Colin Cowherd duped by fake Luka Dončić rumor

Image

Awful Announcing

Colin Cowherd is back from vacation, but apparently, he didn’t have enough time to fact-check a Luka Dončić rumor before the show.

Last week, the satirical social media account NBA Centel posted, “Breaking: The Mavericks organization has announced they will ban fans from wearing Luka Doncic jerseys as a way to move forward from him.” A post that garnered over 22 million impressions.

Considering the backlash after Dallas sent Dončić to the Los Angeles Lakers in a trade centered around Anthony Davis, many immediately believed the post. However, those who believed the post failed to consider the source, Cowherd among them.

“Tomorrow, Lakers play Dallas,” Cowherd told Rachel Nichols during Monday’s edition of The Herd. “I saw a story where they won’t let Luka jerseys in the building in Dallas.”

Maybe Cowherd saw it from NBA Centel, maybe he saw it from another aggregator, or maybe someone just casually told him about the report. But wherever Cowherd saw it, he didn’t see it from the Mavericks because it’s not true. Add Cowherd to the very long list of sports media personalities to be duped by satire accounts such as NBA Centel or Ballsack Sports.

Cowherd has made his share of mistakes on-air throughout his long career, but you would expect his antenna to go up over the idea of the Mavericks attempting to police Luka jerseys out of their building. What would they do when an eight-year-old who was gifted a Dončić jersey two months ago during the holidays enters the arena?

You could see Nichols’ smile fade as Cowherd began to share the fake report, although she stopped short of correcting the FS1 and Fox Sports Radio host. At least Cowherd and his production staff didn’t build an entire segment around the fake news. But still, getting duped by a satirical social media account is never a good look.

They must know something about me that I don’t.”

“Who are you specifically talking to when you say negroes?”

“We do believe as it grows in popularity, that there is room for more leagues, including a professional league.”

“They thought we were gonna sail off into the sunset. Never come back.”

18 of 21 games will be on Wednesday evenings.

NBA Centel dissapears from X as Elon Musk faces outrage and Stephen A. Smith bids farewell

Popular X parody account ‘NBACentel’ went out of commission on Wednesday with reports claiming it’s on a “temporary restriction.” The page currently reads, “Posts aren’t loading right now, try again” if clicked on.

ESPN personality Stephen A. Smith tweeted “RIP Centel” as many users quickly blamed X’s owner Elon Musk . “@elonmusk, put your money where your mouth is and restore “Free Speech” to X @TheNBACentel #FreeCentel #centel,” one person noted.

NBCental launched as an offshoot of the popular basketball news account NBACentral (@thedunkcentral) and has since gained over 350,000 views tweeting NBA tidbits just believable enough to trick actual fans, players, and members of the media.

“Sometimes I wake up and look at @TheNBACentel comments just to truly see how many dummies come online thinking that they have high IQ. Good morning,” chronically online Phoenix Suns star Kevin Durant tweeted of the account in October.

NBA insider Brandon ‘Scoop’ Robinson indicated the ban is not permanent. “NBA Centel’s account is not deactivated, I’m told. Per a source with direct knowledge: ‘It’s a temporary restriction,’ he tweeted on Wednesday afternoon.

Others on X clamored for the account to return immediately. “Centel got packed I WILL CRY myself to sleep unless you reinstate them @elonmusk,” one wrote.

“In that case, @elonmusk should have been suspended/closed as well, they both spread misinformation. Free Centel,” another wrote, acknowledging recent misinformation spread by the current head of the DOGE department.. One basketball fan simply posted a flag hanging at half-mast.

Collin Cowherd, host of “The Herd” on FS1, got ‘centel’d’ this week when he fell for a fake headline from the account regarding new Los Angeles Lakers star Luka Doncic.

“Breaking: The Mavericks organization has announced they will ban fans from wearing Luka Doncic jerseys as a way to move forward from him,” the account tweeted on Feb. 21, garnering over 33 million impressions.

“Tomorrow, [the] Lakers play Dallas,” Cowherd told guest Rachel Nichols. “I saw a story where they won’t let Luka jerseys in the building in Dallas.”

The account also will post fake Instagram comments from one celebrity to another. One featured Kim Kardashian writing “I want to learn how to speak Slovenian” under a Luka Doncic post, with the Slovenian-native replaying “@kimkardashian No, please don’t.” The tweet gained over 50 million impressions and tricked a hoard of gossip news outlets.
