Christopher Nolan’s 2006 thriller, The Prestige, is set to land on a new streaming service in March.
Nolan’s 2006 film, The Prestige, will drop on Hulu on March 14. The thriller, which unites Christian Bale and Hugh Jackman, follows two stage magicians in 1890s London, who develop an intense rivalry with one another. Obsessed with outdoing the other, the rivalry inevitably grows out of control, leading to dire consequences. Jackman and Bale lead the stacked cast, which also includes the talents of Nolan movie regular Michael Caine, Scarlett Johansson, Rebecca Hall, Piper Perabo, Samantha Mahurin, Andy Serkis, and the legendary David Bowie as Nikola Tesla. Nolan co-wrote the script alongside his brother, Jonathan, who would serve as a writer on several of his other movies.
One of the most popular modern horror genre stars joins her biggest project yet.
While The Prestige was well-reviewed at the time and certainly has a case for being one of the director’s best movies, it interestingly ranks as one of Nolan’s lowest-grossing films ever, only beating out his time-bending feature Memento and his debut film, Following. His subsequent film, The Dark Knight, would send the director into the box office stratosphere, establishing him as Hollywood’s new big event filmmaker. However, The Prestige still stands as one of his best, featuring a climactic twist that will surely delight first-time viewers on Hulu. The film is also available to rent or purchase on VOD platforms such as Fandango at Home, Prime Video, and Apple TV.
Fresh off the monster success of his Oscar-winning film and box office juggernaut, Oppenheimer, the director is set to tackle Homer’s epic poem, The Odyssey, for his next film. For weeks following Universal’s announcement that Nolan was adapting The Odyssey, many speculated as to who would portray Odysseus in the star-studded film. Well, it was recently revealed that Matt Damon, who previously worked with Nolan on Oppenheimer, will star as the iconic hero.
Matt Damon and Christopher Nolan reunite in The Odyssey.
In addition to Damon, The Odyssey boasts an incredible ensemble featuring Tom Holland (Spider-Man: No Way Home), Zendaya (Challengers), Anne Hathaway (The Dark Knight Rises), Lupita Nyong’o (Black Panther), Robert Pattinson (The Batman), Benny Safdie (Oppenheimer), Charlize Theron (Mad Max: Fury Road), Jon Bernthal (Baby Driver), John Leguizamo (John Wick), Elliot Page (Juno), Bill Irwin (Interstellar), Samantha Morton (The Whale), Corey Hawkins (Straight Outta Compton), Mia Goth (MaXXXine), and Himesh Patel (Tenet). The Odyssey hits theaters on July 16, 2026.
The Prestige lands on Hulu on March 14.

The director who was wary of working with Christian Bale: “You hear stories about actors who are method-y”
Method actors have a bad reputation among their co-stars for being impossible to work with. The ‘method’ technique goes in and out of vogue in film and theatre. However, there are a number of actors committed to staying in character under all circumstances, rain or shine, sickness or health, and having colleagues and friends. Christian Bale is one of the more extreme examples, well documented for putting on and losing weight at what seems like an impossible clip.
And he’s occupied the news cycle with several scandals regarding the intensity baked into the method process. If you believe in the ‘method’ school–or even if you don’t–it’s served Bale well. From the age of 12 in Empire of the Sun, he’s been lauded in most of the films he appeared in. Well, most of them.
But the one residing in infamy, the one which lives most enduringly in public memory would probably be his meltdown on the set of 2006’s Terminator Salvation where he prosecuted a violent tirade of verbal abuse against cinematographer Shane Hurlbut. Bale is an actor with so many flowers that he could wear a boutonniere on his lapel for every day of his life, so it was quite shocking to many people.
Taika Waititi, director of 2023’s Thor: Blood and Thunder, didn’t share these concerns. In an interview with Rolling Stone, he was asked, “My sense is that Christian Bale, who plays your villain, is a very, very serious person. How did your personalities intersect on set?” and replied that Bale was a “sweetheart”, although expressing nerves about having a method actor on set.
