Red Wings hold late lead, beat Wild on two goals by Edvinsson
This time the Red Wings didn’t lose a third-period lead.
After having problems the last two games with such a development, the Wings kept the lead Tuesday and took home a 3-2 victory over Minnesota.
Simon Edvinsson scored two goals, including the tie-breaking goal in the third period. Edvinsson’s defensive partner Albert Johansson saw Edvinsson skate off the bench and fed Edvinsson for a blast from the point, Edvinsson’s seventh goal, at 11 minutes, 35 seconds.
The Wild pulled goaltender Filip Gustavsson in the final 90 seconds and it almost capitalized against the Wings once again. Marco Rossi, who scored the overtime winner Saturday against the Wings after a Minnesota comeback, missed an open net that would have tied the game.
Goaltender Cam Talbot made 22 saves to earn the victory.
“We didn’t get scored on,” coach Todd McLellan told FDSN after the victory, about what he liked about the Wings’ handing the six-on-five situation. “They had a real good scoring chance, but they have six players and we have five and it happens that way sometimes. Our structure was fairly good. We made one mistake and it almost ended up in the net. We handled ourselves well in that situation. There was some poise.”
BOX SCORE: Red Wings 3, Wild 2
The victory gave the Wings (30-22-6) sole possession of the first wild-card spot and a two-point lead (66-64) over Columbus. The two teams play each other Thursday at Little Caesars Arena and Saturday at outdoors, at historic Ohio Stadium, in crucial games for playoff positioning.
“This is the hardest part of the season,” Edvinsson told FDSN. “Everyone wants to get into the playoffs and it’s not an easy game. We need all the points we can get.”
The Wings have won nine of their last 13 games (9-2-2). They split two home games last weekend after losing third periods against Minnesota and Anaheim but held on to Tuesday’s lead late in the third period.
Goals from Vladimir Tarasenko (power play) and Edvinsson three minutes apart in the second period tied the game 2-2.
Tarasenko made it 2-1 with his eighth goal. Erik Gustafsson drifted to the high slot and made a fine pass finding Tarasenko alone near the goal line, Tarasenko one-timing a shot past goaltender Filip Gustavsson at 10:12.
The Wings tied it three minutes later on Edvinsson’s goal.

J.T. Compher won a battle along the boards and fed Alex DeBrincat on the wing. DeBrincat fed Edvinsson skating into the zone and Edvinsson ripped a shot from long distance past Gustavsson.
“We didn’t play real poor in the first period,” McLellan said. “We found a way to scrap ourselves back into the game. It wasn’t a pretty night for either team, not a lot of shots, not a lot of scoring chances. It almost felt like a playoff game, tight checking and muck and grind.
“But it was good for us to experience it and good for us to find a way to win.”
Marco Rossi (power play) and Jakub Lauko had first-period Wild goals.

The Detroit Red Wings hit the road on Tuesday night in the hopes they can get revenge against the Minnesota Wild after a tough game this past weekend.
The Red Wings and Wild met this past Saturday in Detroit. The Wing seemed to be in control of the game, leading 3-1 until the late stages of the third period. However, two goals from the Wild in regulation, topped with another in overtime, and Detroit found itself on the losing end of a 4-3 final score.
The Wings managed to bounce back the next night, though it was not without stress. Detroit squandered a 4-2 lead against the Anaheim Ducks. However, Patrick Kane’s tally in OT gave the Red Wings a 5-4 victory.
The Red Wings are fourth in the Atlantic Division, holding the first Wild Card spot in the Eastern Conference.
The Wild have not played since beating the Wings, giving them plenty of time to prepare to try and extend their win streak to four. Minnesota is third in the Central Division, 11 points back of the first-place Winnipeg Jets.

Game Day Updates: Red Wings at Wild
The Detroit Red Wings are in the Twin Cities tonight, with another meeting against the Minnesota Wild after the Red Wings blew a late lead and fell 4-3 in overtime on Saturday. The Red Wings repeated the lost lead on Sunday against Anaheim but prevailed in overtime. The result of taking three-of-four points is critical, but the Red Wings will need to make sure that does not become a trend should they hold another late lead.
The major news this week has been covered, but if you missed it, Ville Husso is now a Duck (or a San Diego Gull now) — more relevant to the Red Wings for cap space than lineup reasons — and Andrew Copp is sidelined for the remainder of the season.
I know not everyone loves the contract, but it significantly thins Detroit’s center position, which was not deep organizationally to begin with. Adding to that, Michael Rasmussen is a center-in-a-pinch option and is not on this one-game trip, but is hopefully only out for the short term.
Sheldon Dries has been recalled from the Griffins (and is a natural center), but Christian Fischer is slated to return to the lineup tonight.
It all makes for interesting timing with the trade deadline set for next Friday (March 7). Detroit has five more games until then, so the front office has about a week-and-a-half to determine if they want to break the organization’s deadline “selling” streak, or ride out the hot streak this team has been on for the last two months, sans Copp.
