will appear throughout the season to give clues and help the panelists “quack” the case of who’s under the masks. (He first appeared in this episode.)

Also new: The “Crack the Case” clue cases, in which more clues are shared about the eliminated contestant. Bat’s clue case included hoop earrings.” “Gold is a part of every major life event I’ve had, including the debut of my first single.” she said.

“The Masked Singer” Season 13 themed episodes include a tribute to franchises “Shrek” and “Ghostbusters,” as well as the Grand Ole Opry as it hits its 100th anniversary. Also on tap are a tribute to the Rat Pack and themes such as “Voices of Olympus: Unmasking of the Gods,” “Carnival,” “Boy Bands,” “Decades,” “Lucky 6 Speed Guessing,” a “Clash of the Masks” and the return of “Soundtrack of My Life.”

Masked contestants in Season 13 include Honey Pot, Space Ranger, Cherry Blossom, Coral, Fuzzy Peas, Ant, Paparazzo, Griffin, Boogie Woogie, Pearl and Bat, with more to be announced later.

Here were the performances on Wednesday’s Episode 4, “Voices of Olympus: Unmasking of the Gods”:

Song: “I Believe In a Thing Called Love,” by the Darkness

Panel guesses: Adam Lambert, Andy Samberg, Mika, Criss Angel

Boogie Woogie voiceover: “This is me. I am him. Becoming Boogie Woogie feels like disco destiny. Because my whole childhood I’d do anything to be the center of attention. Look at this guy. He’s certainly capturing the spotlight. Back in the day, I had extravagant dreams… of being a clown. So I taught myself how to juggle. Then in high school, I shifted to more serious aspirations: Being a magician! I even entered a talent show and won. When I graduated, the only job I could hustle up was busking. Which didn’t exactly pay the bills. There was more panic, less disco. But I trusted that this was my calling, because I believe in a thing called doing what you love. And one moment can change everything. Now Apollo, the god of music himself, has called me up here to add the Masked Singer to my resume. Right under magician and clown.”

Song: “Bad Blood,” by Taylor Swift

Panel guesses: Tracy Morgan, Floyd Mayweather, Marlon Wayans

Clue: “Taylor Swift is my homie. We go way back!” Clock on the belt.

Space Ranger voiceover: “Space Ranger is perfect because he’s futuristic and he lives on his own planet. Just like me! And I’m pumped for this mission. Because The Masked Singer has been on my bucket list for years. Throughout my childhood, I racked up quite a few accomplishments. Including winning gold and taking home some serious hardware to wear around my neck. Yet, with all that success comes the haters. I’m not everyone’s cup of tea. That’s why I’m channeling Aries, the god of war, to put them in their place. Becomes sometimes you just have some bad blood land on your doorstep, and you’ve got to show them all you’re worth the hype. And I’m going for the gold again, with a track from my bestie!”

Song: “Rewrite the Stars,” by Zac Efron and Zendaya

Panel guesses: Matthew Lillard, Freddie Prinze Jr., David Arquette

Clue: “The stage is my happy place. I love it here. I feel so lucky.”

Griffin voiceover: “Becoming the Griffin! Part eagle, part lion. One heck of a mythical creature. I can relate to that. When you become a star, you’re treated like a god. Everybody wants a piece. When I skyrocketed to overnight success, I wasn’t prepared for the fandom, the adoration. Little did I know this would immortalize me. I mean, a lady even took dirt off my car and said she’s take it home to her children. But the truth is, I’m only human. And I was reminded of that recently. The future I saw in the stars was all being rewritten. Now I know, this life is so precious. And I take every opportunity that comes my way. Like this. Tonight, I’m channeling the strength of Hercules. Because my resilience has gotten me through. And from here on out, I’m writing my own story.”

Song: “Espresso,” by Sabrina Carpenter

Panel guesses: Larsa Pippen, Lisa Rinna, Kristin Cavallari, Bethanny Frankel

Clue: “Nick, we actually spent a holiday together this year.”

