Oilers acquiring defenceman Jake Walman from Sharks

The Edmonton Oilers are adding to their blue line ahead of the trade deadline.

According to Sportsnet’s Elliotte Friedman, Jake Walman is headed to the Oilers from the San Jose Sharks.

The Fourth Period’s David Pagnotta was the first to report the news on Thursday.

The return for San Jose was not immediately known.

Walman, a 29-year-old Toronto native, has six goals and 26 assists in 50 games for last-place San Jose this season.

It’s his first campaign in California after starting his career with three years each in St. Louis and Detroit. Across 252 career contests, Walman’s notched 31 goals and 52 assists.

Walman is under contract through next season at $3.4 million AAV on a deal originally signed with the Red Wings. Detroit traded him to San Jose at last June’s NHL Draft for a second-round pick.

He now joins an Oilers team that recently added forwards Trent Frederic and Max Jones in a trade with the Boston Bruins.

Edmonton, the reigning Western Conference champion, has struggled of late with just one win in six games since returning from the 4 Nations Face-Off break.

The Edmonton Oilers are working on a deal to acquire defenceman Jake Walman from the San Jose Sharks with the return expected to be a conditional draft pick and prospect once the trade is finalized, according to TSN’s Ryan Rishaug.

Rishaug reports that the Oilers may be taking on Walman’s full cap hit in the deal, confirming an earlier sense that they’d most likely be using Evander Kane’s LTIR money.

Walman is in the second-year of a three-year, $10.2 million deal that carries an AAV of $3.4 million.

The Toronto native has appeared in 50 games this season for the Sharks and posted six goals and 26 assists with a minus-1 rating.

He is in his first season in San Jose after the team picked him up in a trade with the Detroit Red Wings on June 25.

The 29-year-old spent three seasons with the Red Wings and had a career-high 12 goals in 2023-24.

He was selected 82nd overall in the third round of the 2014 NHL Entry Draft by the St. Louis Blues.

Walman made his NHL debut as a member of the Blues in 2019-20 and played 57 games with the franchise.

In a surprising move, the Oilers appear to be acquiring a player who wasn’t on anyone’s trade board.

David Pagnotta and Elliotte Friedman reported that a deal between the Oilers and San Jose Sharks is in the works. The two teams connected in the summer when the Oilers sent Cody Ceci to California in exchange for Ty Emberson.

Sheng Peng reports that Walman is not taking part in line rushes during warmups for the Sharks game on Thursday night against the Colorado Avalanche.

Oilers Now radio host Bob Stauffer spoke about the potential trade on the Sportsnet broadcast. On the panel, he said that he doesn’t believe the prospect going to the Sharks is one of Beau Akey, Matt Savoie, or Sam O’Reilly.

Stay tuned for more details.

Walman was a 2014 3rd-round draft selection by the St. Louis Blues. He was traded to the Sharks this past summer for future considerations.
