Warren Harding graduate leaves Steelers in free agency

MIAMI, Florida (WKBN) – NFL Network’s Tom Pelissero is reporting that a Warren Harding graduate and former Pittsburgh Steelers offensive lineman has agreed to terms on a free agent deal with the Miami Dolphins.

It is reportedly a 3-year contract worth $24 million.

James Daniels appeared in 36 games with the Steelers with 36 starts.

The 27-year-old played in just four games last season but suffered a torn Achilles.

Prior to his time in Pittsburgh, he played four seasons with the Chicago Bears.

He was originally selected in the second round of the 2018 NFL Draft out of the University of Iowa.

Daniels spent the past three seasons in Pittsburgh, after signing with the Steelers in free agency in 2022.

Daniels was a three-year starter at Warren Harding, an Honorable Mention All-State lineman and a member of the WKBN Five Blocks of Granite in 2014.

The Miami Dolphins have reportedly agreed to terms with their second player during the early free agency period. Miami is bringing in former Steelers and Bears guard James Daniels on a three-year contract worth $24 million, per Tom Pelissero and Ian Rapoport.

After being drafted with the 39th overall pick in the 2018 NFL draft, Daniels spent the first four years of his professional career with the Chicago Bears. And for the past three years, he’s been representing the Pittsburgh Steelers

He spent the first two years with Chicago playing in every game, but his 2020 season was cut short due to a pectoral tear in the fifth game of the season. And after playing 32 games through his first two years in Pittsburgh, he suffered a torn achilles that cut his season short last year.

Through four games last year, Daniels had been in the midst of one of the best stretches of his career. He had a 92.9 Pro Football Focus grade through his 209 snaps in 2024.

Daniels is the second player set to sign with the Dolphins when free agency officially opens Wednesday. He joins quarterback Zach Wilson who is set to come in on a one-year deal worth up to $10 million.

Instant grade for Dolphins landing Zach Wilson in free agency

Daniels, 27, was a second-round pick of the Chicago Bears in 2018 who is highly regarded, particularly as a run blocker, but has suffered two season-ending injuries in the past five years.

Daniels tore a pectoral muscle in the fifth game of the 2020 season while with the Bears, then tore his Achilles in the fourth game last season while playing for the Pittsburgh Steelers.

But he started all 17 games in 2022 and 15 games in 2023.

Miami is giving him a three-year, $24 million deal, so they peg him as one of their new starting guards.

Daniels is 6-feet-4 and 327 pounds. He attended Iowa.

Borom, 25, was the Bears’ fifth-round pick in 2021 and a starter in 27 of 47 games for Chicago.

Pro Football Focus rated him 70th out of 81 tackles last season. The Dolphins likely will see how he does in workouts under line coach Butch Barry before making any decision on playing time.

Borom is 6-5 and 333 pounds. He attended Missouri.
