BRYAN-COLLEGE STATION, Texas – Having won four of its past five games, the sixth-ranked Tennessee men’s basketball team hits the road for its fourth top-10 bout of the season, as it faces No. 7 Texas A&M Saturday at Reed Arena. Tipoff is slated for noon ET.

THE MATCHUP
• After they were unranked for the first 11 series meetings, this is the ninth time in the last 10 the Volunteers are ranked. They were 6-2 in the prior eight.
• This is the third time Tennessee is facing a ranked Texas A&M team, including its first time playing a top-20 Aggies side. Just one prior series meeting, a 68-63 road defeat on 2/21/23, featured both teams in the AP top 25, but neither were in the top 10.
• UT’s 86-51 home win over Texas A&M on 2/24/24 in the most recent meeting between the two sides was the largest margin of victory either way in series history.
• Rick Barnes’ 43 matchups with Texas A&M are his most versus any foe. His 32 wins over the Aggies are his second-most, trailing just his 33 against Texas Tech.
• Coming off a 21-15 (9-9) campaign in 2023-24 that included an NCAA Round of 32 bid, the Aggies were fifth in the SEC preseason poll.
• Senior guard Wade Taylor IV, a Preseason First Team All-SEC pick, leads Texas A&M with 14.9 ppg and 4.5 apg.

Here’s a recent AP story on college basketball:

Auburn’s win at Alabama assured the Tigers would keep the No. 1 ranking in The Associated Press Top 25 men’s college basketball poll for a sixth consecutive week.

The Tigers (23-2) received 59 of 60 first-place votes in Monday’s poll, reclaiming nearly all the support lost when they fell at home to Florida on Feb. 8. Auburn had been the unanimous No. 1 for three straight weeks before that loss, but remained at the top last week despite seeing nearly half of those first-place votes go primarily to Alabama, with a few to Florida and Tennessee.

But the Tigers won Saturday in a 1-vs.-2 road matchup against the rival Crimson Tide, hours after the committee that will choose the 68-team field for the NCAA Tournament put Auburn as its No. 1 overall seed in its preliminary rankings.

The two teams to beat the Tigers sit right behind them. Florida and Duke were tied for third last week, and the Gators inched past the Blue Devils to break that tie and take the No. 2 spot while claiming the remaining first-place vote.

Alabama fell to No. 4, followed by Houston, Tennessee, Texas A&M — with its highest ranking since December 2017 — Iowa State, Texas Tech and St. John’s to round out the top 10.

Of that group, the Red Raiders represented the only change from last week’s set of teams, climbing three spots to replace Purdue for their first top-10 appearance in three years. Grant McCasland’s squad, which has lost just twice since the start of 2025, was unranked until cracking the poll at No. 22 on Jan. 27.

Michigan had the week’s biggest jump among ranked teams, climbing eight spots to No. 12 after beating Purdue last week and pushing its win streak to six games.

No. 15 Missouri jumped six spots, while No. 11 Wisconsin, No. 18 Clemson and No. 20 Maryland each rose five spots.

In all, 12 teams moved up from their position last week.

Memphis took the biggest tumble of the week, falling eight spots to No. 22 after its overtime loss at Wichita State ended an eight-game winning streak.

No. 13 Purdue, No. 19 Arizona and No. 23 Kansas — the preseason No. 1-ranked team — all fell six spots, while No. 24 Mississippi tumbled five.

Ten teams fell from last week’s poll.

No. 25 Louisville was the week’s lone new addition, returning to the poll for the second time after a two-week stint in January. First-year coach Pat Kelsey has guided the program to its first 20-win season since 2019-20, with the Cardinals having lost just once since mid-December.

Creighton (No. 24) fell out of the rankings for the second time this season. The Bluejays were ranked for the first four weeks, then returned last week for what turned out to be a one-week stay.

Felix Okpara added to SEC Availability Report ahead of Vols’ game at Texas A&M

Image

Tennessee basketball forward Felix Okpara has been added to the SEC Availability Report ahead of Saturday afternoon’s game at Texas A&M.

Okpara is considered questionable to play against the Aggies due to a left ankle/foot injury he has been managing recently. The junior was also listed on the availability report prior to Tennessee’s game at Kentucky last Tuesday on Feb. 11, but was considered ‘probable.’ Okpara started and played 32 minutes in the loss to the Wildcats.

