Recap: Denver Nuggets can’t complete comeback and lose 110-103 to Boston Celtics

Image

The Denver Nuggets closed out their road trip by playing their third game in four days that also happened to be an 11AM mountain time tip and against the defending champion Boston Celtics. The beginning of the game certainly looked like one stacked against the Nuggets favor with Jaylen Brown getting whatever he wanted and Boston building a big lead. The Nuggets fought back in the second half behind Jamal Murray and Nikola Jokic and got within a bucket in the final minute of the game but couldn’t seal the deal. Ultimately they fall 110-103 to the Celtics.

The teams traded baskets to start the game and Denver looked like a road team that was asked to wake up early. Jokic also looked like he was bothered by some sort of lower body injury and was laboring up and down the court. It didn’t stop him from scoring though and the Nuggets stayed within a basket or two as the quarter progressed. Both teams went cold about midway through the first. The Celtics went on a mini-run to get up seven and Michael Malone called timeout. That didn’t stop the Nuggets from continuing to play sluggish and sloppy so Boston’s lead creeped up to double digits. Outside of Jokic there wasn’t any offense for Denver which kept them down by about a dozen. At the end of the first quarter the score was 32-20 Boston.

The Nuggets opened the second with their bench group who were hunting threes and not making them. They looked disinterested at times while the Boston lead grew. The Celtics did not struggle to hit their outside shots and when Nikola checked back in the Nuggets trailed by fifteen. Denver continued to look like a team that forgot they had an early game and couldn’t close the gap on Boston. Their game was sloppy and Christian Braun was the only Nugget other than Nikola doing anything. They finally got some momentum towards the end of the quarter and went on an 8-0 run the bring themselves within eleven. At the end of the half the Nuggets trailed 61-48.

Denver was sloppy to start but Jamal Murray finally started to get some points to open the second half to keep the game from going into early blowout territory. That sparked a run that was also assisted with Russell Westbrook hitting some threes and Denver pulled back within eleven. Boston regained control after that and didn’t let the Nuggets get closer. The game stayed in that range when it hit the midway point of the third. Jayson Tatum was starting to find his offense and giving the Nuggets some trouble. With about four minutes to go in the quarter Julian Strawther went down holding his left leg and immediately went back to the locker room, he did not return to the game. Tatum’s offense waned again but that didn’t stop him from taking shots and Denver mounted another rally. They went on a 10-0 run right at the end of the quarter and headed into the fourth trailing 83-77.

The Celtics started the fourth with some renewed energy but after a Nuggets timeout Denver responded and kept it as a close game. It went back and forth, Boston got their crowd back into it and pushed the lead back up to ten before Jokic checked back in the game. Murray continued to get buckets for the Nuggets but he wasn’t getting much help. Luckily Boston went cold and Denver started closing in again. They got it back to four but couldn’t seem to get over that hump. Past the halfway point of the fourth the teams started trading three pointers for a bit with the lead hovering around five. Then both teams went cold with time starting to run out on the Nuggets. They trailed by three with just over a minute to go but sloppiness doomed them. They gave up two offensive rebounds and then turned the ball over on the next possession to let Boston get back up seven. Too little too late for Denver and they ultimately end up losing 110-103.

Our Denver Nuggets former waterboy, Colin Gillespie, is playing end of game minutes and performing well for PHX tonight. Always wanted to see good things happen for him. Too bad it’s in Phoenix

Just hit what’s most likely the game winning 3.

his numbers are exceptional in the few minutes he’s played this season.

Gillespie played well in real game situations for the Nuggets last season. And he was very good in G-league, and college. His biggest setbacks have been injuries, including earlier this season.

Val makes the Avs a contender. Hope he can stay sober for selfish fan reasons (and, I suppose for human rooting interest reasons too).

Trying to remember a team as miserable as the current Suns

Go Pels

I deleted my comment as it was too political.

But I swear a female just said to Trump “let’s do bong hits.” as he walked out of Congress.

Would be cooler if they did

Log’s got us covered with his on-topic basketball post below

True. How could anyone possibly know what I was referring to.

We are so, well and truly, fucked.

Man I’m glad we didn’t trade for Bogdan.

He’s playing nice so far tonight but he’s been even worse as a clipper than a hawk so far. averaging 10ppg on 39/28 fg% over 9 games

He’s a very streaky shooter, though solid in everything else. Maybe playing with Jokić would stabilize him and provide an extra motivation, of the kind he benefits from when playing for Serbian NT. When Bogi is on he’s a definite weapon.

