LINCOLN, Neb.. — — Payton Sandfort scored 22 points, his brother Pryce knocked down four 3-pointers and Iowa pulled away in the second half to beat Nebraska 83-68, on Saturday, knocking the Cornhuskers out of the Big Ten Conference Tournament field and claiming the final slot for itself on the final day of the regular season.

The Hawkeyes (16-15, 7-13) entered the game one slot out of the field and needed the win to climb into a five-way tie for 14th with Nebraska (17-14, 7-13), Minnesota, USC and Northwestern. After Rutgers beat Minnesota in overtime Sunday, Wednesday’s first-round games will be Northwestern-Minnesota, Iowa-Ohio State and USC-Rutgers.

Nebraska jumped to an 18-10 lead eight minutes into the game but Josh Dix answered with a layup and Drew Thelwell, Pryce Sandfort and Brock Harding each knocked down a 3 to put Iowa in front. The Cornhuskers tied the game at 31-31 on a Berke Buyuktuncel layup but Pryce Sandfort hit from deep and knocked down a jumper and Payton Sandfort scored twice to send Iowa into the break with a 40-35 lead.

Iowa basketball: Hawkeyes to face Ohio State in first round of Big Ten Tournament

LINCOLN, Neb. — After an 83-68 win over rival Nebraska on Sunday, Iowa men’s basketball qualified for this season’s Big Ten Tournament.

Previously, every team in the Big Ten was included in the event. But a new format is debuting this season and only 15 of the 18 conference teams make the Big Ten Tournament.

As of Sunday morning, there was one spot remaining in the Big Ten Tournament field, an event that includes 15 of the 18 league teams. Two teams were vying for that final opening.

And they just happened to be playing each other.

Win and you’re in the Big Ten Tournament.

Lose and you’re out.

Iowa came out victorious.

Washington, Penn State and Nebraska missed this season’s event.

The Hawkeyes will now turn their attention to the Big Ten Tournament. Iowa is the 15-seed in the Big Ten Tournament and will face 10-seed Ohio State on Wednesday. The game will tip off at approximately 5 p.m. CT.

Iowa and Ohio State met one time during the regular season. The Hawkeyes’ road troubles this season were apparent during that matchup in Columbus as Ohio State won 82-65. The Buckeyes, however, haven’t been playing great lately. They went just 4-6 over their last 10 regular-season games.

The winner of the game between Iowa and Ohio State will play 7-seed Illinois on Thursday.

Here is a look at the full bracket:

It is a rematch of Iowa’s lone Big Ten Tournament game last season. The Buckeyes ended Iowa’s hopes of getting hot and making a run for a berth in the NCAA Tournament.
