GdS: Stadium, sporting director and mercato – Milan CEO in New York for a series of summits

Image

Some important decisions will soon have to be made regarding AC Milan’s future and the CEO, Giorgio Furlani, has flown to New York for a series of summits with RedBird officials – including Gerry Cardinale.

Furlani is currently in New York and has a series of meetings on the agenda, meeting with the owner Cardinale already yesterday to take stock of matters. The two will have more meetings as some important decisions are on the cards, as Gazzetta dello Sport explains (see photo below).

The people in question have reiterated that these are routine meetings, but if anything, it’s clear that more time is needed as so many topics must be discussed in person: a new stadium, structure of the management, transfer market, and a technical direction.

Furlani and Cardinale had a meeting yesterday to take stock of the situation in general, but over the coming days, there will be more meetings between the two. The owner has personally involved himself in the pursuit of a new sporting director and more, knowing that Milan have some important decisions on the cards.

Among other things, the stadium situation will be discussed between the two as this remains one of Cardinale’s main goals. The city council of Milan is expecting a proposal from Milan and Inter regarding San Siro, which involves the clubs buying it altogether.

A substantial proposal will arrive, with all of the details and complete with feasibility studies. However, the San Donato option remains open, seeing as there is no guarantee that the city council will accept the aforementioned proposal.

As said, Cardinale is involved in the pursuit of a new sporting director and he has been working closely with Zlatan Ibrahimovic in the matter. They both met Andrea Berta, Fabio Paratici and Igli Tare in London recently, but it’s still too early to make a decision.

The foundation must be right this time, from the sporting director to the coach, so it was decided to move ahead with caution. Furlani also has to get involved to evaluate the candidates and express a decisive, speaking on behalf of both RedBird and Elliott Management.

The shared idea is to expand the management with a figure that can be a reference for the team’s daily activities, acting as a link between the coach and the management. It must be someone who is willing to work in a team, as such, and more candidates could be revealed in the coming weeks.

In the meantime, Furlani will also be able to dedicate himself to other topics and other activities. It’s no coincidence that he had meetings with representatives of other areas of Redbird yesterday: there are many interests to cultivate.

Worst CEO in history ,judahh

Furlani flies to the USA for crucial meeting with Milan owner Cardinale – report

Image

La Gazzetta dello Sport reports Milan CEO Giorgio Furlani will meet club owner Gerry Cardinale in New York today to discuss the Rossoneri’s short-term and long-term strategies.

Milan CEO Furlani has travelled to New York to meet club owner Cardinale today.

As Gazzetta reported, the meeting between the club director and owner will be crucial to determining the club’s strategies in the short and long term.

It surely is not a routine meeting, as Furlani’s trips to the USA to meet Cardinale are rare.

According to the pink paper, Furlani and Cardinale will discuss the club’s management until the end of the season. The team is in a challenging situation, 11 points below the top four after three consecutive defeats in Serie A.

Coach Sergio Conceiçao will lead the team against Lecce on Saturday, but the Portuguese is expected to leave at the end of the season.

Furlani and Cardinale will also discuss the long-term plans, especially in terms of finances, as the Rossoneri are unlikely to qualify for the Champions League, missing out on substantial incomes for 2025-26.

This issue directly relates to the summer transfer window, during which Rafael Leao, Theo Hernandez, and Mike Maignan could leave San Siro.

Another key matter is the appointment of a new sporting director, with Igli Tare and Fabio Paratici seen as the leading candidates for the role.

we’ll never go anywhere as long as the yanks & ibra stay #vatteneibra #vattenecardinale

Hopefully there looking to sell the club. This guy will never bank roll the club like previous owners would do of we missed out on the champions league. A

God Bless America.

There’s nothing to discuss but a sale. Someone who wants the club to win needs to take over. The value of the Milan brand now compared to with Maldini and the Scudetto is nothing.

Vision, track record and the coach factor: Milan’s sporting director candidates compared

In recent years, the figure of the sporting director has taken on an increasingly central role in the dynamics of clubs aiming for the top.

In this perspective, Milan are looking for the right profile to fill a role that for too many years has been relegated to being almost a supporting role. Rather ironically, the last sporting director that the club had left due to a disagreement, so getting it right this time is crucial.

Since the sacking of Paolo Maldini and Ricky Massara, Geoffrey Moncada has been the technical director of the club. Antonio D’Ottavio was also promoted to sporting director, but reports earlier this season suggested that he stepped down due to having a different vision.

Who will replace him and begin the planning for the 2025-26 season, ahead of what is a pivotal summer? It seems that the Milan leadership have narrowed the list down to two candidates: Igli Tare and Fabio Paratici.

Both have held prestigious positions, but with very different paths and results. In a possible head-to-head battle to take the reins and decide the future of Milan, which of the two would be the best option?

The Toronto Maple Leafs acquired forward Scott Laughton plus fourth- and sixth-round picks from the Philadelphia Flyers for forward Nikita Grebenkin and a first-rounder, the teams announced Friday. Flyers general manager Daniel Briere acknowledged the emotional challenge of trading Laughton to the Toronto Maple Leafs, admitting the move was “a little scary” for the franchise. “There’s no doubt that it’s a little scary,” Briere said, per The Athletic’s Kevin Kurz. “He was a big part of the culture that we’ve been re-establishing the last couple years ”But at some point, too, you’ve got to let some of the young guys start to take over.” Laughton, a fan favorite and respected locker room leader, had spent his entire 661-game NHL career with the Flyers before being dealt to Toronto. Briere admitted that moving Laughton was “one of the most difficult” decisions he has made as GM, especially given Laughton’s leadership role in the Flyers locker room. “We thank Scott for everything that he’s done, and hopefully he leaves an imprint on our locker room and you see some of the young guys use what they’ve learned from Scott,” Briere said. According to Kurz, the Flyers received significant interest in Laughton. Briere confirmed that over a dozen teams called about the center, with Philadelphia’s brass ultimately sending him home to Toronto, which seemed like a fitting outcome in Briere’s eyes. “It’s kind of a cool ending for him, having the chance to go back home, with the tragedy that they’ve had to endure this season as a family,” Briere said. Laughton, 30, has 11 goals and 27 points in 60 games this season and should slide into Toronto’s third forward line behind current and former team captains Auston Matthews and John Tavares, respectively.

