Hey, folks! Today’s NYT Strands hints, spangram and answers for Friday, March 7 are coming right up.
The New York Times’ Strands puzzle is a play on the classic word search. It’s available on the NYT website and in the NYT Games app alongside the likes of Wordle and Connections (which we also cover in daily guides at Forbes Gaming).
There’s a new game of Strands to play every day. The game will present you with a six by eight grid of letters. The aim is to find a group of words that have something in common, and you’ll get a clue as to what that theme is. When you find a theme word, it will remain highlighted in blue.
You’ll also need to find a special word called a spangram. This tells you what the words have in common. The spangram links at least two sides of the board, but it may not start or end there. While the theme words will not be a proper name, the spangram can be a proper name. When you find the spangram, it will remain highlighted in yellow.
Every letter is used once in one of the theme words and spangram. You can connect letters vertically, horizontally and diagonally, and it’s possible to switch directions in the middle of a word. If you’re playing on a touchscreen, double tap the last letter to submit your guess.
If you find three valid words of at least four letters that are not part of the theme, you’ll unlock the Hint button. Clicking this will highlight the letters that make up one of the theme words.

Be warned: You’ll need to be on your toes. Sometimes you’ll need to fill the missing word(s) in a phrase. On other days, the game may revolve around synonyms or homophones. The difficulty will vary from day to day, and the puzzle creators will try to surprise you sometimes.

My first thought, based on the theme hint, was that the grid would have something to do with either a cruise liner (as in its decks) or a backyard. But after spotting POKER — which I thought would just be a hint word — in the bottom left, the theme became immediately clear. I quickly spotted the spangram right next to that word.
I have to admit, I needed a couple of hints for this one. I’m completely unfamiliar with PINOCHLE, CANASTA and EUCHRE. But hey, I got there in the end.
I used two hints and the spangram was the second theme word I found.
That’s it from me for Strands coverage for the time being. See you in a couple of weeks!

Your goal is to find hidden words that fit the puzzle’s theme. If you’re stuck, find any words you can. Every time you find three words of four letters or more, Strands will reveal one of the theme words. These are the words I used to get those hints, but any words of four or more letters that you find will work:
These are the answers that tie into the theme. The goal of the puzzle is to find them all, including the spangram, a theme word that reaches from one side of the puzzle to the other. When you’ve got all of them (I originally thought there were always eight but learned that the number can vary), every letter on the board will be used. Here are the nonspangram answers:

Hi Strands fans. I found today’s puzzle rather tricky. Not only did I have to use a clue to get started, but even when I knew what the theme meant, I’d never heard of half the games involved, meaning a lot of tedious trial and error.
That clue revealed POKER in the bottom-left corner, which was pretty explicit about what the theme of “All decked out” meant (if it were EUCHRE or PINOCHLE, I wouldn’t have had a clue). As such, I was able to divide the board in two with the spangram of CARDGAMES.
I then picked off the ones I’d heard of, even if I’d never actually played them. CRIBBAGE was in the top-right corner, with RUMMY directly below it. I then experimented with the remaining letters in the bottom-right corner until I came up with EUCHRE.
I next found CANASTA on the left-hand side, which just left the anagram of HCOLNEIP to decode. I’d never heard of PINOCHLE, but by joining random letters until something worked, I got there in the end.