Bat voiceover: “Wow, she is beautiful. I’m becoming Bat because I’m a creature of the night, and a bit of a bat-ass. Like bats, I’m one of the most misunderstood creatures ever. I’ve been forever villainized. Constantly portrayed as a blood sucking backstabber. And to that I say, ew, get over it. I’m so not that bat. My real friends know I actually have a heart of gold. I’ve just been surrounded by a bunch of lunatics. And for years, all my words have been twisted upside down. I’m just out here partying and having the time of my life, girl. Which is why I’m leaning into Dionysus as the god of partying, to show there’s nothing wrong with letting your hair down. So grab a shot of espresso, because you’re going to be up all night trying to figure me out.”

Song: “Saving All My Love For You,” by Whitney Houston

Panel guesses: Regina King, Shania Twain, Joan Jett

Clue: “I can tell you that I’ve never dressed this fancy before. Usually when I’m on the red carpet and they ask me what I’m wearing, I say, I got it on sale.”

Bat voiceover: “Oh my, look at her, she’s so fancy! Just like a pearl, you have to crack through a tough exterior to find the treasure inside. The same has been said about me my whole life. Growing up I’ve always loved performing. But people like me weren’t offered a chance at a big break. So I took any gig I could, from discount stores to dive bars, praying someone would see a pearl of talent within me. Eventually the world was my oyster. But I’ve never been able to shake that hard exterior. And it’s affected every aspect of my life. Especially love. But I’m a softie at heart, which is why tonight I’m embodying Aphrodite, the goddess of love. So watch out world, this Pearl is breaking out of its hard shell, and I hope you can see the beauty that has been hidden inside all along. And I’m doing a love song by Whitney, so pray for me!”

In Season 12, Boyz II Men (as the Buffalo) won the Masked trophy, beating out Mario, as the Wasp, who was this season’s runner-up. They joined AJ Michalka as Strawberry Shortcake; Kobie Turner as Goo, Jana Kramer as Royal Knight, Bronson Arroyo as Sherlock Hound, Drake Bell as Ice King, Bethany Hamilton as Macaron, Natalie Imbruglia as Bluebell, Laverne Cox as Chess Piece, Andy Richter as Dusty Bunny, Paula Cole as Ship, Marsai Martin as Woodpecker, Yvette Nicole Brown as Showbird and John Elway as Leaf Sheep as the celebrities unmasked on “The Masked Singer” Season 12.

“The Masked Singer” comes from Fox Alternative Entertainment. Rosie Seitchik, Craig Plestis and Cannon are executive producers, while Seitchik serves as showrunner. The series is based on the South Korean format created by Mun Hwa Broadcasting Corp.

The Masked Singer reveals Bat as major reality star and features Taylor Swift ‘bestie’ singing one of her hits

Plus, Lucky Duck popped up again to offer some additional clues.

MICHAEL BECKER / FOX

Warning: This article contains spoilers for The Masked Singer season 13, episode 4, “Voices of Olympus: Unmasking of the Gods.”

Five new masks rained down upon The Masked Singer stage as the “voices of Olympus” on Wednesday night — and no, we still don’t really know what that means, either.

The episode description read: “From the triumphs to the tragedies to the myths and the legends, deities Rita Ora and Jenny McCarthy-Wahlberg, the exalted Ken Jeong and the majestic Robin Thicke are prepared for a clash of the titans and an unmasking of the gods as the Group B premiere commences!” Basically, it was an excuse for the panel to do Gladiator cosplay, which was seemingly confirmed later in the episode when Jeong yelled that film’s iconic line — “Are you not entertained?!” — at the audience.

That aside, the episode did in fact bring in five new masks for the first time since the season 13 premiere, and they were about as bonkers as the night’s theme. First out of the gate was Boogie Woogie, which can best be described as “Muppet, but make it ABBA.” He sang “I Believe in a Thing Called Love” by the Darkness — all of the high notes included.

Then, Space Ranger came out, and had the distinct honor of being the first person on The Masked Singer to sing a song by Taylor Swift. It was a fitting choice, because Swift factored heavily into this out-of-this-world contestant’s clues. He even told the panel, “Taylor Swift is my homie, we go way back. She’s one of my besties.”

