Michigan vs Michigan State basketball ending delayed by fight: Score, recap, highlights
Michigan State basketball completed the sweep over its Big Ten basketball rival in the regular season finale.
MSU took down Michigan basketball on the back of a dominant first half for a 79-62 win on senior day at the Breslin Center. The No. 7 Spartans (26-5, 17-3 Big Ten) already locked up the outright conference championship Thursday with their comeback win over Iowa and finished on a seven-game winning streak. The No. 15 Wolverines (22-9, 14-6) have lost three in a row.
Michigan State jumped on the Wolverines early for a 50-28 halftime lead, which allowed it to coast to a comfortable 17-point win despite struggling on offense in the second half. Tre Holloman led MSU with 20 points off the bench, while freshman phenom Jase Richardson finished with 18 and senior Jaden Akins had 11 in his final game at the Breslin Center. Vlad Goldin led Michigan with 29 points, while fellow big man Danny Wolf had 18 points and 13 rebounds.
Michigan State is the No. 1 seed in the Big Ten men’s basketball tournament in Indianapolis, which begins Wednesday, and will play Friday at noon in the quarterfinals.
Michigan also has a double-bye to Friday’s quarterfinals and will finish as the 3-seed behind Maryland. The rivals cannot meet again until the Big Ten tournament championship game.
Here’s a recap of Michigan State-Michigan with highlights.
Michigan State got a tough layup from Jase Richardson and a long midrange jumper from Jaden Akins to close out the comfortable win over Michigan and completed the season sweep. MSU was up by enough late to let the seniors, Akins, Szymon Zapala and Frankie Fidler, kiss the Spartan logo at midcourt. Michigan’s guards L.J. Cason and Phat Phat Brooks got in a shoving match with Tre Holloman for standing on midcourt as the Spartans were trying to carry out their annual tradition.
Michigan State snapped out of its offensive rut to keep Michigan at an arm’s length heading into the final minutes. Tre Holloman has a pair of midrange jumpers to answer six points from Vlad Goldin and Danny Wolf, who is now up to 15 points and 13 rebounds after a quiet first half.
Michigan State ended its scoreless drought on a late shot clock 3 from Jase Richardson. The freshman was on the ground early in the possession after colliding with a referee, but he shook off the limp to hit a much-needed shot for the Spartans. Michigan State will have 1-and-1 free throws from Tre Holloman following the TV timeout.
Michigan has turned up the defense and gotten out in transition to spark a 14-0 run. MSU has gone nearly five minutes without a point, while the Wolverines, powered by Vlad Goldin and Danny Wolf, have made it again again. Goldin has accounted for over half of Michigan’s points with 26.
Michigan has started to show some life in the second half but still trails by 18 with less than 12 minutes left. The Wolverines are on a 7-0 run, including five straight points from Danny Wolf. Wolf has eight points in the second half. MSU has seven turnovers in the second half but still leads comfortably thanks to consecutive Tre Holloman midrange jumpers and Carson Cooper free throws, which briefly gave them a 25-point lead.
Vlad Goldin has all five points for Michigan in the second half, bringing his total to 19 of the Wolverines’ 33 points. But, no one else can get anything going. Michigan State answered an old-fashioned Goldin 3-point play with a long-range shot from Jaxon Kohler, who has nine points and five rebounds.
The first points in the second half came via free throws. Goldin fouled Jase Richardson on a layup attempt and then pushed Fears away from the Wolverines’ player huddle to receive the technical foul. The referees reviewed the play and gave Fears a technical for jawing in Goldin’s face to draw the shove.
It was all Michigan State in the first 20 minutes. Jase Richardson and Tre Holloman with 11 points apiece and Jaden Akins has nine, all coming on early 3s to give MSU the early edge. Eight of Michigan State’s 10 players have scored, including 21 points from the bench. Michigan State has forced 11 turnovers, including seven from steals. leading to 18 points, and has only given the ball away twice. Michigan State shot 47.1% from the field (16-of-34), 38.9% from 3 (7-of-18) and 91.7% from the free throw line (11-of-12).
Vlad Goldin leads Michigan with 14 points and four rebounds. Only three other Michigan players have a field goal, and Nimari Burnett is the only other player who has hit more than one shot. Danny Wolf had three points, all from free throws, and three turnovers. Michigan shot 40.9% from the field (9-of-22), 20% from 3 (2-of-10) and 66.7% from the free throw line (8-of-12).
MSU is keeping the foot on the gas. Richardson got free on the baseline for a two-handed dunk, followed by a Jaden Akins steal and dump-off to Jaxon Kohler in transition for a one-handed slam to take the roof off the Breslin Center. Michigan then split a pair of free throws, but MSU had yet another answer in the form of a Tre Holloman 3 to go up 50-26. Michigan State called its use-it-or-lose it timeout after Nimari Burnett committed a charge. Michigan has 11 turnovers to Michigan State’s one.
Vlad Goldin, now up to 14 points, ended the run with a pair of free throws, followed by a bucket from Tre Donaldson to briefly cut the lead to 14. Jase Richardson answered with a layup before a jump ball sent the game to TV timeout.
Michigan State’s defense turned up the dial again to spark an 8-0 run. MSU forced back-to-back turnovers and got an above-the-rim block from Coen Carr, leading to eight unanswered points on a pair of Carr free throws and 3-pointers from Jase Richardson and Tre Holloman.
Michigan State pushed the lead back to 12 at the under-8 minute TV timeout on a putback layup from Coen Carr. MSU has seven players who have scored early.
Michigan has started to find a rhythm on offense, primarily by playing through Goldin in the post, but MSU has kept the lead in the double digits. Goldin has 10 of Michigan’s 13 points, with Nimari Burnett as the only other scorer on a long-range shot. After the early hot start, Michigan State is now 1-of-8 on their last eight shots.
Michigan State has found an early rhythm from deep. Michigan State is 4-of-7 from 3-point range, including three from Jaden Akins. The Spartans have held Michigan without a basket over the last three minutes to push the lead out to 14 in the first 10 minutes. Holloman has provided five points off the bench and Akins has nine. The Wolverines have more turnovers, seven, than points.
Michigan State has an early three-point edge at the first TV timeout and has already forced one timeout from Michigan coach Dusty May. MSU went up 8-3 early thanks to a pair of Jaden Akins 3-pointers, forcing a Wolverine timeout. Michigan answered with a Vlad Goldin layup, who has all five points so far, but Carson Cooper will shoot two free throws for MSU after the timeout.

Shawn Windsor, Detroit Free Press: Tom Izzo has lost on senior day before. And Michigan is due to make some perimeter shots. So a (slight) upset is possible. But it won’t happen at the Breslin Center. The Spartans may not have the Big Ten title to play for anymore thanks to their win at Iowa, but they’re hunting for a top-two seed in the NCAA tournament and the Wolverines are their rival. It may take some work down the stretch, but MSU gets the sweep. The pick: MSU 74, U-M 68.
The game features the top announcing crew from CBS, starting with Ian Eagle on play-by-play, Bill Raftery and former Pistons All-Star Grant Hill providing analysis and Tracy Wolfson bringing insight and observations on the court.
Michigan leads the all-time series, 104-91 but since MSU was added to the Big Ten in 1950, the Spartans hold the edge, 74-66. Michigan State has a 32-16 record against Michigan since the start of the 1999-2000 season.
