Major Water Main Break Affects Pressure In Jersey City, Hoboken
JERSEY CITY, NJ — A water main break overnight near the Jersey City/Hoboken border was affecting water pressure to both towns, said Veolia Water.
The city of Hoboken delayed schools 90 minutes on Tuesday and told residents there to boil their water.
A Veolia spokesman told Patch on Tuesday that there was no similar order for Jersey City.
Veolia crews had said Monday evening around 5 p.m. that they were responding to a break at Eighteenth Street and Jersey Avenue.
They said water pressure “in the vicinity” might be low and advised flushing taps.
“Crews continue emergency repairs at 18th & Jersey Ave.,” they wrote. “Customers in the vicinity my encounter low pressure and/or discolored water from naturally occurring sediments stirred up within the main. Flush taps until water runs clear.”
But Tuesday morning around 6 a.m., they wrote, “Crews are working to restore water pressure to Hoboken following emergency repairs to a 36-inch main. we will continue to provide updates…as work progresses.”
Water pressure was low throughout Hoboken. Hoboken’s public schools were delayed 90 minutes Tuesday morning.
Patch will update this breaking story when more information is received.

Boil water advisory issued in Hoboken as schools call for delayed opening
A 36-inch water main break in Jersey City led to a boil water advisory in Hoboken and a delayed opening Tuesday for the city’s schools.
The boil water advisory was issued due to fluctuations in water pressure from the efforts to fix the break at 18th Street and Jersey Avenue, according to Veolia water company.
“Customers, even if their water is filtered at home, must boil their water for one minute and allow it to cool for the following uses: drinking, cooking, baking, washing dishes, making ice cubes, taking medication, brushing teeth, washing food, mixing baby formula, mixing juices or drinks, feeding pets or other consumption,” Veolia stated.
Residents will be notified when the advisory is lifted, according to Veolia. Water does not have to be boiled before showering or washing clothes.
Hoboken schools will open at 9:45 a.m. due to the water issue. No delayed opening was announced for Jersey City schools.