He is a streaky shooter, decent on D and excellent ball handler for his position.
His career numbers are much better, he will come around. He is having an excellent game so far vs the Suns and I believe he would have been great in the Nuggets uniform

I beg to disagree with the label “streaky shooter.” Throughout his entire career (Partizan, Euro Leagues, NT, ATL), the guy has been considered an elite scorer from every position, plus he is a very good ball handler and playmaker. Physical defense bothers him, just like it bothers MPJ, and for the same reason, he is not a good interior defender—those are his only shortcomings.

Does anyone know what the record is for the worst W-L record by a team to make the playoffs? I ask because whoever gets the 10 seed in the East is probably going to get in with a record around 33-49.

Fun question. I was thinking about this the other day. How many teams in Hx had losing records entering the playoffs ? Be difficult to include different eras though I guess

Kind of a tricky question, because pretty much every team in the league made the playoffs every year for the first 25ish years of the league. Technically it’s the 1952-53 Bullets with a 16-54 record. Post-merger, it’s the 85-86 Bulls at 30-52.

Well they could definitely challenge that post-merger mark. The Bulls, who are the current 10 seed in East, lost again tonight, and are on pace to finish with 32-50 record.

Don’t be surprised if the Raptors end up with that 10 seed. Out of the main contenders for that slot (Chi, Bkn, Phi, Tor), they are the only one that seems interested in winning games

We don’t call it the Leastern conference for nothing.

The NBA should think about getting rid of conferences and just make the postseason the Top 16 (or 20, if need to keep play-in) teams. Have #1 play #16, #2 vs #15, etc Getting rid of conferences could also help the unbalanced schedule. For example, why does DEN have to play OKC 4 times when BOS or CLE only had to play the twice? Or why do the Eastern Conf teams get to play WAS 3 or 4 times, when the Western Conf teams only get to play them once… Read more »

Only counterargument I can see is the logistical difficulty of having a bunch more cross country flights.

Warriors ending up 5 or even 4 would be a plot twist. HOU and MEM not looking interested in staying there

NBA is happy. The Lakers and Warriors are trending towards top seeds.

Grizz are 3-7 in their last 10. Woof.

Still a big gap that the Warriors would need to make up in not that many games.

Part of the reason I think it could happen is Grizz just announced JJJ has a grade 2 ankle sprain which has avg 3 week absence and they’ve got a tough remaining schedule.

Good point. Could get interesting

sounds like a win streak

How are they going to replace all 5.8 rebounds?

why is chicago handing out an ass whoopin?

One hour later…

Vlatko our savior

VLATKO!!!

Air Vlatko?

He tore his ACL in the very same play, friendly against Greece…

this rash of ankle injuries is clearly because of red rocks workouts!

Well done!

Should have stuck to the blue rocks workouts

Lakers calling Austin Reaves’ calf soreness a strain now. Even if minor prob out a couple weeks.

Other west injury news: Jaren Jackson out likely ~3 weeks.

Probably got the injury by throwing his legs out to get a foul call.

If there is one thing worse than Superstar grifters getting calls, it is players like Reaves being treated like 90’s Jordan when it comes to foul calls.

To think they could be even more out of touch..

with any luck, they are gonna have to increase the price far more than that to make up for all the canceled season tickets.

Yeah, gotta imagine the season ticket cancelations is well over 8% (I know that’s not really how it works, but more or less)

Maybe they are wildly misunderstanding where they fall on the supply/demand curve… but the ownership directive to alienate fans theory is looking more plausible.

If the owner seems to be willfully tanking interest in a team, would the league step in and force them to sell? Didn’t they kind of do that or use their influence in the case of that former Suns owner because of his misconduct?

Yeah, the board of governors voted that Sarver had to sell the team after an investigation was conducted about sexual/workplace harassment. Surely not something that would happen based on rumors.

Vancouver Grizzlies owner at the time, one Michael Heisley, intentionally and openly inflated operational losses in order to move the team to Memphis. David Stern was verbally committed to keeping the team in Vancouver, but did nothing to prevent or slow down Heisley’s plan.

Pickett time! No knock on Julian but Pickett has looked much better in his role than Julian has in his.

Agreed. May be a blessing in disguise. We’re gonna truly find out who Pickett is as a player these next 4+ weeks

Injuries have definitely helped reveal the roster this season.

That’s a fair statement only if our memory doesn’t last longer than the last three games. There was a long period of time when Pickett looked like the worst player in the league. There were times when Strawther looked anywhere between promising and excellent, combined generously with the games where he looked completely lost. Those two are players that are still in limbo, still trying to figure out who they might be in the NBA. It is okay to compare them, but we’re nowhere close to the clear winner.