The Toronto Maple Leafs made a surprising decision to create some cap space ahead of Friday by waiving enforcer winger Ryan Reaves before the NHL trade deadline. Maple Leafs general manager Brad Treliving, however, made it clear that the move didn’t mark the end of Reaves’ time with the franchise. “My hope is we can get him back here sooner rather than later,” Treliving said after the deadline passed on Friday. “But, obviously, you’ve got to work within the guidelines there. I’m glad that Ryan didn’t go anywhere today.” Treliving was referring to Reaves, 38, clearing waivers and subsequently being assigned to the Leafs’ AHL affiliate, the Toronto Marlies. By waiving Reaves, the Leafs were able to trade for former Philadelphia Flyers center Scott Laughton before pulling off a last-minute blockbuster deal for former Boston Bruins defenseman Brandon Carlo. Treliving acknowledged that waiving Reaves was a difficult decision but emphasized the forward’s continued importance to the team. “That was a difficult conversation,” Treliving said. “Ryan’s a true pro. This isn’t goodbye, right? Ryan’s still a big part of our locker room. He’s part of the team.” Reaves, who signed a three-year, $4.05 million contract with Toronto in July 2023, has yet to score a goal this season while having notched just two assists in 35 games for the Leafs before being waived. Reaves is still under contract for another season at a $1.35 million cap hit. For now, Reaves remains assigned to the Marlies, but it’s unclear if he will report to the AHL squad. As noted by Nick Barden of The Hockey News, the Leafs navigated a similar situation in 2022 when Wayne Simmonds was sent to the AHL but never played a game there.

The Pittsburgh Steelers are keeping the fan base on edge as the organization still does not have a starting quarterback set in stone for the 2025 season. Free agency officially opens up on March 12th, and although the organization has said it wants to re-sign either Justin Fields or Russell Wilson, both quarterbacks are still slated to hit the open market. The Steelers prefer Fields moving forward, but the quarterback is going to test the open market in order to see what his true value might be. Fields and the Steelers have discussing a new deal, but it is the smart move for the quarterback to see what is out there for him. He can always bring any offer he gets from a different organization back to Pittsburgh to see if the franchise will match the offer. Fields is going to have a decent amount of interest, as teams like the New York Jets, Indianapolis Colts, and now the Seattle Seahawks could all be interested. NFL writer Daniel Jeremiah has been keeping a close eye on the upcoming free agent market, and he is must intrigued by Fields. Jeremiah seems to believe Fields will be deciding between Pittsburgh and New York, which likely rules out any other organization that may want to throw its hat in the ring. New York has an intriguing new leadership group including Head Coach Aaron Glenn, who played against Fields twice a year while both sides were in the NFC North. In addition to having some familiarity with Glenn, Fields also knows star wide receiver Garrett Wilson quite well. The two played together at Ohio State for two seasons, where the receiver was one of Fields’ favorite targets. This could be a factor that will attract Fields to New York, and it will likely become a no-brainer for the quarterback if he gets offered a lucrative deal. It makes all the sense in the world for Fields to go out and test the market, but the Steelers need to be sure they are making competitive offers. The organization has become known for being relatively cheap, and it needs to make Fields feel wanted with whatever offer is submitted. The quarterback has some trust issues to get past after being replaced by Russell Wilson during the 2024 season, and a good contract offer might be able to do that. Fields has had nothing but inconsistency so far in his NFL career. During his time with the Chicago Bears he played under two different head coaches and two different offensive coordinators. This makes life difficult on a young quarterback in the NFL, and if he decides to return to Pittsburgh he would be returning to the same offense with the same coaching staff. Steelers Are At A Disadvantage If Their Competition Is The Jets The Jets are currently a mystery, and that is an advantage for them. Glenn comes from the Detroit Lions, which was also a franchise that was one of the worst in the league, and now they are a powerhouse in the NFC. It is reasonable to think Glenn can pull off a similar transformation in New York. This may make Fields want to join the Jets, along a better offer coming from New York. New York is also a bigger market, and definitely a more attractive place to play. The organization already stole Aaron Curry from Pittsburgh, and now they may do the same with Fields. Pittsburgh is at a disadvantage, but hopefully the quarterback opts for the familiarity he has with the Steelers. Do the Jets worry you at all? Where do you think Fields ends up?

Everybody who follows college wrestling even a little bit knew that Penn State star Mitchell Mesenbrink was going to make it to the semifinals of the Big Ten championships this weekend in Evanston, Illinois. But few would have predicted the way it went down. Mesenbrink tech-falled 15 of his 17 opponents in the regular season. So, naturally, many assumed that Mesenbrink would get to the semifinals via tech fall. Well, that’s not what happened. Ohio State’s Paddy Gallagher (No. 9) beat Northwestern’s Maxx Mayfield (No. 8) 7-2 to earn a shot against top-seeded Mesenbrink in the quarterfinals. But for reasons that are not clear yet, Gallagher took a medical default against Mesenbrink. Mesenbrink won the Big Ten title last season at 165 and is now two wins away from doing it again.
