Joel Farabee and Morgan Frost return to Philly after trade with mixed emotions: ‘I think it will be a little weird’

Image

The Flyers traded the homegrown Farabee and Frost on Jan. 31 for Andrei Kuzmenko, Jakob Pelletier, and two draft picks.

The Calgary Flames (28-23-9) have had a rough road trip, losing some tough contests to some elite opponents. Tonight, they face the Philadelphia Flyers, a team that ranks below them within their respective divisions and the overall standings.

It’s been several months since these two clubs met, as the Flyers visited the Saddledome on Oct. 12, the Flames’ second game of the season. Calgary started the season on a four-game win streak, which included a 6-3 victory over Philadelphia.

Somehow, the Flames find themselves in the last playoff spot despite going 3-5-1 in their last ten contests, getting outscored 29-18, and scoring just one goal in their past three games.

Meanwhile, the Flyers, who are also fighting for their own playoff spot, are just 4-4-2 in their last ten contests, with a goal differential of just minus-3 at 29-27. Interestingly, Philadelphia is 3-for-20 on the power-play, while opponents are also 3-for-20 during this stretch.

Calgary starter – Dustin Wolf

Season: 36 GP / 20-12-4 / 2.58 GAA / .913 SV%

Career: 54 GP / 28-19-5 / 2.72 GAA / .908 SV%

Last 5: 1-2-2 / 2.60 GAA / .910 SV%

vs. Opponent: 1-0-0 / 2.00 GAA / .933 SV%

Philadelphia starter – Samuel Ersson

Season: 34 GP / 18-10-4 / 2.82 GAA / .893 SV%

Career: 97 GP / 47-32-11 / 2.85 GAA / .893 SV%

Last 5: 3-0-2 / 2.80 GAA / .901 SV%

vs. Opponent: 1-0-0 / 3.05 GAA / .925 SV%

– Tuesday will mark the first time Jakob Pelletier will face the Flames, the team that drafted him 26th overall at the 2019 Draft. Moreover, it’s the first time Joel Farabee and Morgan Frost will face the Flyers, who drafted each of them in the first round. Emotions will be overflowing.

– The Flames have one goal in the last ten periods and now have the lowest GF/GP in the NHL. Days ahead of the trade deadline, what kind of performance does this team have left in the tank during the second to last game of the lengthy road trip?

– Calgary controls their playoff destiny with 22 games left, the same amount as the Vancouver Canucks. However, two other teams are in the wild card race. Can the Flames take care of business against a team below them in the standings?

Flames vs Flyers Prediction, Picks & Odds for Tonight’s NHL Game

Image

Although Matt Coronato has gone quiet on the scoresheet recently for Calgary, the young winger offers sneaky value to make his mark in Philly.

This article contains predictions for an old game!

The Calgary Flames’ offense has let them down coming out of the 4 Nations break, scoring just seven goals over five games.

Now set to play the Philadelphia Flyers, I expect the road team to put forth a better offensive showing this time around, with Matt Coronato playing a key role in my Flames vs. Flyers predictions.

Let’s dive deeper with my NHL picks for March 4.

My Flames pick
Matt Coronato Over 0.5 points (+115 at BET99)

My Flames analysis
Matt Coronato has just one point over his last six games, but it’s not for a lack of opportunity. Coronato has generated 27 shot attempts and 16 scoring chances, slotting him behind only Nazem Kadri amongst Calgary Flames forwards.

The Flames have found the back of the net during Coronato’s minutes as well. They’ve scored five goals with Coronato on the ice over the last six games, and he’s somehow only factored into one of them.

There can be noise over small samples, but Coronato’s individual points percentage on the season is 59.62%, meaning he factors into just under 60% of the goals he’s on the ice for. His IPP during this rut sits at 20%.

What’s important is the Flames are creating when he’s on the ice, and plenty of the chances are coming off of his stick. So long as that continues, the points should follow.

While the Philadelphia Flyers are a strong defensive team in terms of limiting shots, the same can’t be said of goals. They have allowed the 7th most goals per game this season.

Although Samuel Ersson has performed better in goal of late, he still owns a .894 SV% on the year and an .893 mark through nearly 100 career games. He is not a goaltender to avoid targeting.

This is a nice spot to buy low on a quality offensive player who is due for a little puck luck.

Matt Coronato Over 0.5 points

Matvei Michkov Over 0.5 points

Flames +1.5

Matvei Michkov is a very streaky player. When he’s hot, he’s hot, and he’s cooking right now. The dynamic rookie has produced 10 points over his past six games, putting forth four multi-point performances along the way.

Michkov is not used to the rigors of an NHL season and the grind that comes from playing so many games. His high while playing professionally in the KHL was 47 games — a number he’s already blown past. The extra rest is important for Michkov, as the Russian winger has hit the scoresheet in eight of 11 games following two days off.

With Dustin Wolf between the pipes, I love Calgary’s chances of keeping this game tight. He owns terrific numbers on the season and rarely gets blown up, allowing for the Flames to hang around almost every night.

The Flames should be able to provide him some run support against Ersson, giving the Flames great odds of keeping this one within a score.
