Game of Thrones is a global phenomenon and even though the show has been over for years now, the world persists through spinoffs like House of the Dragon.
What about the gaming world though? Well, Game of Thrones has had a few games come out, though none ever managed to approach the success that the name would suggest.
There are, however, many games that can satisfy that low fantasy, sprawling political world itch. We’re going to check out a handful of games that capture the magic of Game of Thrones.
The criteria will be games that involve massive worlds, multiple factions/houses, and overall engaging plots that use misdirection and massive twists to tell the story. We’re also going to be sticking to more modern titles for this list.
While Assassin’s Creed may not jump out as the obvious choice for a Game of Thrones-style game, let me paint the picture for you.
Assassin’s Creed: Valhalla puts you in the shoes of a viking named Eivor seeking allies across the country to unite against the enemy, Alfraed, and his army.
Throughout the game, you will travel to different locales, discovering the nation’s problems and deciding how to help each land to secure more military power. Sounds a little bit like Danaerys Targaryen, doesn’t it?
Not convinced yet? Okay, how about an entire segment dedicated to fighting the Picts, a group who live in a snow-covered land beyond a towering wall? The Picts were the inspiration for the Wildlings. Fun fact.
You’ve also got the looming presence of a much larger threat via mystical nonsense that Assassin’s Creed piles on top, tons of characters, twists and turns, and, overall, it’s a great experience for anyone looking for what Game of Thrones has to offer.
Triangle Strategy is the spiritual successor to Final Fantasy Tactics, which is perhaps the most Game of Thrones-type game out there, but we’re sticking with more modern titles here and Triangle Strategy understands the assignment.
While the surface of the game may look family-friendly, what lies beneath is a complex, political drama with tons of twists and turns, intricate character development, and world-building and focus on the various kingdoms that inhabit the world.
Check out our list of the best games that explore religious themes, including game titles like Dante’s Inferno, Blasphemous, and more.
The gameplay is, of course, in classic tactics fashion, and magic is involved, but the heart of the game is in the incredible writing, the strong characters, and the mature feel that is somewhat hard to find in the genre these days.
Since those are the key cogs to Game of Thrones, Triangle Strategy is a perfect choice.
Mass Effect is one of the most famous franchises of all time and though you might think the space-faring adventure may feel more like Star Wars, it’s far closer to Game of Thrones.
First off, the tone is incredibly mature, as the adults are in the room when it comes to the writing, worlds, and overall vibe of Mass Effect.
You’ve also got your great savior character who is initially doubted by all, only to be seen as the key point of defense against a galactic threat.
Commander Shepard is Jon Snow, right down to the point that he must die and be revived to complete his mission.
There is tons of political drama, with various races detesting each other and each one plays a key part in helping defend the universe from the Reapers.
Speaking of which, the Reapers are the White Walkers of this game world, a threat that is so vast, that it makes all the other squabbles insignificant in the endgame, requiring once hated rivals and fierce enemies to come together to face them for the good of the galaxy.
If that hasn’t convinced you, both have extremely polarizing endings that fans of the series claim ruin the stories completely.
Fire Emblem has always been a series full of political turmoil and mature themes, but it wasn’t till Fire Emblem: Three Houses that you got to fully experience its world from multiple views.
There are essentially three separate games here, as you can play through the main story with one of three houses that changes the narrative structure considerably depending on which you play.
While it starts as one big happy family, quickly, a conflict separates the three houses and causes you to go to war against characters you’d been comrades with previously.
It’s not hard to draw comparisons to Robert’s Rebellion with the way things play out here and that’s not a bad thing.
While things are done with a somewhat cliché, anime flair to them, usually the tone remains serious with plenty of plot twists to keep you interested throughout and the aspect of any character dying at any time adds that extra bit of intrigue that makes you care about the characters that much more.
Final Fantasy 16 takes the series in a decidedly darker direction than what fans are used to and part of this was due to its main inspiration.
Before writing the story of the game, the entire development team was asked to watch season one of Game of Thrones.
That’s a true story and what resulted was the darkest Final Fantasy tale of all time.
From the main character Clive, being a hated “other child” with a pet dog that fights alongside him, to the evil queen who only cares about herself and her family, to the disgraced prince who is accused of regicide….yeah, it’s not exactly subtle about what you’re getting into here.
Luckily, it’s done fantastically with some unreal boss fights, amazing plot twists, and a complex political story that eventually gives weight to a magical enemy threatening to destroy life itself.

