Celtics-76ers recap: C’s dominate Philly in return from break
Derrick White joins Abby Chin for an exclusive 1-on-1 interview to share his thoughts on having his jersey added to the University of Colorado’s Wall of Honor, preparing for the second half of the season, and more!
The Boston Celtics returned from the NBA All-Star break Thursday with a 124-104 road win over the Philadelphia 76ers.
Jayson Tatum recorded his second triple-double of the season (15 points, 11 rebounds, 10 assists) to help fuel the Celtics’ eighth win in their last nine games. Payton Pritchard scored a game-high 28 points on eight 3-pointers.
The C’s are now 40-16 on the season. They’ll return home to take on the New York Knicks on Sunday.
Check out our live blog below for a full recap of Thursday’s game:
The red-hot Boston Celtics picked up where they left off before the break with a dominant victory over the Philadelphia 76ers.
It was the C’s fourth straight win and eighth in its last nine games. They blew out the Sixers with a barrage of 3-pointers, finishing a scorching 24-of-54 (44.4 percent) from deep. Philly shot just 8-of-39 (20.5 percent) from long range.
Payton Pritchard led the charge with a game-high 28 points on 8-of-15 shooting from 3-point range. Jaylen Brown had 20 points, followed by Kristaps Porzingis (17 points), Derrick White (16 points), and Jayson Tatum (15 points), in what was a total team effort.
Tatum added 11 rebounds and 10 assists for his second triple-double of the season.
All five Sixers starters scored in double figures, but it still wasn’t enough to keep up with Boston’s 3-point outburst. Paul George had a team-high 17 points for Philly, which has lost eight of its last nine.
Score: 118-92 Celtics, 4:50 left in fourth quarter
Jayson Tatum has his second triple-double of the season. The Celtics superstar has 15 points, 11 rebounds, and 10 assists.
It’s Tatum’s fourth career triple-double and the first time in his career that he has had two triple-doubles in a season.
Score: 100-74 Celtics
The bench unit should get plenty of run in the fourth quarter as the Celtics are cruising toward their fourth straight win and their eighth in their last nine games.
It’s been a total team effort with Jaylen Brown (20 points) and Payton Pritchard (19 points) leading the charge. Pritchard has contributed five 3s off the bench to help Boston shoot 18-for-38 (47.4 percent) from deep.
Jayson Tatum is on the cusp of a triple-double with 15 points, 10 assists, and nine rebounds. Al Horford has 11 points with three 3-pointers off the bench.
Score: 93-68 Celtics, 3:25 left in third quarter
Boston has its biggest lead of the night (25) as it has outscored Philly 21-12 so far in the third quarter.
The reigning champs are firing on all cylinders. They’re shooting 52.5 percent from the floor, including 17-of-34 from 3-point range. Jaylen Brown has a team-high 20 points and Payton Pritchard has 17 (5-9 3-PT) off the bench. Jayson Tatum is stuffing the stat sheet with 13 points, nine assists, and eight rebounds.
Score: 89-65 Celtics, 6:52 left in third quarter
Boston has extended its lead to 24 with a strong start to the second half. Jaylen Brown has a team-high 20 points with five assists. Jayson Tatum has 13 points and nine assists.
The C’s are a scorching 17-for-30 (56.7 percent) from 3-point range. That’s been the difference as the Sixers are just 3-of-22 (13.6 percent) from deep.
According to Celtics stats guru Dick Lipe, Jayson Tatum and Jaylen Brown’s combined 12 first-half assists marked the second most in their career. They combined for 13 assists in the first half against Toronto in 2021.
Luke Kornet threw down a thunderous jam during the second quarter. He finished the first half with six points and two rebounds in 11 minutes off the Celtics bench.
Score: 72-56 Celtics
The Celtics entered the All-Star break with seven wins over their last eight games, and they picked up where they left off with an outstanding first half vs. the Sixers at Wells Fargo Center.