One thing is for sure, JP has definitely improved and adjusted to the NBA game. He was absolutely terrible coming out of college, the game was way too fast for him. G-League & Andre Miller foto the win! Just need some regular solid minutes now

I’d be extremely surprised (and overjoyed!) if Pickett’s adjustment period is completed. Normally it takes much longer than this, and it is nowhere linear.

He’s been really good by the numbers and eye test

Oh, I imagine he has a long way to go but he actually seems playable. Sure wish he was 6’5

Strawther is a great kid and he’s learning a lot this season for his development. But Straw is our most negative rotation player, metrics wise.

Watson is about to return. Russ really needs to play better. Pickett is playing with confidence when he gets in.

strawther is bad, but contrarily, he does all the things that he was brought in to do, and does them adequately. the 3’s are there and at a high enough percentage. he has a floater and ball handling skills we didn’t have any reason to believe would be at this level. his problems are primarily off ball defense and they snowball. he misses a rotation. he’s behind the play. he reaches. he fouls. i don’t think this is outta line with what we should expect for a 2nd year player… Read more »

I agree his development is a work in progress. I like Strawther and rooting for his success. But while he’s hurt, it’s an opportunity for others.

Ha, you just described half the Nuggets team playing team defense😬

Unfortunately we’ve seen Malone have to be led by his nose through injury at times. Maybe this will get JP up to speed even more and then when straw there comes back, we might actually have a little more playable depth

Kyrie ACL is the nail in the Mavs coffin. Literally, they lost their top 5 players to injury: Lively, AD, Gafford, PJ, and Kyrie.

If all those players were healthy they would be a formidable playoff team. But without Kyrie, it looks bleak. Roster will have some changes next season.

If everyone but Kyrie comes back this season, and they might make the play-in, unlikely at this point.

Buzzard’s luck in Dallas.

Cowards luck in LA.

The more things are shaping out in the West, the more it’s looking like the #2 seed will be a huge advantage over the #3 seed. Sitting in the #3 spot right now, the Nuggets first round matchup would be a against a Warriors team that looks like the real deal with Butler. I’m not saying they’re a shoe in for the 6 seed, cuz there’s a lot of season left, but they’re 4 games behind the #5 Rockets and it’s hard for me to see any of the teams… Read more »

I kinda think Minnesota might be 6. There are 4 teams with 28/29 Ls and MIN has second-easiest remaining schedule in the league. Most difficult:

It’s possible. Like I said, a lot of season left. ANT gets a 1 game suspension for every other tech he gets the rest of the season btw…

Also, what is this graphic you posted? haha

Most realistic best-case scenario is probably us taking care of business to get 2 seed and HOU climbing back to 3 while Lakers slide a bit with tough schedule (which includes two games with both DEN and HOU)

that’d be ideal for sure

https://brians.wsu.edu/2016/05/31/shoe-in/

I remember they told me this guy was better than Mal man

It happens. Maxey has been OK, and more than OK, for the 76rs. Their problem is elsewhere.

He’s a good player for sure

Likely the only really good and tradable asset they have at the moment. They should probably think about trading him for as many picks as possible and start trusting a new “Process”.

Maxey is injured right now. He either has a badly sprained or broken finger on his shooting hand. He’s trying to play through it.

He also has to carry the offense pretty much by himself with Embiid out for the season and Paul George missing every third game or so.

What a sabotage by the Mavs with this Kyrie injury they are off the board.
It feels like Nico wanted to self impose the harm like doing a tariff because he thought it was helping the team in the long run but made it worse.

OKC has an easier path to the WCF unless they face the Lakers in the second round

It’s been a month now and I still can’t comprehend the Luka trade. I’m not normally a conspiracy guy, but there’s literally no other explanation for why a professional organization makes this trade.. It sucks that Kyrie tore his ACL last night, but it’s not like it’s completely unexpected that that guy would miss a large chunk of games for one reason or another…AD is AD. A great player who hits the floor 10 times a game and has been injury prone his whole career. But personnel aside, the Mavs… Read more »

It is either a massive conspiracy or just simply a very bad GM.

Newest NBA metric?

https://www.espn.com/nba/story/_/id/44093220/introducing-net-points-latest-nba-metric-amazing-early-findings

Essentially what Rasmussen used to do with his TPM posts here years ago. Sort of a quantified “eye test.” I’d wanna see a more in depth breakdown behind how they’re assigning credit or blame for the various actions.

This. A critique I had of Patrick’s TPM was that at best he caught zeroth and first order effects and often missed what the defensive scheme was asking of the players

Maybe I’m not up to date with how sophisticated the best tracking data is, but I have a hard time thinking this would really be that much better in those respects.

