BUFFALO, NY – Defencemen Mattias Ekholm and John Klingberg will remain out of the lineup for the third straight game on Monday night when the Edmonton Oilers begin a four-game road trip at KeyBank Center against the Buffalo Sabres.
Both blueliners are currently nursing minor issues, and Head Coach Kris Knoblauch said it’s important not to force either one of them into playing through an injury with 19 regular-season games remaining and playoffs on the horizon.
“Where we are in the season, I think it’s really important that we rest and recover – especially with Ekholm,” Head Coach Kris Knoblauch said. “For as much hockey he’s played, didn’t have the break over the 4 Nations, which would have been very beneficial for him. We just obviously want to get those guys as healthy as possible for the stretch.”
Jeff Skinner will return to the lineup in a third-line role with Mattias Janmark and Connor Brown against his former Buffalo Sabres team, where he spent six seasons from 2018-24.
Goaltender Stuart Skinner will make his third consecutive start in goal.

BUFFALO, N.Y. (WIVB) — The Sabres got two goals from Tage Thompson and 32 saves from Ukko-Pekka Luukkonen to end their six-game skid with a 3-2 victory against the Edmonton Oilers on Monday night at KeyBank Center.
Trade deadline acquisition Josh Norris set up Thompson’s winning goal on a 2-on-1 rush at 3:20 into the third period. Thompson moved into the top six in the NHL with 33 goals this season. He also scored Buffalo’s opening goal off a rebound in the first period.
Alex Tuch had the other goal for the Sabres, and Luukkonen made 12 of his saves in the final period, including three in big stops late against the Oilers’ top five power play starring Connor McDavid and the league’s leading goal scorer Leon Draisaitl.
Buffalo plays next at Detroit on Wednesday night before hosting former captain Jack Eichel and the Vegas Golden Knights on Saturday.

Tage Thompson scores twice to lift the Sabres over the Oilers 3-2, ending a six-game losing streak
BUFFALO, N.Y. (AP) — Tage Thompson scored two goals and led the Buffalo Sabres to a 3-2 win against the Edmonton Oilers on Monday night.
Thompson’s goals upped his team-leading goal total to 33 and Alex Tuch also scored to help the Sabres end a six-game losing streak in which they went 0-5-1. Ukko-Pekka Luukkonen made 32 saves.
Evan Bouchard and Darnell Nurse scored, and Leon Draisaitl had two assists for the Oilers, who have lost seven of their last 10 . Stuart Skinner made 19 saves.
Draisaitl’s secondary assist on Nurse’s goal 1:35 into the second extended his point streak to 15 games. He has 11 goals and 12 assists during the streak.
Sabres: After dropping their last two games on the road against Tampa Bay and Florida, Buffalo made up for it with a nervy effort against one of the top teams in the Western Conference.
Oilers: Edmonton was unable to gain ground on the Pacific Division leading Vegas Golden Knights who maintained a four-point lead.
Luukkonen came up with a big glove save on Draisaitl with 4:54 left in the third period with the Oilers on a power play.
Thompson has 16 points in his past 13 games including 11 goals. He leads the Sabres with five multigoal games this season.
Oilers play at New Jersey on Thursday, and Sabres visit Detroit on Wednesday.
