Shows like ‘Yellowstone’ to watch
The long-awaited second season of the Yellowstone prequel, 1923, premieres this Sunday, Feb. 23. Episodes will drop weekly on Sundays through Apr. 13.
1923 streams exclusively on Paramount+, and will not air on TV (no, not even on Paramount Network, where Yellowstone aired). So to tune into Season 2 you’ll need a Paramount+ subscription.
Paramount+ has two tiers available: an $8/month ad-supported tier and a $13 premium tier that’s ad-free and includes Showtime and live access to your local CBS channel. In addition to 1883 and 1923, Paramount+ offers a host of other live sports, hit shows and new and classic movies.
Unlike a lot of other streaming services these days, Paramount+ still offers a one-week free trial — so new subscribers can sign up to watch 1923 and check out the rest of the Paramount+ library totally free for seven days.
Harrison Ford and Helen Mirren star in 1923 alongside Brandon Sklenar, Julia Schlaepfer, Jerome Flynn, Darren Mann, Brian Geraghty, Aminah Nieves, Michelle Randolph, Sebastian Roché, Timothy Dalton and Jennifer Carpenter.

While 1923 was originally slated to be a limited series like 1883, the show is now in its second season. Unfortunately, actor Brandon Sklenar seemingly confirmed to The Hollywood Reporter that Season 2 will be the show’s last.
“No, no, it’s bookend. It’s still limited, but I think of it as one piece — there’s just a split in the middle, but it’s all one piece. It will conclude,” the It Ends With Us star said.
1923 is a prequel series to Yellowstone, much like its predecessor, 1883. There are more Yellowstone prequels in the works including a sequel to 1923 called 1944.
Taylor Sheridan’s Western world is full of prequels, sequels and spinoffs, here’s the general timeline for the Yellowstone universe:
1883
1923
1944 (coming soon)
Yellowstone
The Madison (formerly 2024)

Brandon Sklenar Feels Like a ‘Different Man’ Going into 1923 Season 2, Had ‘Way More’ Pressure in Season 1 (Exclusive)
Sklenar tells PEOPLE he approached the long-awaited second season, which sees Spencer journey to Montana, “like it’s the last thing I’m ever going to do”

Brandon Sklenar is not the same person he was during season 1 of 1923 — and neither is his character.
The 34-year-old actor, who plays WWI vet turned African game hunter Spencer Dutton in the Yellowstone prequel series, tells PEOPLE he “felt way more” pressure in the show’s first season than he did for its long-awaited second installment.
“I didn’t know what it was,” he says of season 1, which premiered in December 2022. “I didn’t know who [Spencer] was, I didn’t know how he was going to sound, I didn’t know how he was going to feel, I didn’t know the tone of the show, really.”

“And then I had almost two years between season 1 and season 2 and did other projects and just grew as a human being over two years. I was [in] my early 30s — those are some big years developmentally,” he says. “I’m effectively a different man going into season 2 and therefore [Spencer] is.”
Sklenar, who starred in It Ends With Us in the gap between seasons, says season 2 has “an entirely different feeling.”
The upcoming episodes find Spencer amid his harrowing journey home to Montana, where his aunt Cara Dutton (Helen Mirren) and uncle Jacob Dutton (Harrison Ford) eagerly await his arrival to help defend their family’s ranch.
“[I] honestly didn’t feel much pressure in terms of an expectation,” Sklenar says of returning to set. But he did feel “a responsibility to do the best work” possible and “just pour every ounce of myself into it.”
“I was literally like, ‘I’m going to approach this like it’s the last thing I’m ever going to do,'” he shares.
“You have to leave no stone unturned because [Taylor Sheridan’s] words are just so good,” he continues. “And I was reading these episodes, I was like, ‘Man, this is going to be good.'”
This season is also an entirely different experience for Sklenar, both in terms of his character’s experience and his own, as Spencer and his wife Alex (Julia Schlaepfer) remain separated following the emotional season 1 finale.
“It was a trip,” he says of the separation from Schlaepfer, 29. “It was her and I every day for season 1 for five, almost six months.”

As a result of the separation from Alex, with whom Spencer is “a very specific version of himself,” Skelnar says season 2 “brings out different sides” of his character.
It also meant Sklenar was “working opposite different people all the time,” which was new too. “Getting to explore other parts of him through these other characters that come in and out was a lot of fun.”

1923 stars Harrison Ford and Helen Mirren promise a ‘worldwide story’ with season 2: ‘It’s epic’
Mirren says season 2 of the “Yellowstone” prequel features a “wonderful mix of the hugeness of human life and then the small, intimate details of human life as well.”

Grab your passport! Helen Mirren and Harrison Ford have revealed 1923 is going global once again in season 2.
The actors — who star as Cara and Jacob Dutton on the Golden Globe-nominated Yellowstone prequel — tell Entertainment Weekly that the forthcoming season of the Taylor Sheridan-penned Western will see its cast of characters setting out to explore brand new frontiers.
“Obviously, Harrison and I are a part of it. There are many other adventures happening all over the world,” Mirren explains. “And that’s the extraordinary thing Taylor has done, is written a worldwide story.”

Despite the many miles separating the Dutton family, the Oscar-winning actress says that Sheridan managed to highlight the massive scale of this season while also making sure that individual storylines felt contained and “deeply personal.”
“The relationship between Cara and Jacob is absolutely intimate and small and domestic — but, at the same time, [the show’s] massive. It’s epic. It’s huge,” she adds. “So we’ve got that wonderful mix of the hugeness of human life and then the small, intimate details of human life as well.”
The first season of 1923 ended with several of its characters scattered across the globe, with Spencer Dutton (Brandon Sklenar) heading back home to Montana to protect his family and their ranch; his wife Alexandra (Julia Schlaepfer) being forcibly shipped back to England by her parents; and Teonna (Aminah Nieves) having fled South with her father after killing Sister Mary (Jennifer Ehle); and Father Renaud (Sebastian Roché) and Marshal Kent (Jamie McShane) chasing after them.
Spencer’s separation from his family, in particular, is causing extreme hardship for Cara and Jacob, who are trying to keep their heads above water amid growing financial difficulties and a brutal winter.
“The pressure of everyday life in this context — especially in winter, and especially when you’re beset by enemies on every every edge of your life — there are financial issues that have come to their crux. There’s the physical threat to the lives of the Duttons, and the family is not yet together in order to be able to push back against some of these threats,” Ford says. “So the strings are coming together to knit the whole thing into a really fantastic fabric, which supplies the storylines for this season of the show.”
All of these pressures have also fundamentally transformed their characters into hardened survivalists. “The personalities of the people that we play are forged by these circumstances in a way that’s very hard to imagine living a contemporary life,” Ford says. “This is a tough, tough life, and it bred really tough people who had to do things that were either distasteful or impossible for people in our culture to deal with, or even conceive of dealing [with], in life.”
Mirren adds that the couple is choosing to focus on the present — rather than the looming chaos that lies ahead — when viewers first meet them in season 2.
“I don’t think these are people who particularly think about what they’re thinking about, if you know what I mean,” she adds. “They are the sort of people who just deal with what’s immediately in front of their eyes, and they don’t think about the implications of anything. The only way they can survive is simply by driving forward.”