Depends upon how they’re doing it.

If it’s computerized, no chance in hell.

If they’ve got a couple hundred people watching every game – possible.

No chance in hell it is then.

I mean. Pro Football Focus does it with ~600 people. Numbers suggest you’d need about 2-3x as many people to do the NBA (based on # of players x number of teams x number of games x plays/possessions per game). I feel in someways the NBA would be simpler due to only keeping track of 10 at a time instead of 22

Based on how the article is written, sure sounds like it’s just pushing PBP data through some algorithm. Like I said, maybe it’s way more sophisticated than I’m giving it credit for, maybe there’s some machine learning going on to diagnose schemes and what the players are supposed to be doing, or some other more intricate approach I’m not thinking of that you’d need to account for those things. Seems like it’d be way over the top and messy/impossible, but I’m no expert.

Nothing new about it. It says Jokic is 1st, waaay ahead of SGA, but that doesn’t mean people shouldn’t vote SGA for the MVP. BTW, I don’t give a squat about the MVP award, and all similar awards (this includes ASG, NBA 1st team, 2nd, all-defense, NBA player of the month, week or, the afternoon). The only reason I mention it is that it is just sooo funny how people have to contort their argument just to avoid saying the obvious. But, I guess, not admitting the obvious “drives the… Read more »

It’s a pretty dramatic departure in approach from the EPMs, DARKOs, LEBRONs, etc. of the world. Why do you say nothing new about it? Just because the results look similar?

The “nothing new” is more a comment on the way people look at these things. If it confirms their opinion, fantastic, hey, people, look at this, and if it does not, then, hmm, well, but it is not perfect, one has to look at things not just through some arbitrary measure, …

If you have something to say, please do, I am not in the second grade.

Just a strange rant to make and opportunity chosen to make it.

Nah, not even close to a rant, just a small, fairly insignificant remark. I keep my rants off the internet : )

Im ok with The Lakers becoming competitive again. It was getting boring beating them repeatedly. Nothing would give me more pleasure than winning a 6 or 7 game series. But Lakers fans seem to think they are a shoe in for the finals and will sweep every team. LOL

This. It’s no fun (okay. Less fun) to root against bad teams.

Everyone hates the Yankees and Dodgers.

No one even thinks of the Rox.

I don’t know, I take great pleasure in kicking the Suns and 76ers while they’re down.

Yeah, if I had it my way, the lakers would never win another basketball game, ever. 38-44 this season, and 0-82 every season thereafter. I’d cackle with glee after every loss.

I align with BUT isn’t it also fun to destroy expectations the way we were counted out against the Lakers during our Championship run?

I did really really love seeing our guys sweep them in the WCF in 2023, but for me, that pretty much scratched that itch entirely.

I’m with you. I would be happy pouring salt into their wounds.

Overtime: I am headed to Dallas tomorrow for the steel convention. And see an 89 year old aunt.

Have a blast at the convention! I wish I could go. Would love to see pics, but maybe I’m the only Stiff who feels that way, in which case you could email me at parkhillnative@gmail.com.

And I hope it’s good seeing your aunt.

I’ve sent you an email.

I’d go with an occasional win, just to introduce a glimmer of hope, and then resuming the beatdowns.

I hate losing playoff series to teams like the Lakers or Minnesota more than I enjoy winning. Is that strange?

That is not strange. At least not to me.

Describes how my daughter runs track. It’s not that she wants to win, she just doesn’t want to lose to someone that slow.

I shoo away people who write shoe in.

First time correcting the same thing twice in one thread?

I’m not sure, I did it in two different ways this time.

How can you not be shoe?

Who woulda thought that trading for Luka would make them better and a tougher matchup for Denver? It was funny how some here were minimizing that move. So far they showed Denver will have a hard time stopping them and they can matchup with Denver with their all forward lineup. What the Nuggets just experienced in working LA for 15 games straight is not the norm. It will now be competitive bball with either team able to win at any time vs the other.

If they were officiated the same way as everyone else. If them being good didn’t effect the way we were officiated, sure. If they had legitimately had the best offer for Luka, it a wide open market where all teams were allowed to bid, sure.

But none of that is the case.

Not trying to make this into a political discussion at all but the fact of the matter is that the tariffs are in place now.

My question is will this cause further strain on NBA viewership and attendance…let alone all sports? Things will undoubtedly become more expensive and it seems that expenses on streaming services may be cut in a lot of households.

