The opening of the 2025 Concacaf Champions Cup has been challenging for Major League Soccer teams, as the tournament kicks off before the regular season begins. This was evident for Los Angeles FC, who suffered a 2-1 defeat against Colorado Rapids last Tuesday night at DSG Park, in a first-round first-leg match played in near-subzero temperatures. The Black & Gold had little time to recover, as four days later they faced Minnesota United in their league opener at BMO Stadium. Under the guidance of coach Steve Cherundolo, the team secured a victory thanks to a goal from Jeremy Ebobisse, earning their first three points of the year and building confidence ahead of the decisive match against the Rapids on February 25, set to take place in Los Angeles, California. “Yes, I believe this group, and certainly our coaching staff, have adapted to this since last season. What is a bit unusual is starting such an important tournament before our domestic league kicks off,” said Cherundolo on Monday, prior to the return leg of the first round against Colorado in the Concacaf Champions Cup 2025. “This poses challenges for preseason preparation but also in terms of getting players up to speed. It’s impossible to prepare the players for knockout stages and matches in just five weeks of preseason. Some games are still needed to be at 100% fitness,” Cherundolo continued. “That is somewhat unfortunate for MLS teams, but these are the circumstances we accept and deal with. That said, we’ve been at home this past weekend and will play at home tomorrow, and in the next game as well. So, as the tournament continues, not having to travel can be an advantage for us,” he added. Los Angeles Football Club has been a prominent team in the Concacaf Champions Cup in recent years, reaching the finals in 2020 and 2023. This year, they aim to overcome the stigma of final defeats and claim their first international trophy in their young history. However, to advance in the tournament, they must deliver a perfect performance against the Rapids to overturn the 2-1 deficit suffered last week.
