‘SNL50’ Weekend Update: Bill Murray Roasts the Show’s White Anchors, Bobby Moynihan’s Drunk Uncle Yells ‘Not My Captain America’ Over Anthony Mackie
By Joe Otterson
The “Weekend Update” segment at the “SNL” 50th anniversary special on Sunday brought back legendary cast member Bill Murray to rank the segment’s past hosts.
Murray started by ranking “Weekend Update’s” Black hosts, which put current co-host Michael Che at number one — by virtue of the fact there has only been one Black host in the show’s history.
Murray then went through a top 10 ranking of the “regular” hosts of “Weekend Update.” Murray immediately took himself out of the running for the ranking, due to the fact he was on performance enhacing drugs. “It’s what we called an ‘8H Shaker,’” Murray said. “Quaaludes, cocaine, and Nighttime TheraFlu.”
Colin Quinn came in at number 10, followed by Kevin Nealon, Dennis Miller, and Seth Meyers. “I’m gonna put Tina and Amy just ahead of Tina and Jimmy,” Murray continued. “Jimmy, I’m sorry, and congratulations Tina. It was close but I looked online and girl on girl is still very popular.”
“Next up, Cornelius Crane Chase, who we’ve all come to know as Conny,” Murray said. “Let’s face it. ‘Weekend Update’ would simply not exist without him, so it would be wrong to have him listed anywhere but number four.”
Jane Curtin and Dan Aykroyd came in at number three, followed by Norm Macdonald. And at number one, Murray continually teased that Colin Jost would be on the list. The number one entry on the list was described as “funny, he’s got a great smile, and he’s currently sleeping every kind of way with the lovely actress Scarlett Johansson — my brother, Brian Doyle-Murray!”
Earlier in the segment, Bobby Moynihan reprised his Drunk Uncle character for his take on current events. “Oh great, we’re in a brave new world!” he lamented. “Not my Captain America!” When Jost tried to rein him in, Drunk Uncle grabbed Jost forcefully, actually ripping at least one button off his suit jacket.
“So I’m not Land Shark, ok?” he continued, referencing the recurring “SNL” character from the 1970s. “So I’m not Brian Fellows Safari Planet, ok? So I’m not musical guest Timothée Chalamet! Cheeseburger Cheeseburger Cheeseburger Cheeseburger!”
“Right, from the ’70s,” Jost interjected. “No, I misplaced four cheeseburgers!” Drunk Uncle responded.

Another person commented, “It feels so good to see Drunk Uncle again hahahahahah.”
Born on January 31, 1977, in Eastchester, New York, Bobby Moynihan is best known for his work on ‘Saturday Night Live.’ Beyond the iconic sketch show, he has also appeared in films like ‘IF’ and ‘Inside Out 2.’ Moynihan is married to Brynn O’Malley.
Drunk Uncle has been a fan-favorite recurring character on Weekend Update since 2011. The sketch often features Moynihan playing the role of a drunken, unhinged blue-collar worker, delivering hilarious commentary on recent events.
In an interview with Vulture, Moynihan spoke about how the character came to life.
“I was writing a different sketch at five in the morning. Colin Jost was like, “Do you have anything? I’ve got to write an ‘Update’ thing.” When you got on SNL, you had to give them a list of your pre-existing characters — just in case you made money off of them, I guess. I wrote down “Drunk Uncle Mike” — I didn’t even know what it meant. I was writing fake character names down, just in case,” Moynihan revealed.
He added, “I said, “I do this drunk thing to make my buddy Chris Gethard laugh all the time. I could be like a drunk uncle, a drunk guy — that guy at your house, everyone has one.” Colin was like, “Great, thanks.” And I remember thinking Well, at least I have that later at the read-through. Then it bombed. Then cut to this. [Holds up a Drunk Uncle Funko Pop.] Fifteen-year-old Bobby can’t believe that there’s a Drunk Uncle Funko Pop. It doesn’t make sense to me.”

Bill Murray Reprises Nick The Lounge Singer For ‘SNL50’ Concert With Paul Shaffer & Special Guests
By Glenn Garner
How do you possibly follow Miley Cyrus and Bad Bunny during the SNL50: The Homecoming Concert? With a classic sketch character.
SNL alum Bill Murray graced the stage Friday at Radio City Music Hall in New York City as he reprised his smooth-talking character Nick the Lounge Singer (aka Nick Valentine) from the NBC sketch comedy show, accompanied by Paul Shaffer on piano.
Following a humorous monologue about “an increasing acceptance of different types of families, different types of relationships,” before introducing “three of the most beautiful ladies a man could ever hope to meet.”
Murray, who created the character during his 1977-1980 run as an SNL castmember, was then joined by fellow alums Ana Gasteyer, Maya Rudolph and Cecily Strong in ’60s chic backup singer attire, accompanying him with a performance of Marvin Gaye and Tammi Terrell’s “You’re All I Need to Get By.”
Following the performance, Murray introduced Eddie Vedder, who was followed by performances from Tracy Morgan and The B52s.
Hosted by alum Jimmy Fallon, the lineup also features Jelly Roll, Brandi Carlile, Mumford & Sons, Lady Gaga, Post Malone, Arcade Fire, Chris Martin, Backstreet Boys, Bonnie Raitt, David Byrne, Brittany Howard, Devo, The Roots, Preservation Hall Jazz Band, Robyn, Jack White, Cher, Dave Grohl, Lauryn Hill, Snoop Dogg, St. Vincent and Wyclef Jean.
Up next, SNL50: The Anniversary Special airs live Sunday at 8pm ET/5pm PT on NBC and Peacock.
