Happy Gilmore 2 Release Date Reportedly Set for Adam Sandler Movie
The release date for Happy Gilmore 2, the much-anticipated sequel to the 1996 comedy feature Happy Gilmore, has reportedly been set. Notably, Adam Sandler and Christopher McDonald will reprise their respective roles from the first movie in the sequel, which will come out on Netflix.
Deadline mentioned in a February 2025 report about Happy Gilmore 2 cast member Conor Sherry that the movie is slated to premiere on Netflix on July 25, 2025. However, no other major entertainment publication has seemingly reported on this. Netflix Tudum published an article on Happy Gilmore 2 earlier that month, and there was no mention of July 25 as the release date.
Happy Gilmore came out on February 16, 1996, and was a critical and commercial hit. In 2022, conversations about a potential sequel solidified when Sandler, who plays the titular character in the movie series, expressed interest in it. McDonald, who plays Shooter McGavin, disclosed in March 2024 that the sequel was indeed happening, and Sandler had shown him a draft of its script.
The project ultimately found a home at Netflix, which replaced Universal Pictures, the first movie’s U.S. theatrical distributor. The screenwriting duo behind the first movie, Sandler and Tim Herlihy, also penned the script for the sequel. Kyle Newacheck, known for 2018’s Game Over, Man! and 2019’s Murder Mystery, helmed the project. Sandler took to Instagram on his 58th birthday (September 9, 2024) to announce that production for Happy Gilmore 2 had begun. In December, production came to an end.
Previously, Sandler mentioned July 2025 as a tentative release date window for Happy Gilmore 2. Besides Sandler and McDonald, Julie Bowen and Dennis Dugan will also reprise their roles as Virginia Venit and Doug Thompson, respectively, in the sequel. Ben Stiller made an uncredited appearance in the original movie as Hal L. He is also returning for the sequel. Other cast members include Bad Bunny, Eminem, Travis Kelce, and more.

Christopher McDonald believes Travis Kelce’s acting skills may just be as impressive as his football moves.
“I’m gonna give him thumbs up on his acting chops,” McDonald, 70, exclusively told Us Weekly on Saturday, March 1, at GBK, MEND & Bodywell’s Pre-Academy Awards Luxury Lounge, presented by KC Chic Designs. “He was surprisingly good and he’s way too handsome for a football player.”
All jokes aside, the Happy Gilmore actor is thrilled to have Kelce, 35, make a cameo in the highly anticipated sequel that is rumored to be released this July.
“He’s a great guy. I had a lovely time meeting him,” he added of the Kansas City Chiefs tight end. “I’m a fan — although his team keeps beating my Buffalo Bills. Josh Allen? Now that’s a rockstar quarterback right there.”

Although Allen, 28, will not be sharing the big screen with Kelce, the NFL player is gearing up to marry Hailee Steinfeld. While McDonald assured fans that he doesn’t follow his favorite players’ relationships, he can’t help but support Allen’s love story.
“The way they look at each other? Oh my god, that is love right there,” he said at the Beverly Wilshire Hotel. “They’re gonna be just fine, those two. They’re gonna have beautiful kids too, because they’re two beautiful people inside and out. I don’t know her that well, but I just love him, and I hope we have many more years of Josh Allen. MVP, baby.”
While McDonald is excited to see the Bills win big next season, he’s also pumped to have fans experience Happy Gilmore 2. In December 2024, Netflix released the very first sneak peek of the sequel.
Two months later, the streaming service shared a behind-the-scenes clip confirming several golfing stars would make appearances in the upcoming sequel.
“I think there’s a great connection between both films,” McDonald teased. “It’s a good idea to watch the first one because then you’ll follow the storyline, which is deeper and just funnier than you could imagine. I laughed out loud about 15 times during the read-through. It’s so good, and I hope it holds up and people come in droves here. I think they will.”

McDonald is also looking forward to honoring the Happy Gilmore cast who passed away before the sequel is released. In February, news broke that Carl Weathers — who played Chubbs in the original 1996 film — had died at the age of 76.
“We lost a handful of them and it’s tragic, but we send them love in the movie,” McDonald teased. “I can’t talk about it, but you’ll see how we talk about them in the movie. … A lot of different people that aren’t with us anymore, we’re celebrating.”
Happy Gilmore tentatively hits Netflix on Friday, July 25.
