Azmatullah Omarzai lit up the latter stages of Afghanistan’s innings with a much-needed 67 (63).

However, plenty of credit has to go to Sediqullah Atal, who found himself coming out to bat in the opening over and anchored his side’s innings with 85 off 95. Here are the best shots from his knock.

I love watching Afghanistan. They play with their hearts but more importantly their heads (England take note).

Australia bowler Adam Zampa: “A mixed bag tonight. I struggled to find my length at times but I created some chances through the middle, which is my job.

“[We need to] protect our stumps. These guys love bowling stump to stump, particularly Rashid [Khan]. Protect the stumps and play it straight.

“We’re happy with that score. They’ve put us under pressure before, particularly at the 2023 World Cup. We’ve had some great battles.”

Thanks Ffion.

Afghanistan have put a tricky total on the board and once again, they really prospered at the death. They scored 74 runs off the final 10 overs after scoring 145 off the previous 30.

Australia will have to be sensible.

It was a fine all-round bowling performance from Australia on a good batting pitch, with Ben Dwarshius taking 3-47 and two wickets apiece for Adam Zampa and Spencer Johnson.

They will need 274 for a place in the Champions Trophy semi-final.

To recap the innings and take you through the first 25 overs of the chase, here is Elizabeth Botcherby.

Noor c Inglis b Dwarshius 6 (Afg 273)

Noor Ahmad is caught behind off the final ball, and Afghanistan are all out for 273.

Thanks to Sediqullah Atal’s 85 and 67 from Azmatullah Omarzai, Afghanistan have something for their bowlers to work with.

Azmatullah Omarzai, what a fantastic knock. Very well played.

Azmatullah c Carey b Dwarshius 67 (Afg 272-9)

Ah.

A battling innings comes to an end as Azmatullah Omarzai tries to find the boundary, but picks out a diving Alex Carey at deep cover with two only two balls left in the innings.

And then turns down the single.

Boundaries needed.

One-bounce four down the ground!

What an innings this is from Azmatullah. He moves to 67 from 61 balls.

Another!

Azmatullah goes over long-off this time, reading Nathan Ellis’ slower ball perfectly.

14 off the over.

Michael Carberry
Former England batter on BBC Radio 5 Sports Extra

Again, it is very confusing with these quick bowlers.

Surely, the field is set for the fuller delivery – why would you bowl a slow one?

Very odd thinking. I can’t imagine that’s the plan.

Huge!

Nathan Ellis spends an age debating how to set his field with his captain, which proves completely pointless because he bangs it in short and Azmatullah launches it into the stands!

Afg 254-8

Azmatullah is giving Afghanistan a chance.

He brings up his half-century from 54 balls, but gives little celebration as he knows that he has got two very important overs to negotiate yet.

10 off the over, and Azmatullah keeps the strike.

Nicely done.

Michael Carberry
Former England batter on BBC Radio 5 Sports Extra

Wow.

That made a beautiful sound off the bat. A great swing of the bat from Azmatullah Omarzai.

Over the rope she goes!

And that is why!

A baseball-like club straight down the ground from Nathan Ellis’ first ball.

More of that, please.

Eight off the over, but the big wicket of Rashid Khan.

Azmatullah Omarzai has 39 and he is Afghanistan’s last hope now.

Michael Carberry
Former England batter on BBC Radio 5 Sports Extra

Seems to be the run of things for Afghanistan today.

Just getting carried away, Rashid Khan. Still a lot of time left, if someone like him stays in, then they can do a lot of damage.

Very disappointing. These are the wickets that peg you back.

Rashid c Maxwell b Dwarshius 19 (Afg 235-8)

That’s the end of Rashid Khan’s cameo.

He slashed the previous ball for four, but Ben Dwarshius gets his revenge as Rashid slices a top edge straight up in the air and Glenn Maxwell makes no mistake running in from long-on.

‘Backing From Higher Authorities’: Ex-Pakistan Star’s ‘Champions Trophy 2025 Selection’ Bombshell

Image

Pakistan had a horrible outing in the Champions Trophy 2025 as the Mohammad Rizwan-led side was eliminated without a single win. They lost their first two matches against India and New Zealand while their last game against Bangladesh was washed out. The Pakistan cricketers faced a lot of criticism for their lack of form – both from experts as well as fans. Former Pakistan fast bowler feels that Pakistan’s team selection was ‘unbalanced’ to begin with and even alleged that some of the players picked from the competition was there due to ‘backing from higher authorities’.
