Brandin Podziemski leaves Warriors game vs. Nets with back soreness

Fingers crossed.

The Golden State Warriors are in New York to finish off a five-game road trip with a visit to old friend D’Angelo Russell and the Brooklyn Nets. And, in keeping with a theme on the road trip, they’re once dealing with a potential injury. Less than a minute into the first quarter of Thursday’s game, starting shooting guard Brandin Podziemski signalled to the bench that he needed a substitution. Podziemski then walked straight to the team’s locker room, while holding his lower back.

It was a concerning moment. It was a non-contact injury, and Podziemski immediately signaled to the bench. There was no attempt to work it off and see how it feels, which is usually a bad sign. Thankfully, it seems like the injury isn’t too severe. At the start of the second quarter, the Warriors announced that Podziemski had left the game due to lower back soreness. His status for the rest of the game is to be determined, which certainly suggests that the initial prognosis is that the injury is mild. We’ll keep you updated when there’s any new information.

UPDATE: Podziemski has been ruled out for the rest of the game.

It’s the fourth injury that the Warriors have sustained on this road trip. Jimmy Butler III experienced back spasms that kept him out of Saturday’s loss to the Philadelphia 76ers, while Steph Curry rolled his ankle during a Monday win over the Charlotte Hornets, though he didn’t miss any time. Gary Payton II suffered a nasal fracture during that game as well, and missed Tuesday’s win over the New York Knicks.

Podziemski ruled out of Warriors-Nets game with lower back soreness

The Warriors can’t seem to catch a break from the injury bug.

Golden State guard Brandin Podziemski exited Thursday’s contest against the Brooklyn Nets within the first 45 seconds of game action, and he was ruled out for the remainder of the game with lower back soreness, the Warriors announced.

Podziemski played over a screen and stuck with Nets guard Cam Thomas before grabbing his lower back and asking coach Steve Kerr for a sub.

He then walked off the court and immediately toward the Warriors’ locker room. He later returned to the bench and was ruled questionable before eventually being ruled out in the third quarter.

The Warriors already are playing without one of their young players in Jonathan Kuminga, who has missed the past two months of action with an ankle injury.

Gary Payton II missed last game with a fractured nose but returned Thursday with a mask.

Like much of the Warriors, Podziemski has been playing the best basketball of the season since the team acquired Jimmy Butler at the trade deadline. The 22-year-old is averaging 13.6 points on 42.9-percent shooting, with 6.2 rebounds, 3.9 assists and 1.5 steals over the last 11 games (eight starts) in 30 minutes.
