TUCSON, Ariz. — — Henri Veesaar scored 22 points, Caleb Love added 21 and No. 24 Arizona pulled away for a 113-100 win over rival Arizona State on Tuesday night.
The Wildcats (20-10, 14-5 Big 12) won the first meeting this season in a game that got so testy at the end Arizona State coach Bobby Hurley pulled his players off the floor before the handshake line.
The rematch had far less animosity, and the scrappy Sun Devils (13-17, 4-15) managed to keep it close late despite being down to five scholarship players after starting guard Adam Miller was injured in the first 28 seconds.
Arizona wore down the Sun Devils, shooting 59% with a 52-30 advantage in the paint to earn a bye into the quarterfinals of the Big 12 Tournament. KJ Lewis added 21 points.
Alston Mason led Arizona State with 33 points.
Arizona had a hard time shaking the Sun Devils until Basheer Jihad (15 points) and Shawn Phillips (14) fouled out in the final 5:12, leaving Arizona State with four scholarship players. The Wildcats pulled away after Arizona State had cut the lead to three.

About the matchup: This will be the second meeting of the season between the rivals. Arizona prevailed 81-72 in Tempe a month ago. Caleb Love had 27 points in that game while the since-dismissed B.J. Freeman had a team-high 19 for ASU. The Sun Devils were close until late with Arizona only leading by three at 68-65 with 4:15 left. ASU’s lone hope of advancing to the postseason is winning the conference tournament, which begins in one week in Kansas City. Arizona is currently projected as a 4 seed by most.
About the Sun Devils: Decimated by injuries and illnesses, ASU has lost eight of its last nine games. Freshman Jayden Quaintance (9.4 ppg, 7.4 rpg) has missed five games, Joson Sanon (11.4 ppg) five games, Adam Miller (10.2 ppg) two games, Shawn Phillips two games and Alston Mason one game. Quaintance (knee) and Miller (hip) missed Saturday’s loss at Utah. That leaves Basheer Jihad (12 ppg) as the only Sun Devil who has played in every contest. Sanon is coming off a career-high 28 points in a loss at Utah.

About the Wildcats: Arizona was within a game of first place Houston but has lost four of its last six outings, the most recent being an 84-67 setback at No. 10 Iowa State. The Wildcats are tied for second in the Big 12 with Texas Tech, four games behind Houston. Love (16.2 ppg) and junior guard Jaden Bradley (11.6 ppg) lead the effort. In the first meeting between the teams, 7-foot sophomore forward Henri Veesaar came up big and he should be even more impactful in this game with Quaintance likely out.