The former Ohio State transfer is averaging a career-high 7.6 points per game in his first season with the Vols. Okpara is a touch below his career-high in rebounds from a season ago at 6.3 boards per contest. He is shooting 59.7% from the field, has blocked 47 shots and has pulled down 62 offensive rebounds, all three of which lead the Vols. Okpara has started in all 26 of Tennessee’s games.

There were no Aggies listed on the availability report as all are considered available for the game. Tipoff between No. 6 Tennessee (21-5, 8-5 SEC) and No. 7 Texas A&M (20-6, 9-4 SEC) inside of Reed Arena is scheduled for 12 p.m. ET on ESPN.

Sophomore forward J.P. Estrella is the only other Vol listed on the availability report. Estrella had season-ending foot surgery in December to fix a stress fracture in his left foot. He averaged 4.7 points and 10.2 minutes in three games this season.

Estrella set a career high with five rebounds in Tennessee’s win at Louisville on Nov. 9, adding two points and a block. He opened the season by making both of his field-goal attempts in UT’s win over Gardner-Webb on Nov. 4.

The big man appeared in 25 games as a freshman last season, including eight of the final 10, totaling 40 points and 20 rebounds in 124 total minutes. He shot 15-of-21 (71.4 percent) from the floor to record the second-best field-goal clip among SEC players with at least 20 attempts and fifth-best mark among DI freshmen with 20-plus shots.

Estrella tied for third on the team with eight dunks and led the Volunteers with 2.58 slams per 40 minutes. Estrella made multiple field goals five times, thrice without a miss, and also grabbed multiple rebounds in four outings, scored six-plus points in three and played 12-plus minutes twice.

The Scarborough, Maine native played a career-high 15 minutes in Tennessee’s Elite Eight matchup with third-ranked Purdue and made his lone field-goal attempt, an alley-oop dunk to tie the game at 58 with 5:42 left.

Tennessee emerged as one of the top contenders for Rodney Colton Jr. while he was committed to South Carolina, and the Vols were the first team he visited after reopening his recruitment last month. They’re now one of a half-dozen programs scheduled to host him on official visits in May and June.

The four-star Class of 2026 linebacker from Newnan (Ga.) High School confirmed Friday that he’s set to take an official visit to Tennessee the weekend of June 13. Colton, a Top247 prospect, has also planned official visits to Colorado, Penn State, Missouri, UCLA and SMU as he begins to work toward his final college decision.

The NCAA Tournament selection committee unveiled its midseason top 16 seeds for the 2025 March Madness bracket last week, but a series of upsets and surprise results dramatically changed the field in the days since. Duke and Auburn remained No. 1 seeds with strong mid-week wins, while blue-blood Kansas continued its spiral with a stunning 91-57 loss at BYU.

Georgia and Xavier jumped from the first four out to the last four in this week. It would mark the Bulldogs’ first NCAA Tournament appearance in 10 seasons. A handful of big-named programs weren’t quite as lucky. Indiana, Arkansas and North Carolina remain outside of the NCAA Tournament bubble, with just a handful of regular season games left to play.

CBS Sports bracketologist Jerry Palm updated his NCAA Tournament projections after and eventful week. He highlighted Kentucky at Alabama on Saturday as a key matchup to watch for NCAA Tournament seeding.

RELATED (VIP) — NBA Draft: Stock up or stock down for college basketball’s more intriguing prospects

Here are the latest NCAA Tournament projections from CBS Sports:

Last Four In: Texas, Oklahoma, Xavier, Georgia

First Four Out: Indiana, Arkansas, North Carolina, Boise State

North Carolina remained on the outside of the NCAA Tournament picture despite its 24-point win over NC State (Quad 3). Georgia and Xavier jumped from the first four out to the last four in, while Arkansas fell to the wrong side of the bubble after its seven-point loss at Auburn, the second straight loss for John Calipari’s Wildcats.