I would think it may make ticket prices lower as fewer fans are interested in paying a premium for seats. Nuggets have already been working hard to get sell outs. Watching on TV may go up. Streaming and watching a game at home is much cheaper than any outside the house from of entertainment. Papa Murphy’s and a game or a movie at home on Friday night used to be a staple cheap weekend for my wife and I. People will cut out the easy optional stuff first – expensive… Read more »

Yup Medicare and Medicaid will be getting cut too. This is going to be a tough time for everyone unless you are Musk. Sadly politics are like talking about the weather you can’t do much about it but hope it passes

Those of us who are not billionaires are fucked.

Well fuck.

Speaking of weather….

Brandan– Gruv is having a 3 4k for 40$ sale. Snagged Bikeriders, Dune II and Furiosa. But its a very solid batch of films in the sale. Almost got The Excorist and the Fugative. Owned a bunch of the others. I also just ordered the 4k Arrow of Silence of the Lambs (considered easily the best version but only available via import), the gorgeous VS version of Smiley Face (will make a great watch with my pothead roommate) and the Umbrella 4k of Possession. Orbitz is great for imports btw.… Read more »

I’ve been meaning to put in an order for that Posession disk for a while (that and Suspiria). I’ve had good experience with Diabolik for imports as well but they don’t have the shipping deal. Was eyeing the Gruv sale last night. I’ve ended up with quite a few of those from previous sales but still pretty easy to come up with 3 (was thinking Exorcist/Departed/Rebel Without a Cause).

Yeah they are my fav sales. Got Departed during their last one. I will grab Exorcist eventually but really want to rewatch Dune Pt and Furiosa… and wanted to support Nichols / reward the fact that WB put an indie film on 4k.

i’m assuming “the fugative” is porn

The basketball gods seem to be punishing the Mavericks for that Luka trade

Sucks for Kyrie. He was having a great season,

Sucks for Kyrie, but like ad, the injury was not at all unexpected. His being unable to play is a big part of why Dallas was able to trade for him. Hopefully he recovers quickly but he’ll be 34 next season – he may never be the same player again

But it’s ok because he fits their timeline!

Wow torn Acl for Kyrie. What an awful year

Damn

ACL for Kyrie holy shit. They’re fucked for next year too.

So unbelievably fucked up.

How are they fucked for next season? Everyone who is currently injured on the Mavs should be healthy next year. Depending on the severity of the ACL injury, Kyrie may even be ready to go by training camp.

This season is toast. But the Mavs should be fine for next season.

ACL recovery takes a year. Murray took about 16 months, and he was younger than Kyrie. So yeah, fucked.

Exactly. Very similar timing to Jamal. Unlikely he’ll come back next year. Gets tricky with his contract situation too. Nico was banking on a very short title window and likely best shot already out the window.

Pretty sure Nico’s bank is in LA.

Kendrick Perkins claimed on tv today that he tore his ACL and was back in 6 months. And that was 20+ yrs ago.

Now, he could be lying. But ACL surgery is also pretty advanced these days. So unless it involves other ligaments/damage, it should be a fairly straightforward surgery.

It’s too soon to know how long they expect Kyrie will be out.

Thats a major outlier

Perkins also barely moved compared to Kyrie.

Would anyone have noticed the difference from Perk being injured or not?

For all we know could still be healing

Yeah, even if he plays next year he won’t be 100%. May not ever be 100% again.

*Assuming good health and the right head space for all

AD handled being Batman real well in NO. Kyrie has also not put the cape on in the past.

Does Nico make it through next season? My money is on “no.”

Unless the rumors of this being an owner-directed move to alienate the fanbase and move the team are true, I’d think he’s gone before any moved are made this offseason.

Even if it was an owner directed move, I’m giving even odds he’s gone this offseason.

Yeah, they got much more backlash than expected. Owners need a scapegoat even if it was their idea

The old “get rid of him!” -> “that went poorly!” -> “let us be heroes again now that we got rid of the bad guy!” move

B. Bickerstaff can probably relate.

7ish months would be a FAST turnaround for an ACL tear.

IIRC, you took the position that the Mavs won this trade and would compete for a title this year? Gotta be real about how disastrous this has been.

7 months is pretty much impossible for basketball

More like a year to return and 6 more months to regain form

My kid has two good friends who tore ACLs in recent years. One tried to come back after nine months; she had a second surgery a few weeks ago because of complications from too much too soon. The other blew it in September 2022, and they took their time and didn’t clear her to come back until fall 2023. She had a good last senior season that winter. It’s convinced me that you ALWAYS err on the side of caution rehabbing ACLs.

