2025 March Madness, conference tournament scores, automatic bids: High Point wins Big South championship

Image

High Point is dancing its way into the NCAA Tournament for the first time as a Division I member after erasing a 15-point second-half deficit and defeating Winthrop 81-69 Sunday in the Big South Tournament championship game. The Panthers punched their ticket to the Big Dance for the first time after transitioning to Division I in 1999-2000.

Second-year coach Alan Huss led the Panthers to the regular-season Big South title to help them earn the No. 1 seed in the bracket. They defeated Gardner-Webb, Radford and Winthrop in the tourney. High Point will move into the NCAA Tournament bracket riding a 14-game winning streak that dates back to mid-January.

Omaha won’t be playing for the Summit League Tournament title until Sunday, but the Mavericks assured themselves of a spot in the 2025 NCAA Tournament late Saturday night. Omaha’s opponent in the Summit League Tournament final is No. 2 seed St. Thomas, which is in the final year of its four-year transition period from Division III to Division I. Due to NCAA rules, the Tommies won’t be eligible for the NCAA Tournament until next season, thus clearing the path for Omaha to make its first-ever Big Dance appearance regardless of what happens in the tournament title game.

The Missouri Valley Conference Tournament champion will be crowned Sunday when No. 1 seed Drake and No. 2 seed Bradley square off with a spot in the NCAA Tournament on the line. The teams split their regular season series and will be settling the score with a high-stakes showdown on CBS.

Both had to overcome double-digit deficits in the semifinals to reach this point. Drake trailed No. 4 seed Belmont by 12 before roaring back with a 36-20 edge in the second half to beat the Bruins 57-50. Bradley rallied from an 11-point deficit to edge No. 11 seed Valparaiso 70-65.

High Point wins Big South title, seals NCAA tournament berth

Image

JOHNSON CITY, Tenn. — Bobby Pettiford scored 17 points off the bench and High Point rallied from a 15-point second half deficit to defeat Winthrop 81-69 in the Big South Championship title game on Sunday, giving the Panthers their first trip to the NCAA Tournament.

Winthrop led by 10 points at halftime and 48-33 with 15 minutes remaining. Pettiford nailed a 3-pointer and followed it with a layup to start a 14-0 run that got High Point within 48-47. Three and a half minutes later, Trae Benham’s three-point play broke a 52-all tie and High Point led for the first time since it was 14-13.

The Panthers (29-5) led the rest of the way although Winthrop was within 75-69 with a minute to go. However, the Eagles did not score again and the Panthers went 6-for-6 from the free-throw line to close out their first Big South Championship title. High Point has won the Big South regular season title six times.

The Panthers’ 14th straight win was due in large part to 50 points from their bench, 44 in the second half. In addition to Pettiford’s 17 points, Abdoulaye Thiam had 12 points, Benham had eight points and 10 rebounds, and Terry Anderson added eight points. Kezza Giffa, who scored 16 points, was the only starter with more than six points.

Winthrop (23-11) had five players reach double-digits in scoring. Kelton Talford led the Eagles with 15 points, followed by Bryce Baker with 11, Nick Johnson with 11, Kasen Harrison with 10 and K.J. Doucet with 10 points to go with nine rebounds.

NC State is upset by Miami in the final game of the regular season and Kevin Keatts’ last game as coach. (1:56)

Kevin Keatts has been fired as the men’s basketball coach at NC State, the school announced Sunday, making the move less than one year after he led the Wolfpack to the Final Four.

Keatts was at the helm for eight seasons, taking NC State to three NCAA tournaments. He finished his time in Raleigh with an overall record of 151-113, going 69-84 in ACC play.

“I am extremely proud of what we accomplished during my time here,” Keatts said on social media, noting his tenure started with an NCAA investigation from the previous staff. “… As we enter this new era of college sports, I wholeheartedly believe that I am leaving the program in better position to succeed than when I started — and that the basketball program will continue to thrive when supported to the level necessary to compete.”

He concluded his message by saying he was “officially entering the portal.”

Two potential targets for NC State are VCU’s Ryan Odom and McNeese’s Will Wade, sources told ESPN.

The Wolfpack went 12-19 this season, including a 5-15 record in the ACC. They did not qualify for this year’s conference tournament.

“I want to thank Coach Keatts for his contributions to NC State and for always representing the university with class,” athletic director Boo Corrigan said in a statement. “He will always have a treasured place in Wolfpack history for the accomplishments of his 2023-24 squad and I appreciate the passion he brought to this role. We wish him and his family the best in the future.”

Keatts took over in 2017, leading NC State to the NCAA tournament in his first season with the program. The Wolfpack were on the bubble the next two seasons but likely would have sneaked into the 2020 tournament if it had not been canceled due to the COVID-19. They struggled in 2021 and 2022, going 25-36 in those two seasons.

But Keatts turned it around in 2023, guiding NC State back to the NCAA tournament before last season’s historic run through the ACC and NCAA tournaments. The Wolfpack ended the 2023-24 regular season on a four-game losing streak and seemed poised to miss the postseason entirely, but they won five games in five days at the ACC tournament — including victories over Duke and North Carolina — to earn the league’s automatic bid.

As an 11-seed in the NCAA tournament, NC State beat Texas Tech and Oakland, then they upset Marquette and Duke to advance to the program’s first Final Four since 1983.

Keatts’ contract was automatically extended by two seasons due to the run, meaning NC State will owe him around $7 million.
