Snacks Recalled in 35 States as FDA Issues Warning

Image

A Chicago-based food company has issued a voluntary recall for a range of snacks across 35 states.

ZB Importing LLC issued the recall on February 18 for six varieties of Ülker snack rolls, biscuits and wafers due to undeclared wheat, eggs and milk.

Newsweek has contacted ZB Importing LLC for comment.

People who have an allergy or severe sensitivity to wheat, eggs or milk run the risk of a serious or life-threatening allergic reaction if they consume these products.

Wheat, eggs and milk are among the nine major food allergens as defined in U.S. law, according to the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA).

“Food allergic reactions vary in severity from mild symptoms involving hives and lip swelling to severe, life-threatening symptoms, often called anaphylaxis, that may involve fatal respiratory problems and shock,” the FDA said.

The products have been recalled as the allergens were not declared on the ingredients lists or contains statements. The mislabeling was discovered after a complaint from a consumer who suffered an allergic reaction.

The products were distributed in Alabama, Arkansas, California, Connecticut, Colorado, District of Columbia, Delaware, Florida, Georgia, Illinois, Indiana, Kentucky, Louisiana, Massachusetts, Maryland, Michigan, Minnesota, Missouri, Mississippi, Nebraska, North Carolina, New Hampshire, New Jersey, New Mexico, New York, Ohio, Oklahoma, Pennsylvania, Rhode Island, South Carolina, Tennessee, Texas, Virginia, Washington, Wisconsin and West Virginia. The snacks were also distributed in Ontario, Canada.

ZB Importing LLC said: “The issue originated from a supplier who inadvertently failed to fully disclose all allergens while translating the ingredient list. We are actively working with the supplier to implement stricter labeling controls, including an additional verification process for multilingual labels.

“Consumers who have purchased any of the below Ulker Brand products are urged to return them to the place of purchase for a full refund. Consumers with questions may contact the company.”

Snacks sold nationwide recalled for life-threatening allergen: Return ASAP

Image

Popular sweets sold under the Ülker Brand are being recalled for an undeclared allergen that can result in serious or life-threatening reactions to those who have severe sensitivity to the ingredients.

Six varieties of Ülker Brand snack rolls, biscuits and wafers are included in the recall for containing undeclared wheat, egg and/or milk in the products’ ingredient lists.

“People who have an allergy or severe sensitivity to wheat, egg, or milk run the risk of a serious or life-threatening allergic reaction if they consume these products,” the company said in a statement.

Products were sold across 37 states including Connecticut, Massachusetts and New Hampshire.

The recall was initiated after a consumer complained of an allergic reaction related to consuming one of the products.

“The issue originated from a supplier who inadvertently failed to fully disclose all allergens while translating the ingredient list,” the company said.

“We are actively working with the supplier to implement stricter labeling controls, including an additional verification process for multilingual labels.”

Customers who have purchased any of the products included in the recall are advised to return them to its place of purchase for a full refund.

Snacks distributed in Michigan part of multi-state recall. What the FDA is saying

Snack foods distributed to Michigan and numerous other states are being recalled because of underclared allergens, federal officials announced this week.

“ZB Importing LLC is voluntarily recalling certain lots of six varieties of Ulker Brand snack rolls, biscuits, and wafers due to undeclared wheat, egg and/or milk in the Ingredient List and/or Contains Statement on the product labels,” ZB Importing LLC said in a release.

People who have an allergy or severe sensitivity to wheat, egg or milk could suffer serious or life-threatening allergic reactions if they consume the products, the company said on Feb. 18.

The mislabeling was brought to the company’s attention after a single consumer had an allergic reaction, ZB Importing said.

“We are actively working with the supplier to implement stricter labeling controls, including an additional verification process for multilingual labels,” the company said in a release.

Here’s what to know:

Milk, egg and wheat were mislabeled in the “contains” statement written on the products’ packaging.
