Warriors vs. Trail Blazers injury report: Brandin Podziemski and Jonathan Kuminga remain out

Image

FILED UNDER:

The full injury report for tonight’s game.

The Golden State Warriors are back in action tonight, with a game they’re heavily favored to win. The Dubs host the Portland Trail Blazers who, while having a better season than most expected, are still a not-very good team. The Blazers are also fairly banged up, but the Warriors aren’t fully healthy, either.

Here’s the full injury report.

Out — Jonathan Kuminga (right ankle sprain)

It’s still unclear when Kuminga will return, but if I had to guess, I’d say at some point during this home-stand, which has five more games after this one.

Out — Brandin Podziemski (bilateral low back strain)

Podziemski will miss essentially his third consecutive game, after leaving Thursday’s win over the Brooklyn Nets less than a minute into the action. His injury isn’t considered serious, but you certainly need to be careful with backs.

Available — Gary Payton II (bilateral nasal bone fracture — facemask)

A third game with masked Payton! It seems to have unlocked a few superpowers, and he gets a chance at a revenge game tonight.

Out — Matisse Thybulle (right ankle sprain)

Thybulle, like Kuminga, has been out quite a while with an ankle injury. This will be his ninth straight game on the sidelines.

Sometimes it’s comfort, sometimes it’s food available, but always it’s the ability to pee the moment we need to. This raises the question: what happens when an athlete really has to go? Well, we’re here to discuss.

Out — Deandre Ayton (left calf strain)

Ayton has been having a decent, if not overwhelming season for the Blazers, averaging 14.4 points and 10.2 rebounds per game. But he’s been sidelined for the last month while dealing with a calf injury.

Out — Robert Williams III (left knee sprain)

You’ve got to feel for Williams, and also the teams that have employed him. He has such an interesting skillset, but such a hard time staying healthy. After playing just six games for the Blazers in his debut season with the team last year, he’s suited up just 20 times this season.

Doubtful — Jerami Grant (right knee tendinitis)

After back-to-back seasons averaging at least 20 points, Grant is down to 14.4 points per game this year … his lowest mark since the 2019-20 season. He played last night, and is questionable for the back-to-back.

Doubtful — Deni Avdija (left quad contusion)

Avdija’s first season with the Blazers has been going well, after a four-year stint with the Washington Wizards. He’s averaging a career-high 14.8 points per game, but might miss this contest.

Enjoy the action, Dub Nation!

The Portland Trail Blazers should have major beef with the NBA schedule makers.

After playing seven road games, the Blazers returned home to host Detroit on Sunday. Following a 119-112 loss, the Blazers got on a plane headed for San Francisco to play Monday at the Golden State Warriors.

That’s messed up.

“You come off a seven-game trip, two weeks,” Blazers coach Chauncey Billups said. “You turn around and have to play tomorrow on the road. We should have just played the Pistons at Oracle [in Oakland] and then played the Warriors tomorrow at Chase. This is a long trip, is basically what it is … It’s just a terrible scheduling thing. But it is what it is.”

The Blazers have no time for complaints. They must resume picking up some wins in the race for a play-in berth.

The Blazers trail 10th-place Dallas by four games.

Monday at the Warriors, however, likely won’t provide much of an opportunity for the Blazers to come out victorious.

Since acquiring Jimmy Butler from the Miami Heat, the Warriors have won 11 out of 13. One loss came 126-119 at Philadelphia (22-41), but Butler did not play.

Over those 13 games, the Warriors ranked second in offensive rating (119.9) and second in defensive rating (108.2).

Prediction: The Warriors are playing too well to believe that Portland will end its run of losing to winning teams playing the second game of a back-to-back on the road.

The Blazers’ last win over a team that currently has a winning record came on Feb. 6 at home against Sacramento (33-30). Their last road victory against a winning team was on Jan. 4 at Milwaukee (36-27).