While there aren’t many Game of Thrones games worth mentioning, Game of Thrones: A Telltales Games Series is absolutely one of them.
This came out at a time when we were just fresh from the Red Wedding and there was plenty of intrigue left in the story to be told.
What this game does is, instead of putting you in the shoes of the well-known characters, you get to control the other people of Westeros who are being affected by the events of the main plot.
These are the best mainline Final Fantasy games released to date.
It’s a brilliant twist and whether it’s playing as an inquisitive handmaid to Margaery Tyrell or as a young lord of a house under one Ramsay Bolton, you will get tons of that signature Game of Thrones feeling.
The gameplay is also very engaging, with important dialogue choices to make and various ways events can play out depending on your choices.
The biggest issue with the game is the lack of an ending and, sadly, we are likely never going to see how this particular tale ended.
For the full Game of Thrones experience, Mount and Blade 2: Bannerlord is a fantastic choice. You decide how to build your kingdom, whether from scratch or under a lord, and from there, the world is your oyster.
You have full freedom on what troops you want in your army, who you want to betray or befriend, whether you’re going to be part of a larger kingdom or write history in your name. It’s all up to you.
You are essentially creating your own story here and it can go countless different ways. This is a blank slate medieval world waiting for you to make your mark on it.
If that’s not enough, some mods convert the entire game to Westeros, including dragons, White Walkers, and lifelike recreations of characters from the show.
Dragon’s Dogma 2 has more than a few allusions to Game of Thrones. A vengeful queen with an innocent son, kings laying false claims to thrones, and dragons that threaten to destroy everything. It’s all there.
The story itself isn’t too enthralling, but there is a lot of lore and interesting side quests to check out that help flesh out the world.
In terms of fast-paced, dragon-slaying action though, no game will give you the feeling of those big-budget fights from the show, like Dragon’s Dogma 2.
The story does take some interesting twists too, and most of the characters you meet are expendable, leading to a feeling of uncertainty whenever a dangerous event happens, as you have no way of knowing who will survive.
Dragon Age is a series that might resemble Lord of the Rings at first glance, but as you get deeper, you realize this is very much inspired by Game of Thrones.
The way everything is set up, you can find parallels very quickly. The Darkspawn? The deadly force that the nobles all ignore as a true threat when it’s clear they are the end-game enemy? White Walkers.
Who is in charge of fighting the Darkspawn? The Grey Wardens, and when they enter their pact, there is no turning back. Well, that sounds like The Night’s Watch to me, and It’s not even all that subtle.
When Dragon Age: Origins was released, Game of Thrones had yet to take over the world and because of that, it was a breath of fresh air. While it hasn’t aged great in certain aspects, the mature story, great characters, and twisting narrative will be perfect for any Game of Thrones fan.
If you like the brutality and grittiness of the world of Game of Thrones, no game does it better than Kingdom Come: Deliverance 2, and the first game does it pretty well too.
If you ever wondered what the life of the less royal members of the Westerosi world looked like, Henry is a great example of that person.
He is very much the victim of the big, political plays for power that populate a world like Westeros and here, we get to see what happens when one of the peasants of the world decides to fight back.
You’ll be working jobs, having to smith your weapons, find beds to sleep in, fight in wars, and all in all, live a true medieval life in so many ways.
There is also tons of political drama, backstabbing, weddings that go horribly wrong, and all kinds of exciting events popping up.
The writing is perhaps Kingdom Come: Deliverance 2’s greatest asset, as the repartee between characters and the countless unique characters help bring this game world to life in a way that few others have achieved.

Everyone’s played at least one Final Fantasy, but in this list, we are only considering the deep cuts!
Take those zones. Victory demands it.
It’s hard to pull off a plot twist, but there’s nothing better than being caught completely off guard by one and watching the story change.
These JRPGs can still teach a thing or two to their modern counterparts.

HBO confirms another ‘promising’ Game of Thrones spin-off is in the works
‘We can’t really guarantee what’s going to go forward’ said an executive
HBO has confirmed it is developing another Game of Thrones spin-off series following the success of House of the Dragon.
Season two of House of the Dragon ended in August and despite leaving fans and critics disappointed with its low-key finale, season three is already in production.
