About Tanveer Sangha, Australia’s surprise inclusion in semi-final against India
Australia’s Tanveer Sangha earns surprise 2025 ICC Champions Trophy call-up, coming from humble beginnings.
Australia’s decision to include young leg-spinner Tanveer Sangha in their squad for the 2025 ICC Champions Trophy semi-final against India has surprised many.
The 21-year-old, of Indian descent, has been making waves in domestic cricket but had yet to make his mark on the international stage before his selection. Sangha, having played only 3 ODIs prior to Tuesday’s match, is still inexperienced at the highest level.
Born in Sydney to Indian and Fijian parents, Sangha’s journey to the Australian national team has been nothing short of remarkable. His father, Joga Singh, a taxi driver, hails from a village near Jalandhar, Punjab, while his mother, Upjeet Kaur, works as an accountant in Sydney.
Despite his roots, Sangha’s cricketing aspirations were always tied to Australia, where he honed his craft from a young age.
Sangha first gained attention when he emerged as Australia’s leading wicket-taker in the 2020 ICC Under-19 Cricket World Cup, picking up 15 wickets at an impressive average of 11.46. His performances led to a state contract with New South Wales at just 18 years old, and he quickly climbed the ranks, making his Big Bash League debut for Sydney Thunder in 2020.
He finished as the tournament’s third-highest wicket-taker, claiming 21 scalps at an economy of just over eight runs per over.
His rapid rise continued when he was named in Australia’s T20I squad for their series against New Zealand in 2021, and he made his international debut in August 2023 against South Africa. Sangha announced himself with a stunning 4-31 in four overs, the best figures by an Australian on T20I debut in nearly two decades. At 21, he became the youngest Australian to claim four wickets in a T20I.
Sangha’s ability to turn the ball sharply, coupled with his fearless approach, made him a valuable asset for Australia heading into the 2023 World Cup. His selection highlights the team’s faith in young talent and their need for quality spin options in subcontinental conditions.
As Sangha steps onto the global stage, all eyes will be on the young spinner to see if he can make a lasting impact on cricket’s biggest stage.

Australia pick FOUR SPINNERS As They Opt To Bat; India Unchanged As Varun Picked
In an almost unprecedented move, Australia have picked as many as four spinners as they have opted to bat first in the ICC Champions Trophy 2025 semi-final against India in Dubai on March 4 (Tuesday).
Steve Smith called it right and India ended up losing yet another toss – their 14th in a row in ODIs, Rohit Sharma’s 11th consecutive toss lost in the format.
Australia have brought in spin-bowling all-rounder Cooper Connolly for the injured Matthew Short, while they’ve picked leg-spinner Tanveer Sangha for Spencer Johnson. That makes it four spinners capable of bowling 10 overs for the Aussies, with Adam Zampa and Glenn Maxwell being the other two. Needless to say, both Travis Head and Marnus Labuschagne can also chip-in with more overs of spin. It remains to be seen who will open alongside Travis Head for the Aussies but young Connolly looks to be the favourite.
India, meanwhile, have also gone in with four specialist spinners as Varun Chakaravarthy retained his spot in the Indian playing 11. Chakaravarthy picked a five-fer in the clash against New Zealand and he’s been rewarded for his superb form. It means that Mohammed Shami and Hardik Pandya are the only seam-bowling options at India’s disposal.
Rohit Sharma (capt), Shubman Gill, Virat Kohli, Shreyas Iyer, Axar Patel, KL Rahul (wk), Hardik Pandya, Ravindra Jadeja, Mohammed Shami, Kuldeep Yadav, Varun Chakravarthy
Cooper Connolly, Travis Head, Steven Smith (capt), Marnus Labuschagne, Josh Inglis (wk), Alex Carey, Glenn Maxwell, Ben Dwarshuis, Nathan Ellis, Adam Zampa, Tanveer Sangha
Steve Smith – We’ll have a bat. It looks like a pretty dry surface. The guys had a couple of sessions, ready to go. It should take turn. Very good side – India. Two changes. Cooper Connolly comes in for Short, Sangha comes in for Johnson.
Rohit Sharma – I was prepared to do both. When you’re confused, it’s better to lose the toss. The pitch keeps changing its nature. You have to play good cricket. We’ve played good cricket in all three games and that’s what we’ll try to do. It’s going to be challenging. We are playing with the same team. We want to continue from where we left. Now that we are bowling first, we have to bowl well and restrict them to as low as possible.
“It’s not too hot, a gentle breeze blowing across the ground. 77m down the ground, square boundaries – 69m and 62m. The pitch looks very bare, very dry and very cracked. Still battable, win the toss and bat first. The ball will grip. Looks good for the spinners,” say Michael Atherton and Ramiz Raja.

Australia roped in leg-spinner Tanveer Sangha into the playing XI for the semi-final of the ICC Men’s Champions Trophy 2025 against India at the Dubai International Stadium on Tuesday.
Sangha, 23, bowls right-handed and has been making waves in the Big Bash League (BBL) for the Sydney Thunder. He has risen the ranks through the U-19 setup, picking 15 wickets in the World Cup in 2020 to emerge as the players with the most dismissals in the competition.
