MORNING BRIEFING: METS PLAY FIRST SPRING TRAINING GAME TODAY

Posted by Tyler Antonelle | Feb 22, 2025

Good morning, Mets fans!

The Mets play their first spring training game of 2025 Saturday at 1:10 p.m. ET against the Astros. The game will be at Clover Park in Port St. Lucie. Carlos Mendoza announced earlier in the week that Clay Holmes would start and throw around 40-45 pitches in what will be his first outing against another team as a Met, and it will also be the first time we get to see Juan Soto play in a game as a Met.

Early Friday, the Yankees announced that they are changing their long-standing facial hair policy to allow “well-groomed” beards going forward. It’s a pretty monumental decision, as one of the longest and most controversial traditions in baseball ends after nearly 50 years.

Yankees pitching prospect Chase Hampton underwent Tommy John surgery and will miss at least the 2025 season. The 23-year-old pitched to a 2.41 ERA in limited action last year after having a 3.63 ERA in High-A and Double-A the year before.

Alexis Farinacci profiles the Mets’ no. 21 prospect, Christopher Suero.

Alexis Farinacci analyzes the Automated Ball-Strike system, and how it is being used in spring training games this year.

Born on This Date: Tim Peterson (1991), Chris Bassitt (1989), Kelly Johnson (1982), J.J. Putz (1977).