For the second week in a row, Lucky Duck turned up to offer some additional clues, this time with a new accent. “The panel may not have 20/20 vision, but that doesn’t mean you don’t get a bird’s-eye view. You shouldn’t have to wait, tick tock,” he said as he gave the audience a closer look at Space Ranger’s belt, which has a clock on it. (There also appeared to be some sort of Masked mystery board behind Lucky Duck. Hmmm… wonder if there are more clues there.)

Next, it was time for Griffin, the only costume particularly on theme for the evening. He sang “Rewrite the Stars” by Zac Efron and Zendaya from The Greatest Showman. Afterward, McCarthy-Wahlberg and Jeong joined forces on their guess that he was David Arquette, a rare melding of the minds for those two.

Then it was Bat’s turn to sing “Espresso” by Sabrina Carpenter. She apparently had some connections to both McCarthy-Wahlberg and host Nick Cannon. Pearl finally ended things, boldly choosing to sing a Whitney Houston song, “Saving All My Love for You.” (And Ora’s jaw never left the floor as she did so.)

The first to go home from this new crop of singers was Bat. Before she could fly off the stage, everyone had to offer their final guesses. All of the panel was decently close, opting to go for various reality TV stars. Ora first chose Heidi Montag, but later piggybacked off of Thicke’s guess of Bethenny Frankel. McCarthy-Wahlberg went with Larsa Pippen, and Jeong stuck with Lisa Rinna.

STEVE GRANITZ/FILMMAGIC

For the second time this season, though, no one got it right, and Bat was unmasked to reveal Vanderpump Rules star Scheana Shay.

This means next week’s episode will feature Space Ranger, Boogie Woogie, Pearl, and Griffin battling it out to inch their way closer to cementing a spot in the Group B finals. Stay tuned for that next Wednesday at 8 p.m. ET/PT on Fox.

‘The Masked Singer’ spoilers: Who is Boogie Woogie?

Boogie Woogie made his debut on the March 5 episode of The Masked Singer Season 13 as a member of Group B. The fuzzy 1970s throwback’s first song on Fox’s reality TV show was “I Believe in a Thing Called Love” by the Darkness, and he had the four panelists (Robin Thicke, Jenny McCarthy-Wahlberg, Ken Jeong, and Rita Ora) guessing such famous names as Adam Lambert, Andy Samberg, Mika, and Criss Angel.

But who is Boogie Woogie? If you’re looking for The Masked Singer spoilers and clues, you’ve come to the right place! Read on for everything to know about Boogie Woogie, including which famous celebrity we think is hiding underneath the mask.

Gold Derby’s official guess for Boogie Woogie is … Neil Patrick Harris! Don’t believe us? Let’s examine all of the clues so far, one by one:

Here is what Boogie Woogie had to say about himself: “Becoming Boogie Woogie feels like disco destiny, ’cause my whole childhood, I’d do anything to be the center of attention. And look at this guy. He’s certainly capturing the spotlight. Back in the day, I had extravagant dreams … of being a clown. So I taught myself to juggle. Then in high school, I shifted to more serious aspirations … being a magician. I even entered a talent show and won. When I graduated, the only job I could hustle up was busking, which didn’t exactly pay the bills. It was more panic, less disco. But I trusted that this was my calling, because I believe in a thing called doing what you love. And one moment can change everything. Now Apollo, the god of music himself, has called me up here to add The Masked Singer to my resumé, right under magician and clown.”

Harris is a lifelong fan of the illusionist arts, even serving as the president of Hollywood’s Magic Castle between 2011 and 2014. He juggled on the Rachael Ray Show and performed magic on the Emmys when he hosted in 2013.

On-screen hints during Boogie Woogie’s video package included the following: a disco ball, juggling balls, a magic wand, a magician’s top hat, Boogie Woogie Magazine, quarters from 1972, and a piano. Again, the juggling and magic clues all refer to Harris’ obsession with magic. The magazine is a wink to his lifestyle-focused newsletter, Wondercade. And he was born in 1973, just months after the year on the quarters.

Following his performance of “I Believe in a Thing Called Love,” Boogie Woogie revealed: “Now listen, my main magic trick for this whole situation is to make the other monsters and singers disappear. But in a loving, fun situation.” Harris has performed many magic tricks in his life, and his competitive spirit is always on full display, as evidenced by his various awards show contests, hosting gigs, and game show appearances.