Irving is almost certainly out for 2025-26. ACL recovery is 12 months, and that’s when he’ll be fully cleared to START full workouts. He may be ready by the 2026 playoffs, but it won’t be with the Mavericks.

ACL is LONG recovery. He ain’t coming back until the 26-27 season.

Optimistically, he could be back playing mid to late 25-26.

This is the same time that Jamal went down. He didn’t come back until 2 years later.

Jamal was on the long end of the spectrum. Some guys have come back in 10-11ish months.

I did say that’s the optimistic outlook.

Agreed.

But he will take time to round into form so him playing in games will be about injecting hope to the fanbase or really believing he is ready.

A lot of guys talk about how tough it is to regain confidence in your body after something like that. I think if he’s medically good to go, you try to give him reps in 25-26 so there’s less of that process in 26-27.

Yeah Jamal was medically cleared to come back at the end of that season around 12 months from the surgery but still didn’t feel comfortable coming back

Took Jamal about 2 months into 22-23 to not be awful too. And not just his normal slow start level.

Still chuckling remembering Jokic saying “He’s gonna suck for about 20 games.”

lmao Perk

I should have blacked out the name and made people guess who he said was actually the best

Lakers coming for Denver’s shiny things. It is so annoying to see them ahead of Denver in the standings. ESPN been penciling them in at the 2 spot since the trade…and just like that they’re in the 2 spot.

They’ve got a really tough schedule coming up (2nd most difficult remaining per PR) so we’ll see if they can keep it

The 2 games against the Nugs are going to be intense.

Wish those Thunder games were coming sooner rather than closer to the end of the season.

They’re this weekend

I’m talking about the Thunder-Lakers games. April 6/7. Maybe the Thunder will keep playing everyone in their lineup all the way to the end

This is where I’m at. I’m not counting on the Lakers losing, I’d prefer Denver step up and win a couple of these big games and earn this #2 spot.

I refuse to even click play on that morons video

Fuck that guy.

It may not be LeBron (for my money I think it’s SGA and not even close) but Joker is definitely not the MVP this year and shouldn’t even be in the running. He has WAAYYYYY too many turnovers and at the MOST CRITICAL times of games. And on top of all that he’s starting to act a little entitled with his demeanor and on the bench. Most of the talking heads on tv don’t watch the full Nuggets games just highlights. Joker’s not the MVP this year and actually he’s… Read more »

This might be worse than Perk’s take if that is possible

He won’t win MVP this year and I am totally fine with that…

BUT…LOL you lost everyone with this “Joker is not the MVP of the team right now”

Your credibility:

#Anyone but Jokic

lol this bum.

Perkins is always eager to be the face of stupid

There’s apparently good money in it.

LeBron is amazing for his age but isn’t the best player on his team, much less the entire league

Nico harrison really incurred the wrath of the basketball gods with that trade. Worst season of any sports fandom in recent memory I think.

And now we all have to suffer because of it

Mavs fans were obnoxious with the MVP stuff last year, but I feel so bad for them. The biggest surprise gut punch maybe in league history, and them repeatedly kicked when down.

Also, Mavs favs are die hard and, like us, have often chosen being an NBA junkie over NFL in a state where football is church

Yeah the kyrie injury has to be the last straw

lol, it isn’t even close to the disaster that is the Sixers’ current season. The Sixers paid Embiid & Maxey max extensions & then brought in PG, a THIRD MAX contract. They had legit championship hopes. Instead, the team has won a whopping 21 games, and Embiid, Maxey & PG only played 15 games together. Embiid is done for the season, while PG may be as well. He’s had 4 different injuries this year (knee, ankle, pinky, groin). Last night Maxey injured his back, and though he avoided serious injury,… Read more »

And they traded their first round pick this year, top 6? protected. And probably can’t lose enough to keep it.

Right now they have the 6th worst record. Which gives them a decent chance of holding onto the pick. Everyone in PHI is rooting for them to tank. The fans were really mad that they beat GS the other night.

I doubt that DAL fans are at the point where they are going to root for their team to tank so they can get a draft pick,

Mavs fans were in the finals just 8 months ago. Now they lost everyone and have to watch luka win mvps and titles for next 10 years. They had in in their grasp and threw it all away. Embiid can retire in 2 years and they can move on easily. There’s no contest with whatever dallas is going through right now.

When was peak Philly 76ers w/Embiid? Pick a second round exit. I’ll just go with the most recent one 20-21. The Mavs trading Luka at this point is like the 76ers trading Embiid after the 20-21 season. Nico pretty clearly lost the plot of being a NBA GM and will probably go work for the Lakers once he is fired(Unless Luka blocks it 😉 ).

