Gervonta “Tank” Davis has knocked out all but two opponents he’s faced en route to becoming one of boxing’s biggest box office attractions.

He’ll look to add another knockout to the list Saturday night when he defends the WBA lightweight title against the WBA 130-pound champion Lamont Roach in Brooklyn.

Roach was granted special permission from the WBA, allowing him to retain his junior lightweight title while moving up in weight to challenge Davis, who defends the title for a second time following his knockout win over Frank Martin last summer.

“Lamont’s got skills. Even at a smaller weight class,” Davis said in December. “He’s one of the guys who I came up with in the sport of boxing and he’s still doing well. He’s definitely a top opponent and everyone will see that on March 1.”

Gervonta Davis (30-0 with 28 knockouts) won the IBF junior lightweight title in his 17th pro fight, scoring a seventh-round TKO win over José Pedraza in 2017. He defended that belt with two knockouts before knocking out Jesús Cuellar in the third round in their 2018 bout to capture the WBA super featherweight title. Then, in 2019, the Baltimore-born fighter moved to lightweight to fight Yuriorkis Gamboa for the vacant WBA (regular) lightweight title. Davis won that contest by TKO in the 12th round. Davis then defeated Leo Santa Cruz in 2020 by sixth-round knockout in a scrap that was for the WBA lightweight and WBA super featherweight belts. In December 2021, following a TKO over Mario Barrios in June 2021, Davis faced Isaac Cruz for the WBA lightweight strap. That contest went 12 rounds, with Davis winning via unanimous decision. Davis is 4-0 since the win over Cruz, beating Rolando Romero, Hector Garcia, Ryan Garcia, and most recently Frank Martin via knockout.

Davis and Roach were initially booked to meet in December at Toyota Center in Houston, Texas, but that fight was postponed and moved to New York in November. Davis had been in talks to face Vasiliy Lomachenko, but that fight never came to fruition.

ESPN has Davis ranked as the No. 8 pound-for-pound boxer. He is the No. 1 ranked 135-pound fighter.

Karma’S Calling? Davis’S Lackluster Promotion Could Pave The Way For Roach’S Upset Victory

BOXING NEWS 24

WBA lightweight champion Gervonta Davis says challenger Lamont Roach is in for a “rude awakening on Saturday night when they meet at the Barclays Center in Brooklyn, New York.

Davis (30-0, 28 KOs) seemed upset today about all the praise that Roach (25-1-1, 10 KOs) is getting from fans and the media. You could tell, as he seemed almost jealous of the attention his opponent had been getting in the buildup for their fight. He showed that by walking out of the media workout without stopping to answer questions from the reporters. Tank’s passive-aggressive behavior has sabotaged the promotion of the event.

It’s understandable why Roach, 29, has received much attention because Davis hasn’t lifted a finger to help promote the fight. Roach has been left to do all the work, drumming up interest in this fight. He’s given countless interviews, whereas Tank has been MIA.

The event will be shown on PBC on Prime Video PPV with a price tag of $79.95. That’s expensive, and that’s why it’s surprising that Tank hasn’t helped out. It’s not like he’s facing someone popular where he can afford to be non-engaged and do minimal promoting. This event needed him because Roach isn’t a household name.

It would serve Tank right if he were to lose the fight to Roach, as it would show that karma is getting back at him for not helping out with the marketing of the fight.

“Roach is in for a rude awakening, for sure. He’s trying to psyche himself up, but it comes down to skill. Whoever is the most skilled fighter will be the winner,” said Tank Davis today at the media workout.

“You’ll see fireworks. I’m sharp, fast and explosive. Lamont is sharp too. It’s going to be a banger, and the fans will be the true winners this Saturday night.”

“I want to stay in the ring more this year, hopefully with three fights. Roach comes first, and then we figure it out the rest of the way,” said Tank.
