Marquette staggered by Villanova’s hot shooting in ugly loss at Wells Fargo Center

PHILADELPHIA − The Marquette men’s basketball team was staggered from the start on Friday night.

Villanova was scorching the nets from the start and the Golden Eagles could never recover in an 81-66 loss at Wells Fargo Center.

The Golden Eagles (20-7, 11-5 Big East), who are ranked 16th in the Associated Press top 25 and 15th in the USA TODAY coaches poll, lost to the Wildcats (16-12, 9-8) for the first time in nine games under head coach Shaka Smart.

Eric Dixon hit a three-pointer on Villanova’s first possession, and that was a sign of things to come.

Before MU knew what hit it, the score ballooned to 17-4.

Jhamir Bruckus hit his first 5 three-pointers for the Wildcats to lead the barrage. Villanova shot an eye-popping 12 for 15 on three-pointers in the first half and took a 46-33 lead at the break.

MU looked like it could get back in the game when the Wildcats missed their first triple of the second half and Chase Ross converted a three-point play.

But the Golden Eagles couldn’t get within single digits and Villanova pushed the lead back to 21 points.

A positive for MU was the play of sophomore guard Zaide Lowery, who has played with increased confidence lately and finished with a career-high 25 points and eight rebounds.

Dixon had 23 points and Brickus added 21 to lead Villanova. Jordann Dumont added 15 after coming into the game with just eight on the season.

The Wildcats’ NCAA Tournament hopes have faded considerably, so it will be interesting to see if they play with desperation against Marquette. The Golden Eagles had some success guarding Eric Dixon, the nation’s leading scorer, in the first matchup. They will need to do that again, and also exploit Villanov’s porous defense.
