Inflationary Pressure Remains in Germany
ifo price expectations in Germany remained almost unchanged in February at 19.4 points, down from 19.5 points* in January. “Despite the weak economic development, inflation in Germany is still above the European Central Bank’s target value for the time being,” says ifo Head of Economic Research Timo Wollmershäuser. While fewer service providers are planning to raise their prices, manufacturing and retail companies see more scope for higher prices.
For service providers, the indicator fell to 24.0 points, down from 32.2 points* in January. There are fewer companies in the business-related sectors in particular that want to raise their prices (21.8 points, down from 33.7 points*). However, price pressure is also easing somewhat for consumer-related service providers (26.9 points, down from 27.5 points*).
In the manufacturing sector, price expectations rose to 11.0 points, up from 6.9 points* in January. Consumer goods manufacturers in particular want to raise their prices more frequently (20.8 points, up from 16.0 points*). The same applies to manufacturers of capital goods and intermediate goods (18.0 and 4.8 points respectively, up from 17.5 points* and 1.8 points*).
In the retail sector, price expectations rose to 33.2 points, up from 30.5 points* in January. This was mainly due to trade in food and beverage (46.6 points, up from 39.6 points*), while price plans in the rest of the retail sector remained unchanged at 32.9 points.
The smallest price increases are expected in the construction industry: The indicator rose slightly to 1.0 points, after 0.8 points* in January.
The points for the ifo price expectations indicate the percentage of companies that intend to increase prices on balance. The balance is obtained by subtracting the percentage of companies that want to lower their prices from the percentage of those that want to raise their prices. If all the companies surveyed intended to increase their prices, the balance would be +100 points. If they all wanted to lower their prices, it would be −100. The balance was seasonally adjusted. The ifo Institute does not ask about the amount of the planned price change.