No. 1 Auburn vs. No. 16 American / Southern

No. 8 Creighton vs. No. 9 Utah State

No. 5 Mississippi State vs. No. 12 George Mason

No. 4 St. John’s vs. No. 13 Yale

Auburn remained the top overall seed after taking care of Arkansas and has chances to further bolster its NCAA Tournament résumé with four ranked matchups over its final five games of the regular season. Mississippi State usurped Kansas as the No. 5 seed in the South Region after the Jayhawks’ 91-57 loss to BYU. Chris Jans and Mississippi State won back-to-back games against ranked opponents.

No. 6 Clemson vs. No. 11 Oklahoma / Georgia

No. 3 Purdue vs. No. 14 Chattanooga

No. 7 Illinois vs. No. 10 Vanderbilt

No. 2 Houston vs. No. 15 Norfolk State

Houston passed Texas A&M for the No. 2 seed in the South Region after notching its fifth straight win with a 80-65 beatdown of Arizona State in Tempe. Clemson jumped into the top region after it followed its 20-point win over North Carolina with a 26-point victory at Florida State. The Tigers are clearly the second-best team in the ACC behind Duke.

No. 1 Alabama vs. No. 16 Nebraska-Omaha

No. 8 Saint Mary’s vs. No. 9 UConn

No. 5 Marquette vs. No. 12 UC San Diego

No. 4 Michigan State vs. No. 13 Lipscomb

Alabama is set to make its fifth straight NCAA Tournament, matching its second-longest streak in program history. The Crimson Tide are poised for its second-ever No. 1 seed, both coming the last three seasons under Nate Oats. UConn is projected for its lowest seed of the Dan Hurley era.

No. 6 Memphis vs. No. 11 Drake

No. 3 Iowa State vs. No. 14 Utah Valley

No. 7 Maryland vs. No. 10 West Virginia

No. 2 Texas A&M vs. No. 15 Norfolk State

No region experienced more change over the last week than the bottom half of the Midwest. There’s eight new teams in this section from last week, which featured Tennessee at No. 2, Texas Tech at No. 3, Illinois at No. 6 and Louisville at No. 7. Texas A&M has never earned a No. 2 seed or better in the NCAA Tournament.

No. 1 Florida vs. No. 16 Bryant

No. 8 New Mexico vs. No. 9 Gonzaga

No. 5 Ole Miss vs. No. 12 Yale (Marquette)

No. 4 Arizona vs. No. 13 High Point

Florida remains a No. 1 seed in the updated bracketology after it throttled Oklahoma, 85-63, to improve to 23-3 on the season. The Gators haven’t entered March Madness higher than a No. 4 seed since the Billy Donovan era. Arizona rebounded from the 62-58 loss to Houston with a 75-67 win at Baylor to stay on the No. 4 seed-line.

No. 6 Kansas vs. No. 11 Wake Forest

No. 3 Kentucky vs. No. 14 South Alabama

No. 7 Louisville vs. No. 10 Nebraska

No. 2 Wisconsin vs. No. 15 Cleveland State

Kansas continues to tumble down seed-lines, this time falling from a No. 5 in the South to a No. 6 in the West following a stunning 91-57 loss at BYU on Tuesday. Kentucky bounced up to a No. 3 with its 82-61 win against Vanderbilt, setting up a chance at a March Madness rivalry clash with an ascending Louisville squad.

No. 1 Duke vs. No. 16 Quinnipiac / Southeast Missouri State

No. 8 Baylor vs. No. 9 San Diego State

No. 5 Texas Tech vs. No. 12 Liberty

No. 4 Missouri vs. No. 13 Akron

Duke remains the fourth No. 1 seed. The Blue Devils are at little risk of losing of falling from the No. 1 seed-line with zero ranked teams remaining but will have a hard time cracking the top three seeds for that same reason. Missouri earning a No. 4 seed would mark its highest since 2008-09.

No. 6 UCLA vs. No. 11 Texas / Xavier

No. 3 Michigan vs. No. 14 Towson

No. 7 Oregon vs. No. 10 BYU

No. 2 Tennessee vs. No. 15 Central Connecticut State

Tennessee is poised for back-to-back No. 2 seeds or better for the first time in program history. Dusty May guided Michigan to its first 20-win season in four years and more than doubled the Wolverines’ win total from last season’s abysmal 8-24 finish under Juwan Howard, earning a well-deserved contract extension on Friday.