A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms, another spin-off is set to be released in late 2025. The series is based on George RR Martin’s novella The Hedge Knight and stars Peter Claffey as Ser Duncan “Dunk” the Tal. The book is the first in the Dunk and Egg series, with subsequent novellas The Sworn Sword and The Mystery Knight also set to be adapted for following seasons.
HBO is clearly happy to keep diving back into the Game of Thrones well as the network’s Head of Drama Series and Films, Francesca Orsi, has revealed that another series is in the works.
Speaking to Deadline, Orsi said: “We have other spinoffs that we’re working on right now, one of which – which I won’t get into – is very promising, and it is still the Targaryen line.”
She added: “There’s a number of other spinoffs, we can’t really guarantee what’s going to go forward, but we are very big budget on the other ones. I would say this [A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms] is the most intimate one.”
House Targaryen was at the centre of House of the Dragon where the family had united the Seven Kingdoms of Westeros under one ruler.
Game of Thrones creator George RR Martin has been vocal about his criticism of House of the Dragon claiming that changes made to the storyline from his original books served to “weaken” the show. The author added that there could be “larger and more toxic” changes planned for seasons three and four of the fantasy show.
Martin, though, has praised A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms having already watched all six episodes.
In a blog post, the 76-year-old wrote: “Ira [Parker, showrunner] and his team wrapped the first season months ago, and moved right on to post-production,” the author wrote.
“I’ve seen all six episodes now (the last two in rough cuts, admittedly), and I loved them. Dunk and Egg have always been favourites of mine, and the actors we found to portray them are just incredible.
“The rest of the cast are terrific as well. Wait until you guys meet the Laughing Storm. and Tanselle Too-Tall.”

The next Game of Thrones prequel series gets a very promising update from HBO.
Per Deadline, HBO Head of Drama Series and Films Francesca Orsi noted that original series creator and author George R. R. Martin had already sung high praises for the soon-to-be released Game of Thrones prequel series, A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms. “He loves it,” Orsi said, before going on to offer praises of her own for the series’ leading duo of Peter Claffey and Dexter Sol Ansell.
Mortal Kombat’s Lewis Tan gives a pointed response to an AI generated “hype trailer” posted to social media.
“You’re going to be so impressed by Peter Claffey and Dexter Sol Ansell as Dunk and Egg, the two leads, the sort of brotherhood, the paternal nature between Dunk and this young man,” Orsi said. “So much so that we’re already planning on how do we build this for the three seasons in total. We’re not picking it up officially, but it’s looking very good. We’re looking at it as a holistic piece, Seasons 2 and 3, because there’s three novellas.”
We’re not picking it up officially, but it’s looking very good.
Orsi also noted that the series has been left relatively open-ended due to Martin’s past indications that he might return to the world of The Tales of Dunk and Egg. “The role of Egg only spans not even a year, so you have to roll into it season to season pretty quickly, because this little kid will grow up too quickly if we wait too long. So we’re thinking about that in terms of pickups.”
The Hunger Games’ Francis Lawrence explains the inherent difficulties of developing the next prequel film while waiting for the novel to release.
Based on Martin’s Tales of Dunk and Egg novella trilogy that began with 1998’s The Hedge Knight, HBO’s upcoming A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms series will follow Claffey’s Ser Duncan the Tall, or Dunk, as he embarks upon an epic adventure alongside Ansell’s young Aegon Targaryen, or Egg. Per the official synopsis for the series, A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms is set “a century before GOT,” in a time when “Ser Duncan the Tall, and his squire, Egg wandered through Westeros, while the Targaryen dynasty ruled the Iron Throne and dragons were still remembered, great destinies and enemies await the incomparable friends.”
A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms will be the second prequel spinoff of HBO’s Game of Thrones following the fan-favorite House of the Dragon, which is currently going into production on its third season. While A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms takes viewers back about a century prior to the events of the original series, House of the Dragon takes things back another hundred years. The series features and ensemble cast including Paddy Considine as King Viserys I Targaryen, Matt Smith as Prince/King Consort Daemon Targaryen, Emma D’Arcy as Princess/Queen Rhaenyra Targaryen, Rhys Ifans as Set Otto Hightower, Steve Toussaint as Lord Corlys Velaryon, Sonoya Mizuno as Mysaria, and Oliva Cooke as Dowager Queen Alicent Hightower. Following its release in 2022, House of the Dragon was met with largely favorable reviews from critics and audience alike, securing production of further seasons of the series.
A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms is expected to debut on HBO and Max in late 2025.