Philly chose to put all their eggs in a couple fragile, very likely to be crushed baskets. Stars needed to align in a big way for those “championship hopes” to come to fruition.

Dallas suffered the biggest rug pull in league history and took a team that was poised to compete for years and shat on it for no reason.

If we’re talking about organizational dysfunction, maybe they’re similar. In terms of the impact on fans, Dallas is so much worse.

Bingo. Philly in fairly normal late arc for team with aging, injury-prone superstar… Mavs arguably have had worst season of all time for a fanbase out of nowhere.

The difference is that Sixers FO tried their best to improve the team in the offseason – and was universally saluted for signing PG. Embiid was pretty clearly hurt during Olympics, so some of the blame for this season’s disaster has to go his way. Mavs FO however directly sabotaged their own team, and I’m pretty sure that they knew exactly what they’re doing (Making the Lakers Great Again). We’ll learn more about that particular transaction in the years to come. So, on one side you have best intentions turning… Read more »

Meanwhile, Kyrie is hurt, sprained knee, I would say gone for the season. The way things are going, my gut feeling is that Mavs are not going to the finals this year.

Lakers now 2nd in the West. After our B2B against OKC (both on the road) on Sunday and Monday, we could fall a couple games behind them.

We play LA 2 more times and need to win both to get the tiebreaker, but I like our chances.

@The Lakers’ ascendance has made 2025 even more wonderful for me.@

Finally addressing the reason we suck on more than one days rest…practice

Yee-haw. ATL just beat MEM on a buzzer beater!

Hawks did us a solid!

https://bsky.app/profile/ohnohedidnt24.bsky.social/post/3ljjjjj67gk2q

That’s weird. Why didn’t it embed?

Anyways, this is ATL’s gamewinner.

Straight up larceny by Dyson

I know the Nuggets are fighting them for playoff position, but it must really suck to be a Grizz fan right now. They were so close a couple of years ago, and seem to be slowly falling.

Holy Shit, what an Atlanta Hawks finish!

Down 5 with less than 2 min left–way to come back, Hawks, and do us a big favor!

lol bane sold and jenkins didn’t call timeout. what an epic fail

Dyson is absolutely filthy at times on defense

Hopefully he plays for the National team for many years to come.

If we flame out early in the playoffs again, I think we’re the favorites to land KD in the offseason and it won’t cost a lot. Lucky we didn’t re-sign KCP if not we are stuck with the second apron limitations.

Watching a bit of Okc-Houston. So much length.

If Malone is willing to experiment with his favorite 4-guard bench lineup. I want to see the 4 Big bench. Russ-Watson-Zeke-AG-DJ, with CB, Mike or Murray stagger.

Big ball is better than small ball. Watson obviously out, but when he comes back don’t DNP Zeke or DJ, keep using all the bigs.

Dj is close to being unplayable in lineups. I don’t think Malone has any choice but to go small in the playoffs. Replace DJ with Mike and we may have something. Might as well replace russ with pickett too

DJ saved the bench with his elite rebounding. That’s why the Nuggets record is excellent with DJ. He’s 4th in the league in rebounds per 36.

AG and Zeke get less than half rebounds per minute than DJ. But when they play the 4 next to DJ they are far better overall on both sides on the ball.

I’ve watched enough of DJ against decent teams to see he’s not playable against them. He grab rebounds but that’s about it. I don’t like AG at the 5 this year but other options suck too

I think like RW should be micromanaged, DAJ needs the same sort of treatment. I just don’t know if Malone is very good at it

I don’t think Malone will micromanage vets like he does for the rooks.

It depends on the matchup. Against big but slower centers, he is good. He sets great picks, gobbles up rebounds, and lets Zeke play the 4.

He won’t play against a speedy, five on the perimeter team.

Definitely the matchup matters… Strategic micromanagement, come on Malone!

Big bench lineups tend to beat small lineups. We see it daily across the league. Even with a center like DJ who is still pretty athletic at age 36.

Other than OKC(and they can go 5 out anytime), I just don’t see a matchup for him in the west. Maybe memphis but Santi plays center for them too. Mavs too possibly but I think they might fall off soon

Good conversation #2

Bill and Russillo are always a must listen. Huge Jokic guys, have always been high on Denver.

They said we are by ourselves in tier two behind OKC, Boston and the Cavs.

They call our spacing alarming, say we have 0 margin for error due to not having enough shooting or trustworthy bench guys. They also talk about how advanced stats say MPJ isn’t the same player as earlier in his career which is interesting. Gotta think thats related to how hot and cold he has been.

