A winter storm warning is in effect for the Twin Cities and much of western Wisconsin, while most of southern Minnesota is under a blizzard warning until Wednesday afternoon.
Heavy snow will taper to lighter snow and then flurries through the morning commute, with snow wrapping up by lunchtime. Difficult travel is expected as the cleanup process continues into the afternoon.
After the snow, it’ll turn sunny Wednesday afternoon, but it’ll stay windy. By Wednesday night, it’ll be cold and quiet, as breezes gradually relax. Thursday will be tranquil and sunny, with a high of around 36 degrees. The angle of the March sun will help melt all this snow.
The snowstorm led to numerous school closings and delays on Wednesday. You can find a list here.
FOX 9 is tracking the storm as it moves through Minnesota. We will have live coverage starting at 2 a.m. Wednesday.

Winter storm wallops metro, southern Minnesota with rain, snow and wind

Several school districts are closed or delayed. Metro Transit service has suspended bus service until further notice, but the light rail continues to operate.

Schools are closed or delayed, snow emergencies are in effect and travel is downright difficult after a winter storm battered the metro area and much of southern Minnesota overnight.
In the Twin Cities, Metro Transit and Maple Grove Transit have suspended bus service until further notice, the agencies said. Light-rail trains continued to operate.
A few more inches of heavy wet snow will fall Wednesday in the metro area morning before a winter storm warning ends at 3 p.m., the National Weather Service said.
Blizzard warnings remained in effect across southern Minnesota as winds gusting to 45 mph was blowing snow around reducing visibility and creating whiteout conditions, the weather service said.
A number of major roads remained closed Wednesday morning, including Interstate 90 between Luverne and Blue Earth. A no-travel advisory was in effect for Freeborn, Faribault, Blue Earth, Brown, Waseca, Nicollet, Le Sueur, Rock and Sibley counties, the Minnesota Department of Transportation said.
At 6:30 a.m., metro area roads remained snow covered and littered with crashes and spin outs, according to MnDOT.
“Every incident slows things down,” said MnDOT spokeswoman Anne Meyer, reiterating the need to drive slow and leave plenty of room between vehicles.
Plows hit the roads Tuesday night and will be on the job all day Wednesday, Meyer said. Wet slushy snow and wind blowing it around will hamper efforts until weather conditions improve, she said.

“It will be a long day,” Meyer said. “It was quite a storm.”
Treacherous conditions led St. Paul Public Schools to call an e-learning day. In Minneapolis, students in kindergarten through grade 5 get the day off due to a “Severe Weather Day.” Students in grades six to 12 will have an e-learning day, the district said.
Centennial, Bloomington, Lakeville, Wayzata, Osseo and Mounds View are among suburban districts switching to a flexible or at home learning day while others such Robbinsdale and Anoka-Hennepin closed for the day.
Neither Minneapolis nor St. Paul had called a snow emergency as of 5:30 a.m., but other cities such as Robbinsdale, Eden Prairie, Crystal, Golden Valley have.
Metro Mobility warned riders that trips could be delayed Wednesday and asked customers who could reschedule their trips to do so.
Minnesota Valley Transit Authority said its on-demand ride service, Connect, would not operate until 8 a.m. due to ice and snow.
About 8,000 Xcel Energy customers were without power Wednesday morning, the utility said.
Snow totals were still coming, but the leader appeared to be Woodbury, where 10 inches of snow had fallen as of early Wednesday.

Schools closed, Metro Transit suspends bus service as winter storm wallops southern Minnesota
ABOUT THE WRITER
Blizzard leads to road and school closures, power outages across southern Minnesota
A major late-winter storm continued to wallop southern and eastern Minnesota early Wednesday, bringing heavy snow, howling winds and blizzard conditions.
Many school districts — including some as far north as the Twin Cities — delayed or canceled classes, or moved to online learning. Metro Transit temporarily suspended bus service in the Twin Cities. And the Minnesota Department of Transportation closed many highways across the southwest and south-central parts of the state — including long stretches of Interstate 90 between Luverne and Albert Lea.
“If I-90 is bad enough to be closed, the surrounding roads are worse. Please stay home and stay safe,” Nobles County Emergency Management in southwest Minnesota reported late Tuesday.
The closures also included State Highway 60 from the Iowa state line to Mankato.
Scott Morgan is assistant district engineer for maintenance operations for MnDOT’s District 7, covering south-central Minnesota. He told MPR’s Morning Edition that Tuesday’s rain created a layer of ice beneath the snow that fell overnight.
“We’ve still got people out in plows trying to get roads opened up again, but it’s an uphill battle. The visibility is really reduced, and as they’re plowing the snow, of course, it comes across, and makes it even worse for them as they’re on the roads,” Morgan said early Wednesday.
The State Patrol reported more than 200 crashes and spinouts on highways across the state between midnight and 7 a.m. Wednesday.
Snowfall reports relayed by the National Weather Service early Wednesday included 10.5 inches at Ellendale, 10 inches in Woodbury, 8.5 inches at Apple Valley, 7.5 inches near Kenyon and 6 inches near Faribault.
The official total at the Twin Cities airport as of 6 a.m. was 7.4 inches.
North winds have been gusting in excess of 45 miles per hour.
School districts closed Wednesday include Anoka-Hennepin, Mankato and Rochester. St. Paul Public Schools moved to online learning. And Minneapolis Public Schools canceled classes for grades pre-K through 5, with e-learning for grades 6-12.
“Middle and high school students must have an e-learning day in order to be sure that MPS meets the state-required instructional hours,” the district reported early Wednesday. Find a full list of school closings and delays below.
Blizzard warnings run through 3 p.m. Wednesday for southern Minnesota. The Twin Cities metro area is under a winter storm warning until 3 p.m. Find more forecast information on MPR Weather’s Updraft blog.
Shortly before 6 a.m., Metro Transit reported that it was suspending all bus service in the Twin Cities until further notice due to the poor road conditions. That includes Metro Mobility service.
Light rail and Northstar service continued to operate as usual.
Minneapolis-St. Paul International Airport reported about two dozen delayed or canceled flights as of 6:30 a.m. Airport officials said MSP’s snow removal team worked overnight to clear runways.
The combination of wet, heavy, concrete-like snow and those strong winds gusting to 50 mph or greater have led to power outages across the region.
Utility companies in the Twin Cities and points south reported more than 10,000 homes and businesses without power as of 7:15 a.m. Wednesday.
Xcel Energy said Tuesday that it was tracking the forecasts and “will stage additional crews Wednesday to respond to any outages, responding to the largest outages first to quickly get the most customers back online as soon as possible.”
