Match Preview: Borussia Dortmund Host Lille
FILED UNDER:
The War Machine Awaits
The Round of Sixteen is finally here and Borussia Dortmund host Ligue 1 side, Lille, in a vital fixture tomorrow. Borussia Dortmund showed how a strong first leg can be decisive after their play-in matches against Sporting and Kovac’s men will now be looking to capitalize on their homefield advantage. The team is, for what feels like the first time this season, in a purple patch after eight goals in their last two games and three clean sheets in a row. The Bundesliga’s cannon fodder, however, is no comparison to a Lille side that beat Real Madrid and Atletico Madrid to earn their place in the UCL’s top eight. Arguably the most important game of Niko Kovac’s tenure takes place tomorrow and we will see how far Borussia Dortmund have come.
For Lille, this match comes at a pivotal time time in their season. They were bounced out of the Coup de France at home by Ligue 2 side Dunkerque and their hopes for UCL football next season were just dashed after a 4-1 rout in Paris. Bruno Genesio’s squad are also an engima. Lille have struggled to create opportunities for their star striker, Jonathan David, and find themselves with the third best goals-against tally in Ligue 1 despite their xGA placing them in eight place. Despite the meager reading, Lille have found a way to win important games all season and capped off their last UCL match with a dominant 6-1 display over Feyenoord. The most menacing thing about Dortmund’s opposition, however, is their selection of nicknames spanning from Les Dogues (The mastiffs) to La Machine de Guerre (The War Machine). They could frankly win the match off of that last nickname alone.
Close your eyes USMNT fans, because Jonathan David is arguably North America’s best striker and one of the best players in Ligue 1. Canada’s all-time top goal scorer has 30 goal involvements across 37 games this season including 8 goals and 3 assists in 12 UCL matches. Jonathan David is everything your youth soccer coach wanted in a player – he’s intelligent, physical, two-footed, and has a work rate that few other strikers can match. He will not only be Lille’s primary outlet throughout the match, but he will also be looking to harry any attempt to build the ball out of the back.
Fear the Wall’s Grand Poobah, Sean Keyser, is on a much deserved vacation so I have taken some creative liberties with our lineup design for today. Please express your support for my artistic passion in the comments below.
As for things that really matter, like a soccer blogger’s lineup prediction, we should all expect Serhou Guirassy to lead the lineup tomorrow. Karim Adeyemi spoke highly of his role in the pre-match press conference and should be locked in to start as well. I predict Jamie Gittens to return to the lineup despite our commenters’ visceral hatred of him and Julian Brandt should be feeling rested for the match. Sabitzer and Gross have proven themselves as Kovac’s go-to guys in a double pivot. Ramy Bensebaini has found his form in recent matches while the Schlotterbeck and Can backline has kept three clean sheets running. Julian Ryerson was out with a flu but is expected to return to the squad, if not the starting eleven. Gregor Kobel should be expected to start unless he gets one of his famous ‘Round of Sixteen warmup injuries’.