“I, too, thought that Christian was going to be like a very … you hear stories about actors who are Method-y, and they really take it seriously.” Waititi said, who up until this point was mostly known for doing smaller indie comedy films not robust with a Marvel calibre budget. “And I am just used to working with my friends where we have a very casual way of working together, we give each other a lot of shit and it’s like being with the family.”
Waititi concluded, “So I would say that I was a little anxious to work with Christian and Russell Crowe. But I’d say out of all of the actors, those were the two biggest sweethearts I’ve ever worked with. No problems, no ego.” However, he seems to have warm relationships with all his actors, saying, “Chris Hemsworth has basically got it all” regarding his role as Thor and that Hemsworth was “annoyingly good at acting”.
Thor: Love and Thunder got mixed reviews and fan reception, not quite reaching the heights of Thor: Ragnarok, but one of the consistently positive appraisals was of Christian Bale’s performance as ‘Gorr the God Butcher’, villain of the story who aims to relieve the Pagan Gods that populate the film from their heads, their internal organs and the like. Chris Hemsworth’s titular character wasn’t so well received, but he can enjoy Waititi saying that Hemsworth is “a great surfer”.

“I’m not a method actor”: who exactly is Christian Bale trying to kid?
Method acting has divided movie fans, critics, and actors for years, with the question of how necessary and ethical it is still standing. If an actor has to use method acting to truly get into the mind of the character, are they as talented as one who doesn’t? It’s not as black and white as this, however, with some actors using method acting lightly – perhaps undergoing short exercises in character off-set or temporarily speaking in the accent required for their role – while others take it to the extreme.
Daniel-Day Lewis is well known for his method acting, like when he made crew members carry him and feed him while he was playing a man with cerebral palsy in My Left Foot. Some people find this technique impressive – but really, it’s not hard to see why many people just think it equates to acting like a bit of a dick. Should we respect someone’s ultimate dedication to their art, or should the actor have the decency to not make other people’s jobs considerably more difficult?
While many actors admit to method acting to prepare them for their roles, Christian Bale claims that he is “not a method actor”. Yet, we’re not convinced. The actor was once asked by Movie Fone about the ways he gets into character, to which Bale replied, “I don’t know what I do. I don’t have any particular way of doing it. I make it up each time with every job.”
He continued, “I begin each job going, ‘Oh my God, someone hired me again.’ I don’t even know what I’m doing. I never really trained, so I don’t really have a particular technique. People often say, ‘Oh, Bale, he’s a method actor.’ I’m not a method actor. I would’ve had to train to do that. I just do whatever is necessary for each and every day.”
Sure, Bale might not method act for every performance, but he has certainly opted for the technique on various occasions. In an interview with Vanity Fair, Bale’s American Psycho co-star Chloë Sevigny revealed that she found his process of embodying the cold-hearted yuppie killer Patrick Bateman “challenging,” explaining, “I wanted a little more generosity to make myself feel more at ease, which is my own ego. It was a really challenging dynamic for me, but I don’t think that I thought he was bad. I was just kind of confused, like, ‘Why aren’t you being social?’”
Additionally, when it came to The Machinist, Bale dropped 63 pounds, while he put on 40 pounds for Vice, which left him practically unrecognisable. In 2005, he appeared in Harsh Times, which made the director, David Ayer, slightly scared by his method acting. He claimed, “He was basically in character the whole shoot. I know he took it home with him, and it didn’t make the wife too happy.”
He added, “The final shot, we wrap and, all of a sudden, it’s Christian Bale again. I realised the guy I thought I was hanging out with for the past month-plus didn’t exist. It was really weird, shocking, amazing, frightening… But I think that’s his gift.”
So, clearly, Bale does use method acting, and it’s unclear why he won’t admit to it. Perhaps it’s because he only resorts to it when he feels it is “necessary” that Bale doesn’t believe he is a method actor, per se. It’s time he admits that he isn’t against the technique, as controversial as it can be, because, judging by his acclaimed performances, it works well for him.