Agreed with a lot of this. Bill’s point about they probably are playing at a higher level playing week after week in the playoffs was interesting and is why I kinda like our schedule to finish the year. My big picture take is similar- can definitely still win it but margins are thin. There aren’t individual teams that like completely terrify me but I think the overall quality of the west is really good and every series could be tough.

I think our lack of shooting is going to be a huge problem, but that we could still have a miracle run if everyone is healthy because Jamal is clicking. I also don’t trust Malone to pull the right strings with the rotation (Zeke, Westbrook especially), but hope I am wrong.

Getting my basement set up installed this week provided the increasingly unreliable FedEx actually shows up. If you have a choice use ups. Everyone in our area is having delivery problems with FedEx. I had to drive to Dillon recently because they couldn’t manage to deliver to my house. Anyway, Stiffs sports bar Grand lake edition will be open soon for anyone who wants to watch a game. Not as convenient as pleas sports bar, but the view is better

exciting stuff! Hopefully all the hassle will be worth it in the end.

Are there steamy & sultry pictures of said Stiff(lers) Sports Bar ?

Are you high up in the mountains? FedEx is reliable down here in the city.

Good luck with the basement set up, and enjoy the clean mountain air.

Hell yeah. Really hope he can hit the ground running. Very significant piece to our ceiling imo.

Absolutely. Though I think this version of the team is still a year away

Nuggets vs Celtics Prediction & Same Game Parlay picks: Nuggets continue to roll at +350 odds

Image

NBA

We were just one Paul George point short of cashing on our 3rd Same Game Parlay in 4 attempts last night, I’m hoping to make amends with today’s Nuggets vs Celtics game. My Same Game Parlay is priced at +350 odds, you can see it below. Be sure to visit our NBA Picks page for predictions on Sunday’s slate, but now let’s get into my Nuggets vs Celtics SGP bet!

Sunday’s clash has the potential to be one of the better regular season games this season as the Nuggets bring their impressive road record of 5 wins in 6 games to TD Garden. There’s no point in wasting words on how good Jokic has been during this run, but the form of Jamal Murray is something that should please the Nuggets fans as he is finally looking like the player he was during the Nuggets championship run back in 2023. Over his last 9 games he’s averaging 25.8 points on 54% shooting from the field and 56.7% from three, all season highs. One of the major reasons why the Nuggets just ended the Pistons long win streak was Murray’s 31 point night.

Meanwhile, Boston has dropped two games in a row against the Pistons and Cavaliers. Health has played a huge part in both of those losses, for Sunday’s game Jrue Holiday, Kristaps Porzingis and Jaylen Brown are all listed as game-time decisions which could have a negative impact on the result here. If there’s one thing we could hold against the Celtics here it’s their ATS record in home games which stands at just 11-18 this season. This team relies heavily on the three-point shot and on certain nights when it’s not going they are in trouble. Denver has done relatively well in that department defensively, they’ll be amped up to get revenge for that loss earlier in the year at Ball Arena when Jokic didn’t play. With the Joker back the Nuggets are a force and I have them pulling off the upset here.

We’ve seen the Joker fill the box score for a number of years now, but what he’s been doing lately is impressive even for his standards. Over his past 10 games he’s averaging 27.2 points, 12.1 rebounds and 11.2 assists per game on 61% shooting from the field. It’s no wonder he has now overtaken SGA for the number one spot in the MVP race according to NBA.com. The Nuggets have flourished lately with 11 wins in 13 games, of course their leader Jokic deserves a lot of credit for that run. He’s cleared this line 8 times in 12 games, including his last 6 in a row. Boston has struggled guarding opposing big men this season, they just aren’t equipped to handle a versatile player like Jokic down low. The last 3 meetings are proof of that with the 3-time MVP averaging 32 points, 12 rebounds and 10.7 assists per game, clearing this line in 2 of those games. Expect another stat sheet stuffing night from the Joker as he carries the Nuggets to an upset win on the road.

Derrick White has been a model citizen this entire season, rarely missing games and consistently getting to his season averages. With the uncertainty surrounding Holiday, Porzingis and Brown here, White might have to do additional work on offense and I am more than happy to include him in my Same Game Parlay bet. He capped of February by averaging 17.3 points per game, clearing this line 6 games in a row. In his last home game vs the Nuggets he finished with 24 points on 50% shooting, including 5 threes made. Having great role players is the main reason why the Celtics have been so good for so long. With the focus of most opponents being on how to contain Tatum and Brown, the likes of White, Porzingis, Pritchard and others can go a bit under the radar and that could very well be the case in Sunday’s game.