They’ll take a 16-point lead into the locker room after shooting 15-of-25 (60 percent) from 3-point range in the first 24 minutes. Payton Pritchard (15 points, 5-7 3-PT) led the way in that category. Jayson Tatum (11 points), Kristaps Porzingis (10 points), Derrick White (6 points), and Al Horford (6 points) each notched a pair of 3s. Jaylen Brown has 13 points.
The Sixers got big first halves from their stars Tyrese Maxey (14 points), Joel Embiid (13 points), and Paul George (12 points), but it wasn’t enough to keep up with Boston’s 3-point barrage.
Score: 62-51 Celtics, 2:33 left in second quarter
The Sixers have played well so far, but they simply haven’t been able to keep up with the sharpshooting C’s. Boston is 13-of-23 from 3-point range with Payton Pritchard contributing five of those makes. He leads the Celtics with 15 points.
Jaylen Brown has added 11 for Boston. Joel Embiid and Paul George have 13 and 12 for Philly, respectively.
Score: 50-38 Celtics, 8:20 left in second quarter
Payton Pritchard is on fire from 3-point range. He’s 5-for-6 from deep for a game-high 15 points.
Celtics big man Luke Kornet has made his presence felt with a pair of emphatic jams. The bench duo has propelled Boston to a 12-point lead with plenty of time left in the first half.
Score: 36-28 Celtics
Payton Pritchard buried a pair of 3-pointers to help the Celtics take an eight-point lead into the second quarter. Boston is a red-hot 8-for-12 from 3-point range so far. All five starters have made shots from long range along with Pritchard and Al Horford.
Jaylen Brown and Kristaps Porzingis lead the C’s with seven points apiece. Joel Embiid has a team-high eight for Philadelphia.
Score: 24-22 Celtics, 3:14 left in first quarter
Kristaps Porzingis has seven points, two rebounds, and a steal for Boston. Joel Embiid has six points, three assists, and two rebounds for Philly.
Jaylen Brown also has seven points for the C’s, who are 4-of-6 from 3-point range.
Score: 13-11 Celtics, 6:49 left in first quarter
The Celtics and Sixers both have looked sharp to start this one.
All five Boston starters have tallied at least one field goal. The C’s are shooting 5-9 from the floor with Derrick White’s 3-pointer their only make from long range thus far. Jaylen Brown has a team-high four points.
Philly is also 5-9 from the floor. Paul George leads the group with five points and has the team’s only 3.
Celtics coach Joe Mazzulla weighed in with his thoughts on the possibility of a WNBA team coming to Boston:
Celtics: Derrick White, Jrue Holiday, Jaylen Brown, Jayson Tatum, Kristaps Porzingis.
76ers: Tyrese Maxey, Quentin Grimes, Kelly Oubre Jr., Paul George, Joel Embiid.
Jrue Holiday is available for the Celtics for the first time since Feb. 4. Xavier Tillman (left knee inflammation) is the only player out for Boston.
Chris Mannix joins Early Edition to discuss the state of the Celtics, and who their biggest threat is in the league.
The NBA All-Star Game might have been an interminable slog with very limited amounts of actual basketball, but the All-Star break is zipping by. The Boston Celtics will be back on the floor Thursday night in Philadelphia ready to rip through 27 games in 53 nights to finish up the 2024-25 regular season.
Here are the six biggest questions we’ll be seeking answers to in the “second half” of the season:
You know the numbers by now. The Celtics are a league-best 22-6 on the road but somehow just 17-10 at home.
Those TD Garden missteps ultimately may cost the Celtics a chance at the top spot in the Eastern Conference — more on that later — but the good news is that a slew of top-tier opponents should increase Boston’s focus level on its home turf.

So let’s do a status check on all seven of our bold preseason predictions and then we’ll add a handful more prognostications to the mix.
Brown’s counting stats are very similar to last season when he was an All-NBA snub. Hurting his cause: His offensive efficiency is down. His 32.4 3-point percentage would be a career low, and his 46.1 percent shooting overall would be his worst field goal percentage since his rookie season.
